Sorry about the cellphone-cam quality, but what's more boner-inducing than a trailer full of motards after Friday's track day? Not much.

We were in the carpark of Taupo Hospital, waiting for our mate to be discharged after breaking his wrist when someone in the first session cut him off in turn one and sent him tumbling into the grass. Good times...

man that one of mark burkhart is cooool. i downloaded the supermoto of X games 13 and it has mark burkhart and jeff ward as the favourites in the final. Burkhart drops his bike (and takes out 3 other riders) on the first corner. He gets up and finds himself in dead last so he rides like a fucking madman and has a monumental crash on a big dropoff. All before he'd completed 1 lap! the man has heart (and large testes)

Lol, yip, did change the pipe. Lost 8,6kg's by doing it too.

And no, I didn't try those mounds. Actually, the thought never even crossed my mind... I did do a bit of sliding around on the gas there though...

Looking forward to seeing that going. I think it will rip up Teretonga where power is needed but might struggle at Wyndham where torque is whats needed. Great idea though! I wonder what the most powerful motor it is possible to shoe-horn into a dirt bike frame? Got to be under 700cc though.

Hey everyone, 1st post here so hope it works...

The MZ had a 660 Yamaha 5 valve engine - a lazy, slow revving bike (compared to a drz400e) but it was great for longer trips.

Weren't you commenting how unbig and unclever wheelies were in your last breath..??!

Nope - my comments have only ever been about appropriate time and place. I've sponsored suitable stunting venues in the past. (and would do so again)

I think my most recent profundity on the topic was that it's frustrating that you can't even do wheelies at the track days I've reported on lately.

And yes - it is a nifty photo thanks.

its faster than the wr , handles better hence ohlins, drives better out corners due to sprocket set up , dosen't wheelie as good , its a typical bmw , dose everthing good but its got no holigan factor in it, realy long swing arm,

The conversion had been done when I bought this but it appears a couple of spacers on the front rim with a bracket to offset caliper in right position. The rear fits without spacers and has the standard 240mm disc so no bracket required there.

Ain't that the truth !

Lighting up the rear in top (not long had motard set up) think maybe rear contact area not good enough, running
140 but only 80 - 90 mm of tyre actually making contact, tread 180 across. 31 psi cold , low profile battlax

Same sound as with E07 when got towards the center band, think clutch in good nick, 10k bike. Just revs out all of a sudden - feels ok - straight line stuff.

What ya reckon crasher - think be more traction than clutch ?

The high tyre pressure will be making it want to light up, but as grunty as XR650's are...they won't be spinning top gear up.

22-24 psi cold would be bettera I think mate.

I put 40 in night before and after 100 k's 44 psi.

Didn't feel that comfortable yesterday on the greasy mountain twisty stuff but what does.

Time before that ran at 34 and was decent amount of heat in rear after 50 km.

Still some heat this time - maybe tyre meant to have bit of heat.

Prob like most things with performance - better it is more it cost :D less pressure.

The bike is not set up to do high revs, Ive tried to use what it has standard, they are one of the most reliable motors ever. 25-30 hrs on a piston and ring, wiscoe $500 with gaskets half an hour and you can do it in the frame. I do 100hrs easily trail riding on my other without problems. It has been ported and the hit has been taken out and replaced with a linear power delivery. Its pretty smooth for a 2t, and it corners pretty dam well. Still is the big bore 2t just a bit more civilised.
Ive concentrated on gearing to keep it in the fat, start getting a big piston to go faster and maintaince and reliabilty goes though the roof. The HRC gears were built for the 85-88 cr500's. They were found to be no good for MX, they are awesome for motard or beach racing. 5th is taller, 3rd and 4th are alot taller, which enables you to stay in the fat longer, on a 2t that makes a big difference. They are very rare now days over 25 years old.Took me 2 years to find. The slipper was fitted to save the gears and crank. Still trailing springs, looks as though ill need the lightest spring as they don't have much back pressure.
The bike runs well but I'm an average rider and a lard ass at that, I still get off her with a bid smile. Hope to see youz at a track day and whatever else I can ride in . Cheerz.

