If you want an accurate reflection of the potential make up of Parliament from KB's perspective then both votes are important. This is one of the things about recent polls that I think is a little misleading. The Constituent vote may carry the minority number of seats in Parliament vs the list, but don't forget that a minority party getting one Constituent seat will almost invariably mean there are at least 2 from that party in Parliament.
I think your statement about the constituent being "different" is a little flippant.
I don't think most NZers can accept that they are even allowed to cast a party vote that differs from the party their potential constituent candidate comes from.

it is completely different because your case is a perfect example of people not choosing the same for both thier votes, which would throw off what we are trying to find out now wouldn't it...
if it is party vote only at least we get an untainted idea of who will be running the country.
i think this is a better way, you have an issue run your own poll.

I don't really feel like voting, though I feel as though I should. None of the parties that could get into government are worth spitting at, and those that do seem worth voting for can't even obtain 0.1% of the country's votes (Democrats for Social Credit got 0.05% in the 2005 election) since they don't clearly publicise themselves whether that's the media's fault or their own. Voting is both too important to fuck up, and too meaningless to worry about.
I'm not sure if voting for a good party is going to leave me feeling warm and fuzzy knowing I did the right thing or thinking I've just wasted my vote.
So I'm either voting for Bill and Ben or ALCP.

Which is why the black and white "National Versus Labour" has become far more evident this year. Democracy only works when the people are educated. But it's easier to watch TV and hear on the news "Labour/National did something baaaad. What does the opposition leader have to say?" rather than learning about smaller parties. And who has the knowledge of who else is running and the time to learn about them anyway? After this election we shouldn't have any more need for coalitions and MMP since the 2 big right leaning parties will be see-sawing in and out of majority control of this country. Just like America. Or a better analogy, it's just like Holdens and Fords. THEY'RE BOTH THE SAME FUCKING THING. Does it really matter who wins?

All this poll explains is what a load of bikers think. We're not an accurate sample of the whole country, of which the majority hate bikers or simply don't see them. Most bikers have a bit of money behind them as our addiction does require money to burn so they're more likely to be biased toward National or Act, as the poll confirms, as they'd rather not loose this money and therefore loose their bikes. Or they're simply sick of Labour and are voting for the second default position. Though Act, at the time of this post, have fewer poll votes than Labour, Act has a smaller following in the country as a whole. In the great scheme of things, Labour is polling very low considering the amount of people that have taken this poll.
It's an interesting poll, but it doesn't suggest that National are going to win by a landslide this election. Of course, that is going to happen due to reasons I hinted at before.
Despite all I know, I still don't think I'm educated enough in politics to actually vote. I still don't read up enough on local policies as I pay too much attention to American politics. I spend far too much time living my own life. I don't think the public should be in charge of their own fate, they're too ignorant to make an informed choice. Course, that's why we vote for politicians, people that make the choices for us. And to have people well educated in who those politicians are and in charge of deciding who'd decide best for us is just silly and complicated and we'll end up with more people to hate.

Bullshit. A non-vote shows the amount of people who are not impressed with any of those two-faced lying pricks. A good number of non voters would send a clear message that real change is needed... not just to and throwing all the time between the same pack of idiots.
You don't have to vote like a brainless sheep.
If Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were running for government... would you mindlessly vote for one of them? Only to have whoever got in say "well, 75% of the country voted for me" Fuck off. Voting for these pricks only encourages them.
If people take the non-vote option, then it sends a clear message that there is opportunity for something different. This is why everybody needs to be on the electoral roll. They can then see how many didn't vote. It is an equally important reflection.
The... "if you don't vote you can't complain" is the bullshit lie they want you to swallow to help keep the disillusion of "democracy".

No - Id vote for the other guy.
Remember that there are many millions of people who DID vote for Bush and think he is a very good president (cannot understand that myself - but there you go)
Saying that a non-vote is a statement isn't a great argument - because while your non-vote IS, for many others who dont vote - Its NOT.
There has to be some party that you believe has a better understanding on what you want and can do better for the country?

If you don't vote it shows that you can't be bothered in the democratic process & you don't give a rats arse who is actually running the show.
Therefore you have no right to bitch when a party you don't like does get into power.
If you wish to do a protest vote there are plenty of half baked shitforbrains minor parties to place your vote with.

Failing all these options then you can vote for none by simply striking out all the candidates on the polling form & registering your protest that way.

Well certainly can't argue that almost anyone would be better than Dubya....McCain was probably the way I would have lent until he hooked up with Palin, from what I've read she's even less experienced than Obama and just as dangerous, though that's all conjecture and I'll freely admit I haven't been following it that closely.
Palin may not be as bad as some sections of the media seem to be making out, but it certainly has put a big question mark in the minds of many voters over there along with myself.

I tend to agree, and if push came to shove and I was actually voting in the US election I think I'd probably still vote for McCain/Palin. i don't have a problem at all with having an African-American president, in fact like a female president I believe it's inevitable. I just do not believe that Obama is the right person for the job. Certainly makes it interesting from our standpoint.

Actually my experience has been quite the opposite, back when Bush was elected I couldn't believe how many people were talking about how the election was rigged/illegal (insert Michael Moore script here :)) and the problems that he would cause - though the majority of these people were ones I deal with on the West Coast, as you move further to the east (and closer to DC) it did become more as you describe. It probably changes within the circles you move in too I guess, the majority of these folks were motorcycle industry or racing people FWIW.

It was a system very similar to MMP. There were party lists. Hitler's party only got 18% of the votes but under that system he got control.
They fine tuned it after the war and came up with MMP to try to avoid something like that happening again.

That's well - within the bounds of what you can do with 35mm forks (!) on a 274kg bike with a hinge in the middle. It is amazing what modern tyres and suspension technology can do to those old bikes.
The zook is in 'as traded' condition at present so the suspension will be getting looked at in due course, but for now it does seem to lack a bit of damping control......

I don't think that there is any party that is " right" for the country, you just have to base your vote on the party that has policies that you agree with, unfortunity MMP allows too many paricites to suck the taxpayers dry. The only time MPs do anything is
1. To make themselves look good
2. Make someone else look bad
3. When there is an election comming up.
The beehive is like high school, except they have lots of our money to waste on their whims.:weep:

Ain't that the truth.
I remember once watching the documentary on a day in the life with the then prime minister Jenny Shipley.
The morning was spent in a big long meeting with many people around this big table. It all looked very important and official. But were they making important decisions about running this country with all those highly qualified graduates and experts in the room..???
No. They spent most of the morning flicking through magazines looking for any dirt they could use against opposition members.
Politics. What a fucking waste of time and money.

Back on the subject. I now know 4 people who want to vote National but they are on the Maori role and National doesnt have any candidates. They have all filled in the form to enrol in the general role and all been told they can't until the electoral reform act 2011 (or something along those lines) comes in. So now they are stuck with a party vote only. Something stinks here!!!!!!!!

28th October 2008, 17:34
Actually I like where your statements are heading. I say give the vote only to Businessmen / landowners aged 40 years or more. And get rid of MMP down the toilet where it belongs.
