I am looking to replace the exhaust system on my 1989 Yamaha FJ1200. it is a 4-into-2 but i want a 4-into-1. would I be better off getting a 4-2-1 or a straight 4-1. I am told the standard exhaust is quite restrictive so what sort of power gains can i expect by doing this? I am planning to get the carbs adjusted to suit.

There are quite a few FJ1200 web sites on the net... check a few out...
Depending on the system you install, WITH re-jetting, probably another 5-10 japanese ponys. (I could be wrong...often am)
Fuel consumption may increase too...

access one stateside, I bought a new Jardine system for my XS1100 over winter, cost US$450 inclusive of freight (airmail priority) taking only 10 days to arrive. 1/3 the price of anything I could buy here in NZ.
Its is a 4-1 like you are looking for and the sound is quite mellow, not loud at all. I took it for a WOF last week, past without a worry, WOF man was very happy with sound. Check my profile for what one looks like.
You will have to get your bike retuned to suit a 4-1, as FJrider sugested.
As far as ecconomy is concerned, I have gone from a Harris to the jardine and have had an increase in my MPG ratio. But that I guess depends on how you ride it and how good it is tuned as well. But you will get a HP increase, not vast amounts but it will be noticable.
I agree with FJrider re checking out on line forums that cater for your bike, you should get lots of good tips from there

meh.. just a pipe and hotter spark plugs is all..:innocent:

go with a fresh built FJ1100 -spec 4-1 ..1/8" smaller diameter than the 1200. really builds torque.. talk to custom chambers and get a can built.. see my profile pics.. YMMV

may pay to ask testing station too..on what they allow changes..as many seem to be knocking back mod's to exhausts if not ...rated via manufactor...however if your model unbolts at the down pipes why not get a set made up via a muffler shop..may cost a couple of hundred by surely would be less than what a set of order and fit would cost...
