View Full Version : Who wants rep points? (name that song)

Mr Skid
2nd February 2005, 00:21
Reputation points go to the first person who can successfully identify the band that penned the pearler of a lyric that is my signature.

First hint: They are (were) a NZ group.

Responses please on the back of a stamped self addressed envelope..

One of Kiri Te Kenawa`s lesser known songs?

Dodgyiti
2nd February 2005, 07:40
Nah,
Pap is too young for any Johnny Devlin, unless his mamma used to sing him to sleep with it.
Maybe that's why I know all the words to 'L.A. International Airport'??
It's where all the big jet engines go, ya know
No, I think it is a classic line from the kiwi icons- ' 8 Foot Sativa', and if you can understand all the words from their two albums, then call me wrong !

Mr Skid
2nd February 2005, 07:47
Good attempts everyone! Moko gets a rep point for imagination!

Sounds like you need more help so..

Second Hint: The song was on an album recorded at the York Street Studios in 1996.

Third Hint: Graeme Humphreys aka Graeme Hill (of Sports Cafe infamy) was a guest organist on a track on the album

Keep them comming...

NZ band, my man. Somehow, Jordan Luck springs to mind.

Mr Skid
2nd February 2005, 08:28
Ok, let me say who it isn't:

The Bloodhound Gang
The Swingers
Johnny Devlin and the Devils
Bic Runga
Exponents
Kiri Te Kanawa
8 Foot Sativa
Jean Paul Sartre Experience
Little Feat

Dodgyiti is the warmest with JPSE...

The Fast Crew feat. Dr Seuss

I've got a rocket in my pocket,
put the plug into the socket my dear.
But you gotta watch the Wocket,
Cos the Wocket won't stop it
until he makes his intentions clear.

Cos I got,
and I rock.
......

Seriously tho, is it Shihad or Zed?

Mr Skid
2nd February 2005, 09:27
Not Harry Truman
Not Fast Crew
Not Shihad
Not Zed

Right, here's another one:

Nth Hint: They were on the same recording label as JPSE...

It's Little Feat - Slingshot gets the points ... Surely.
Title is "Time loves a hero."

But for do I get bonus points for knowing that Burns and Smithers had that quote (or most of it) in the Simpsons?

Something like:
Smithers! I've got a rocket in my pocket!
You don't have to tell me, sir!

ok I have no idea.....

BUT....

Was it the group that is in the advert on TV where they fly Air New Zealand and sing on the rooftop in New York as they are trying to get a recording contract.....? :wavey:

And as to the name of that group....!!!!!! :wavey:

But who ever wins the prize of REP points.... good luck.... :wavey:

Well it's quite possibly a case of synchronicity (or more likely plagiarism) by the NZ band..

Points to Yokai for including a Simpsons quote in the thread, and a consalation point to Slingshot for his awnser.

One more hint (and someone *must* get it with this)

Nth+1 Hint: The bands last drummer went on to star in a popular NZ soap..

Damn it! If only I'd read that thread earlier, I could've got that one! But well we're on the topic I might add my two cents of trivia:
Manufactured bands, the works of marketers around the world have served to provide a number of chat topping hits - none more prominient than the 1971 song "I'd like to teach the world to sing" was rewritten after the hands down success of the advertisment featuring kids from all round the world singing "I'd like to buy the world a coke," a song written over night in the week before filming was scheduled to begin.

A golden orb of burning light
Its parabolic arc complete
Descended
And with a flash as bright
And fearful as the firey sun itself
Exploded.

Any worthy volunteers prepared to truthfully report how much rep the holder of five dark green squares and one light green square can bestow? No whores. Please.

+12 I believe Mr Hitcher.

Though my memory of my previous points tally is somewhat foggy.

If you care to hit me again, I'll be able to provide a definitive report of what influence your praise/condemnation can have upon mere mortals such as I.

p.s. I'd prefer to report on the effect of your praise, rather than your wrath if it's all the same.

In the winter time when it's cold why don't I orgy nize a little music quiz then?

I could send out a CD with some associated questions the week before and then we could have a little party and argue about the results all night boring our partners (who are not allowed to drink 'cos they are driving us home) dead from boredom while we decide who IS the best bass player in the country / rock / bluse crossover folk scene from 1987 to 1989...

Wadda yas think?
