I don't know if this has been posted here or not, but thought to be better safe than sorry for the poor buggars that end up looking for petrol at Arthurs Pass.
Travel safe!!

No petrol Kumara as it is closed as well.

They charge like a wounded bull... don't fill up there anyway. They usually have the pump locked, and you have to go and find someone to unlock it/fill your tank. If they're busy... a wait for that too...
Its a touristy passing through spot, they will only have a small tank, fuel companys don't like them anymore. The tank truck drivers prefer full compartment fills. Easier to do the paperwork. May not even be the shops fault they're out...

Dont be too quick to judge. Not their fault. It was ordered.
He actually says nice things about bikers.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4739547a11.html

Arthurs Pass Store and Cafe manager Grant Molloy said he was told by Caltex there was no 91 octane fuel available to fill his order. He ordered the petrol a week ago and it was due to be delivered on Thursday, but never arrived.

He said many motorcyclists refuelled at Arthurs Pass.

However, they tended to be organised people and would make other plans if they knew there was no petrol at Arthurs Pass.

Just wait till all the gas stations near the closed ones run out as well :devil2:

By Monday, there will be a great big black hole of no gas

edit: :killingme reading that article, who the hell is getting 250-300km on 10L in a modern bike? I get around 220km on 15L :killingme

Avg. Litres/100km (Overall): 7.22
Best Litres/100km: 5.25
Worst Litres/100km: 8.60

In 10 months, 702.77 litres and 9,728.00 km of owning my CBR600RR5. So on average 220 from 15 seems bang on.

I was going to say you were a heavy handed bugger... until I saw the worst on the zx10 was 8.83L/100km (trackday), average tho was 6.75L/100km over 12,000km.

New bike has only been owned for 3 weeks, but the above post is about what I am getting, but probably running rich.

.

Piss off. We are flat out bridging 91 into the canterbury area from other depo's this week. Ship delayed into chch. Small Odd ball sites like A/P are at the bottom of the list, Keeping the main stations operating for the long weekend is more important.

The Stuff story keeps saying they ran out of 91 octane. So that's no big deal if they have 95..but I doubt it would make news unless it was a completely dry station?

I was supposed to be doing the Sth Island lop- Greymouth races - long weekend bike thingy but pulled out, mainly due to the crap weather forecast. Hope my mates get over the Arthurs Pass OK if they venture that way. Those 1098s with 15 litre tanks wont make Grey to Springfield. Even the thrifty 675 would be pushing it..ha, I typed that before I realise the pun.

They only have ONE pump... it is NOT a gas station...just a shop that sells petrol... if they have any...
The racing is on Sunday, and they could go via the Lewis... or carry a tin...

Yeah but they have plenty of coal, so all the steam powered bikes will be ok. :woohoo:

The coal "falls off" the coal trains, that go through on most days... and nights...
From the pass to Otira... you only need BRAKES...

Found out while over at the coast, that the Kumara petrol station is closed for good.

So for those of you with smaller tanks and short range between full ups, plan your trips with that in mind.

The weather was perfect!
We left saturday morning just after 10am, drizzling in ChCh. Got to Springfield for a gas top up and the sun was out.
Perfect through the pass, beaut ride!!
Got to Jacksons, started to cloud up, though no rain. Went round through Moana, a few spits but did not rain!
It rained overnight though, to leave us with a near on cloudless day for racing!
Came home yesterday arvo, perfect ride, clear blue sky all the way!
Rather chilly through Porters, a tiny tiny bit of snow near the road, good dusting up on the peaks. Very fresh.
Couldnt have asked for better weather really.
You missed out on a fantastic trip weather wise!
