hey ppl I bought an old 86 rg250 couple of days ago, and now it has started giving a little grief, was going alright when i bought it, bit boggy in the midrange but it had sat for a few months so it will need a good carb clean. In the power band it still had incredible power and sounded totally smooth. It was pretty rattly for about 1000 revs before 7500 and boggy but overall it was running decent enough.
Just before i was cruising down the road at a constant 60 k and it just kinda lost power and sounded gurgly and muffled and would just hold 55 and not accelerate any higher in any gear, had to stop at the lights just near my house and on takeoff it was only just running, a bicycle passed me! i managed to crawl round the corner into the garage.
Now i can start the bike if i use a fair bit of throttle and keep it running but as soon as i release the clutch it will bog out and stall.
I beleive the rectifier was replaced a year ago and the bike hasnt ridden much in that time (got receipt for the rectifier) so i wonder if this is an electrical or fuel problem.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Your problem could be a few things.
One fouled plug if it's a vtwin. If it's running on one cylinder you'll have trouble getting it to rev up. this is the problem that you'll hope it is and the first thing to check. Easy fix, clean or replace the spark plug. I had an RGV250 that fouled plugs regularly... it's a bitch. But an easy fix.
Fuel blockage either in the carbs or fuel line. Check your fuel filter or that there's no kink in the fuel line. Then take the carbs off and strip them being careful not to lose any parts. It's best if you have a workshop manual for this. Clean them out with carby cleaner and stick them back together and back on the bike and hope like hell that it's fixed the problem.
Worn out engine. In which case you need someone who know's how to tinker with two strokes to help you.
Oil failure. Which would wreck your engine. is it injected or premix? If you don't know then chances are this is your problem. Again will have wrecked your engine and you'll need help.

Holed piston

wow thanks for the fast reply
fouled plug quite likely, as i put new ones in because the old ones were sooted from what i assume is running rich.
Its oil injected and has plenty of oil unless somehow the supply has been stopped.
I have been searching high and low for a manual but i cant even find one to buy ... but will see what i can see in the fuel routing system but i dont know if its this as i can rev it pretty high in neutral and it doesnt die or splutter, only as soon as i let the clutch out it loses all power.
Second hand two stroke rg so worn out engine also quite possible, but fingers crossed it isnt. I have 2 new pistons and rings and a full gasket set but most of all I need a 2 stroke enthusiast who enjoys to drink beer and help poor noobs .
I have a few hundreds to invest in this bike as I like its personality and classic style but if its going to cost an arm and a leg i might have to take it out the back and shoot it, possibly myself at the same time :D

Just try the easy(cheap) things first... then go from there...
Fuel or electric's...

Usally means fuel starved or contanminated fuel.
I dont pretent to know much but I would be betting the fuel tap got clogged (or bumped to near the off position.)
Every detail tells a story.

ok thanks ill try those things after work tonight, drain carbs and tank and put some fresh fuel, maybe water was at the bottom.
Also the bike has a battery eliminator but i cant find it to test it !? its not under the seat so does anyone know what it looks like or where it might be hiding?
It does feel like a fuel problem (to a relative noob like myself) so i will try the easy stuff before i start ripping it to pieces.

well i have checked and cleaned carbs, jets, filters and the petcock
checked the voltage and it runs at 14v under minor revs with the headlight on full beam.
both cylinders appear to have compression and spark and are firing.
i can start it and it will idle fine, loading up with fuel and requiring revs intermittently, and will rev in neutral smoothly through the rev range.
But still even if i hold the revs at 5k and feather the clutch ever so gently, it still loses revs sharply and will stall unless i grab the clutch.
Still looking for ideas :D

Not so much a solution for your problems, but here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=10556&highlight=manuals) is the KB manuals library thread.

cheers bud but when i say cant find one anywere doesnt just mean i typed it into google . That post was the FIRST place i looked :P sure theres rgv manuals and rg500 manuals all over the net, but very hard to find on for an RG. I think on e has just gone up on ebay so ill try and win in.
I had even searched every page of rg parts on yahoo japan and ebay hong kong without luck. If anyone can find a pdf copy of the manual ill give em 40 bucks cash!!! ITS GOTTA BE 86 87 model due to the power valves.
Looks like club 250 is stumped on this one i think ill have to take it to the main forum :D

i would go with ixions advice on a holed piston - hes been around 2 strokes for more years than ive been alive.

i asked a motorbike mechanic and he said that it wouldnt idle or rev smoothly through the range in neutral if it had a holed piston and that its most probably the stator causing the issues ???

its running now, but rough through the midrange, fine in the top and bottom
so i dont think holed piston, but instead reed valves??
where are reed vavles anyone?

Not sure of your model but if you can't access the reed valves behind the carbs rubber manifolds then you may have to remove the barrels.

Did you get it sorted? I have still been thinking about this one...... When did you last do your airfilter?
