There was an announcement over the PA system at Phillip Island that the new 2009 Yamaha R1 has the "big bang" firing order.

The M1 went big bang when Rossi went to Yamaha from Honda. Yamaha were reportedly looking at changing the firing order in road bikes but were uncertain as to the long term effect of the extra vibration on reliability. Apparently they've got that sorted. Now all they have to do is make it sound less like a tractor?

For those unsure of what the big bang thing is about, it gives an inline four firing impulses which assist maintain traction of the rear tyre. V twins and V fours come standard with a sort of built in big bang which might go some way to explain why most of the bikes on the Moto GP grid are V fours.

I wonder if they'll make the engine run backwards like Rossi's does too...

You're a bit late with this one - details of the engine etc were covered in this thread: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=81551

Reckon it would be a blast to ride.... :D

It's not quite big bang though, at least in the way the MotoGP bikes are done. It's, erm, medium bang

From memory, someone with more knowledge of these things than I (or at least better at creating that illusion...lol) described it as a 'long bang' in the above thread. :)

And if there's two or more of them together, is it a gang bang?

I'd like to hear a big bang triple in person.