Here's a blast from the past. Motard before it was even called such. Name the guy sitting next to me on the dummy grid for the next F1 race. Masterton street races...circa 1991.282208282209

There was a guy in the late 70s that use to run a YZ250 or 400 ? motard style thing on Ruapuna "Bret Hawker"

That name doesn't ring a bell. But Racing moto-x bikes with slicks was the go for ages before they named it anything. It was a was a cheap way to go road racing, and you could be very competitive until big HP came to play...Mark Boyle, Ian Dawson, Dennis Newton...they all gave me inspiration to have a crack on my dirtbike. Got me hooked.

They sure as fuck do. I've done plenty of road racing and beach racing against one that Craig Wilkie used to pilot. Was def quicker in a straight line that my KX500's.

Yep pretty light at the mo.

Going to try and find some more power out of her. Stage 3 cam, no airbox, high compression piston and a custom exhaust to see how close I can get to the 60bhp bracket.

dont go down that path

no airbox will kill the airflow into the carb

stage 3 cam ( high lift and of what duration , will / can lead to crap low rpm response and a high comp piston has is own list of consideration ,flame front instability etc

look at where you ACTUALLY use the bike and design from there , you might find its a torque monster u are looking for ......

The bike will be a dedicated race bike. I have consulted the north islands top motard racers Scotty Moir and Duncan Hart plus talked to 4 engine builders and these are the specs I have settled on. None of the top guys are running airboxes. I have 2 different shaped velocity stacks to dyno test (apparant gain 2-3hp). The bike is basically the same specs as Scotty's except for the stage 3 cam and from what I understand as long as I use the right valve springs it should be ok (according to Glenn at Keown Honda whos porting the engine). After lots of talking with others the high comp piston is the way to go after others have had a few engine fails, which is also what I am rebuilding from, in particular the wiseco seems to be the best. High rpm performance is what I need as you spend very little time at the bottom of the range unless I am doing kart track training days in which case I use an mx gearing.

hey guys, how's it?

This is my 525sx (mix of SX and EXC) that i've used as my daily commuter, MX and supermoto for quite some time now. Its been fantastic and this bike does it all for me.

As a daily driver it is a bit of a handful at low speeds with the light flywheel and brutal power but nevertheless it is good on fuel for the A to B. It has been very reliable. I change the oil about every 2500K with 1 liter of Shell Rotella diesel oil. It doesn't burn any either.

As a motorcrosser, needless to say, it is a ruthless machine that keeps you on top of your fitness. Tiring.

As a supermoto it is okay, faster than CRF450 but I think it could go with a little front end geometry adjustment to increase trail. I use the behringer aerotec 6 piston brake- feel and consistency is second to none. Really like these brakes.

It has about 600 hours now, no rebuild or anything. Much of that time spent bouncing off the rev limter I must add. Inspected the valves a few times but find they don't ever need adjustment. It has a full Akrapovic exhaust which is rather loud when the machine is opened up. I run 10w oil in the forks for a bit heavier damping and run the oil level slightly higher for a more progressive feel on the brakes. .46 fork springs and 90-250 shock.

I am always very keen for the twisties with other riders so just give me a message if you would like to meet up.

See below. Very dirty, fast and fun!

Nice 525!

I've ridden a load of big bore single tards (450,525,550SXV, 560 and 650FSE) on the road and thought my 660SMC would be the bees knees but I'd really like to go back to MX style bikes. The 660 feels sluggish compared to say a 525.

Edit: SXV is a twin.

Bruce Anstey. He and I used to lock horns all the time. He's great to race against. A hard man but a very clean racer.

arrrgg :D bugger it, shoulda guessed that. :)
you possibly raced against a mate of mine (motard) in the late 1990's. Had a yzf450 and was doing ok until a nasty highside at taupo ended his racing. 6 months off work and left with 20% movement in his wrist. Refocused his life on family and had to give up riding a road bike again as the weight on his wrist causes a shit load of pain. Dedicated motard rider now :D
Bit off topic but do you have any more racing motard pics ? kewl shots btw :D

Haven't done a lot of so called Motard. Started road racing as a yoof on KX500's on street circuits. Then got right into it on KR1's. Gave it away. Got back into it a lil on an RS250 GP bike. Then raced 883 Harleys. Then once I'd given that away just did the odd street circuit on my RMZ. So full circle as it were. Cheers. Sorry to hear about ya mates wrist. Never nice. I very nearly lost my right foot at Wanganui. Have just now (some 8 years later) had a triple fusion on that ankle. Some more for ya...may've already posted em too sorry. Too lazy to check.
