I'm getting rid of my ute and getting a nice family wagon :argh:, so now means i need to invest in a trailer if I ever want to ride again. Want to get a normal trailer so i can use it for other stuff as well, I'm thinking a 7x4 will be big enough. Any ideas though on how I can put something on the front of it to slot the front wheel into, but then something easy enough to remove to take a load of rubbish to the tip ? Any brilliant ideas ??

I have seen some with a wheel rack, made of channel that bolts onto the front of the trailer, then it can be removed when you don't need it, others are a frame that sits in the trailer with the wheel slotting into it.

get a front stand like this, it can be bolted down and it makes loading a piece of piss, just push the bike into it and it will stay there by itself until you tie it down.

7x5 is a better size as it will then take up to 3 bikes, Pinto Trailers in auckland make a selection and all have ramps and wheel guides available. Have a look at their website and get some ideas.

A good trailor is in the sliced bread category IMHO. Many uses, you can lend it to friends, always handy.
7x4 is just right, nothing wrong with 7x5 but it's a bit wide for most uses and won't fit into narrow spots, especially when you want to park it out of the way at home. Still, your call. Get one with a plywood base because its easy to replace and less noisy to tow.
If you can get a galvanised one thats better. My trailor is well-made but the paint is coming off after 12 years and rust developing in places.

I did the same, needed a trailer for carting the odd bit of rubbish /builder mix etc, mine was a bit smaller but did the job, at a pinch could get to sports bikes on or two dirt bikes no worries, added a few other things, some pics in the link for you to get some ideas. see post # 19

If you PM nonferrous and he is not too busy, he might be able to help you with channel but you gotta buy the stuff in 5meter lengths. http://www.nalco.co.nz/userDocuments/Geometric%20Shapes%20SP.pdf

my trailer is 8x5 and it fits 4 bikes pretty well.
i have got my spare wheel on the side of trailer behind the wheel so the A arm draw bar is free to stick to stick my box to hold gear.
i got heaps of tie down point put on it and they are full loops instead of the half hooks have alot of trailers have so my tie downs can not slip off at all.
i have got a small row of white led lights which are at the front head board underthe top steel bar so i can see what i'm doing at night while tieing bikes on and that sort of jazz. i have it off at the moment but must put it back on as it is bloody useful light.
if you go 5 ft wide you have to have lights on the mudguards which can be a pain some times as i've busted mine but an led block set up would solve that issue .
it is a primo trailer and now 3 of my mates got trailers made exactly the same ( should charge my local engineer a comission)
i dont have wheel channels or nothing i just put front wheel facing into the front corner and have bike diagonal if it just one bike but thats hardly ever and if 2 bikes have back wheels tied to side.
3 bikes have middle bike facing backwards and 4 bikes have 2 in middle facing backwards.

This is what you need!- these things are the ducks nuts! I had one 10 years or so ago. they hold the bike and you dont need tiedowns. I will be buying three of em soon.
You can bolt them down to captive nuts in the floor so you can take em out quickly

i have a 8x4 multi purpose trailer that i built over ten years ago. I have two u channels that can bolt on to the tail gate so that it acts as a ramp, no f'ing around with planks etc, drop the tailgate and done. The bikes front wheel locates into a piece of flatbar with two pieces of round rod which are bolted to the front tie down rail, simple, one either side. There is a removable tie down right next where the rear wheel is situated when the bike is in place, which is removable if you want to carry furniture etc. It is importanrt to lock the rear wheel down also.
So the bike is held down by two tie downs on angle at the front, and the one tie down at the rear, safe as.
I also have a plywood box on the front to carry fuel, tools and boots etc.
Hope this helps.

By the way, i wanted an 8x4 to carry full sheets of plywood, so i made the internal measurements 2440x1220.
It has 1 1/2 ton springs which make the trailer bouncy with no load, but perfect once an mx bike is on.

I "think" that mine is a 6 x 3 and that fits one bike only, but is easy to store.

Ive got a 7x4 with tie downs for africa welded around the sides.--works well
Just one lil point--by going for a 8x 4 floor width it means you only need 1 sheet of ply to do the floor

Yeah that's an important point - the trailor needs to be 20mm wider than a standard sheet of ply/gib whatever so you can carry that sort of thing. 1215 - 1220mm is ideal.
