so go buy a couple of heavy duty turn buckles....weld d-rings to trailer and turnbuckle down the bikes.....

27th October 2008, 17:31
If you have any rope lying around,
1. Put the bike on the trailer and put the side stand down
2. Tie the rope to the left handlebar (the lowest one) and tighten
3. Lean the bike to the right hand side by using your body weight, and get someone to tie the right handlebar to the trailer and tighten rope
4. Put side stand up.
If you have done it right, the forks will be keeping the bike in one place, I myself have used this method many times and have not dropped a bike, or you could make a small frame.:headbang:

laserracer

Turnbuckles are a cool idea ,slightly time consuming to do up, but i have the problem of the outer foot pegs hanging over the trailer sides which makes attaching the turnbuckles rather tricky.

laserracer
27th October 2008, 18:04
Thanks WOLFRIDER ... but whats a side stand..:bleh:thats what ya have legs for.ropes all good but much like tiedowns.. sorta like skunks idea even though its still got tiedowns..but really want to get away from having to tie anything down :niceone:

ever seen the levers they use to chain loads down on trucks. I recon with a bit of steel and rope you could make something similar that would pull tight with one swing of the lever

Have a look around here,

I have seen a foot peg pull down clamp and also another one which clamps to your fork tubes in here a while ago, have a search around.

I looked at the workshop benches at the bikeshop - they have this clamp thing you wheel the bike into, and then roll the clamp shut pinching the front wheel. If you got fancy and motorised the clamp, you could be tied down in about 20 seconds without getting off the bike. If I was building a race trailer I'd do something like that. It would need some simple loop over the rear of the bikes in case you rolled the trailer.

Holy fucking $249.95usd batman!! http://www.srtusa.com/products.htm

Looks like ya hook them in then sit on the bike to compress and lock.

The fork tube clamp was cool too, more designed for enclosed trailers i think. The one i saw was wall mounted.

Verry nice, thanks for the link. I think I've got a few stainless bolts loafing, I'll bodgy a couple up for my trailer. Hope the ole footpegs don't break!

Theres a reason why just about everyone uses tie downs. They are the quickest cheapest easiest and most secure way to transport your bike. Why do you need another way to do it?

isnt securing your bike from side to side movement via the wheel going to be pretty bad for buckling wheels / stretching spokes? as well as the side to side pressure on fork legs and axle mount thru thingees?

seems to me like tie downs with good anchor points on the trailer BEHIND THE AXLE, but IN FRONT OF THE BARS of the bike are best

laserracer
27th October 2008, 21:56
Yep you may be right BOOOOM but just exploring the options... and yes im sure some of those options you mention will put added strain on parts of the bike
but just seeing if theres an alternative without breaking the bank... and at the moment it looks like tiedowns are winning.... although that footpeg clamp may be alright

my concerns are if you looked at locking down bike instruction the gys wearin saftey googles.
bit of box section with a noce course thread 12/14 mm in the top with plate fitted attached to trailer. long bolt with nice thick washer and a speeder handle ratchet would do the same thing. cost ohhh $50 and time to make it

laserracer
28th October 2008, 07:05
oooh that is scary why would you wear eye protection to load a bike,...maybe hes scared the bike might flick up and hit him in the eye:eek: or some kinda new fashion statement:msn-wink:

Aerofast camlock bike tiedowns-very user friendly - load bike and go within 3mins.Unload even faster.
$48-00inc gst.
I looked at doing my own clamps but these things beat everything Ive seen.Anything mechanical is gonna fill up with shit eventually. You can chuck tiedowns in the washing machine with your gears.
And you dont need safety goggles!
If you want a more secure (lockable) tiedown check www.offroadimports.co.nz

Why look for an alternative to Tiedowns? Keeping the shockies fully compressed with tiedowns can't be good for the seals over long trips.

Why not run a length of steel box section across the trailer at the right height so it sits under the cradle with a couple of U-bolts that loop around the cradle and locks the frame down onto the bar. A couple of big cotter pins to slip through the Ubolts instead of nuts. Brackets on the sides of the trailer to slide the length of cross section through.

And I'm from the school of thought that prevention is better than cure.
A fork brace made from a lump of wood gives peace of mind.

laserracer
28th October 2008, 10:09
yep we always use fork brace.. nice peice of 4x2 with foam on the ends and never had leaky seals.... yet.. shit i just know that now ive said it.... tomorrow the bloody fork seals are gonna start leaking.. i should learn to keep my big mouth shut:shutup::bye:

what about an upright either side of trailer, with a cross bar at handlebar height.
then just tie the handlebars to crossmember, secure back wheel down.

I'm going to get one of these Ventura front wheel stands. They should work on a trailer.

http://www.ventura-bike.com/products.aspx?type=BikeStand

Last time I trailered the bike to Taupo using the sidestand and tie-downs it was a pain in the arse. Needed dozens of ties to keep the bike in place.
Also this stand wont be one model bike specific, like some I've seen in shops.

I saw their add in a BRM magazine and rang their Helpline who said they should retail for $219. Why advertise in a magazine and not show the price!

Shit I miss having bikes with centrestands.

laserracer
29th October 2008, 18:52
Sounds good MD, will ya still have to use a couple of tiedowns or will it support the bike by itself ?

MD
29th October 2008, 19:10
Sounds good MD, will ya still have to use a couple of tiedowns or will it support the bike by itself ?

I'm only going by the pictures. But it looks like a few ties would do instead of 2 dozen.

Should make cleaning a bike easier but I can't see how it would help with chain adjustments.

Let me moan some more, it cheers me up. We put a man on the moon 38 years ago but still can't come up with a simple, small, light, out-of-the-way centrestand on sports and dirt bikes. Anyone noticed the optional extra centrestand for the new BMW F800GS !! Ha. it's big enough and ugly enough to double as a lion cage at the zoo. In fact that might be where they got it from?

laserracer
29th October 2008, 22:18

pretty simple... bolts through left hand foot peg , has been crash tested over speed bumps that bottomed out the falcoon xr6 and had the trailer leap about a half meter in the air:shit:...it stayed put thank god :wari:just got to weld a couple of loops to upright for a padlock. And yes my welding looks like bird shit... im one of those blind welders ...weld by braille

I would have gone for two my self per bike. puts a lota load on one peg and givin that the one peg attachment could allow that peg to fold back or bike to fold over it.
Never know might find slighty damaged 426 lying on side of road near Hamilton have to keep eyes open when im down next.

You need to buy a VW transporter best thing i ever did when i was a courier everone gave me shit about it now there all getting them. Carried 10L more fuel but i could run the van for 6 days at work and get around on the weekend apposed to 4 1/2 day for a tank in the hiace before it ran out service was every 15000ks tyres did 30000ks 1st year tyre where only half worn only ever got 30000 per set on the hiace.
As for room probley get four bike in the back Ever tried to put in a sheet of ply wood in the back of your hiace it sit on the wheel archs fit in between on the vw with room to spare.

mmmmm vw van

barty5
19th November 2008, 07:06
i was thinking more like this.
Forgot to mention they are quick to got mine up to 185Ks and it still had plenty of pull left in it there good for closer to 200ks and real solid on the road unlike the old hiace which strugles when loaded to get to 120 which is a pain on the open road.

B0000M
19th November 2008, 07:29
