Hi I'm planning on riding to this area to do these two tracks on Saturday 29/11. I plan on riding from Wellington leaving late afternoon on the Friday 28/11 travelling up through the Whanganui National Park or Turakina Valley.
Accommodation options I'm considering for the Saturday night are the National Park Hotel and or the Owhango Pub.
I've yet to inquire on # of beds available at these two establishments on the Saturday night. I'm looking to determine the level of interest before making inquiries of either one as to whether they can accommodate a group.
I've sent a note to the Convent at Jerusalem to see whether its possible to stay there on the Friday night for those of us coming from the South (or those from the North wanting to meet us on the river road).
Welcome thoughts / expressions of interest. Depending on interest shown I'll contact the pubs to see whether they can accommodate us and post this as a an event in the Calendar.
Cheers Aslan

Hi MarkS and Pampa - great to have your interest hope you're both able to come.
Others watching this thread would be great to have your company. I'm hoping some of the active adventurers from JaffaLand and the Waikato, Taupo, the Naki and HB might link up with those of us coming from South of Taupo.
cheers Aslan - more on accommodation when the numbers become clearer.

Tony W makes a valid point - date clash was unintentional - simply fitting around domestic bliss arrangements - read this is the weekend my wife is visiting her grandchild in Melbourne
So many rides so little time eh?

hey- as mooted at the TTTTT (thanks Young1 et al) I expect that I will be organising another ride along with Mark S and any others in the Southern North Island who care to volunteer in Jan / Feb which will take in the country around Taihape, Hunterville, Ohakune, Raetehi etc - I'd expect the Traverse and Fisher's to be optiions at that time also for those of you coming from the North. LOL MarkS - my wife sees right through my devious attempts to fit in another MC adventure at the expense of some stuff involving us both.
As I've said to you previously - your passion (or it it obsession like mine?) for bikes is prolly well rationalised to your wife on the basis you're doing a lot of it with your lads who are going to have lasting memories of fun with Dad.
Have a good one! Ciao S :done:

hi - I've posted this event in the calendar - as a newbie at this I'm unsure whether it's set up right to enable people to register their intent of being part of this adventure which I envisage going ahead baring cyclones.
In the event of bad weahther there's plenty of gravel to explore in the area.

This applies to 4x4's and is the standard annual restrictions, I'd hate to meet a bloody 4x4 in there anyway, meeting a quad causes diversions into the bushes.
Watch the river flows as they rise quickly with rain and check with DOC at national park about conditions, they are helpful but a bit vaque...
Do not do as I did, get knobblies as it can be muddy this time of year.
I doubt I can come and join you but I'm keeping it in the back of my mind in case i feel an urge for a long days riding.

Thanks Iain - I checked with DOC this morning and as you say the restriction does not apply to bikes - so in that sense 'wer'e good to go!'
Would be good if you do manage to make it. I've yet to purchase and fit some 50/50 oriented tyres.

Is a 50/50 on the back and a 70/30 on the front going to be suitable?
I have a near new Mitas E-09 on the back and a V-Rubber VRM163 on the front.
There's a pic of the VRM here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1586088&postcount=375

I'm trying to get Hugh along on this ride, but don't think I'll have much luck.
The south end of the HBAR went over the same ground as the north end of that Makiro run. Speaking of which, it's about time to have a nosey through the Makiro track again. May be a bit over growen at the moment.
Seriously thinking about getting a bigger bike too. Little 4 hundy's getting a bit small for the long trips.

Hi Eddieb - great that you're planning on coming along for this ride. I share MarkS's thought about your front tyre looks to me a lot like the 80/20 TrailWing fitted to my DR650 as OEM.
On my GS I run TKC80's. In my experience a find that the front washes out real easily on the Papa (Clay) we'll encounter in this area. When I rode Fisher's in March I had the front of my DR350 wash out real quick despite having a TKC80 on the front.

ok - so it's less than a fortnight out from our ride now.
There are 5 registered for the event and TeAroha who has indicated he will link up with us on the Saturday.
I've advised the folks at Jerusalem and Owhango Hotel that we are requiring accommodation for 5 (maybe 8 including Bart, BusaJim and BoGSer).
Jerusalem is confirmed and payment will be $20 each for accommodation on the Friday night. Sleeping bags and breakfast provisions will be necessary Plan is to have a meal in Wanganui early Friday evening before heading up the River Road. It's 1.5 hours from Wanganui to Jerusalem.
I'm keen for us to arrive whilst it is still daylight. I've organised for the locals to show us the location of James K Baxter's (Hemi's) grave for those that are interested.http://www.compassion.org.nz/centres/jerusalem.htm
I'll update the calendar once Owhango Hotel confirm our accommodation. I've requested a cottage that sleeps up to 8. There is other accommodation avaialble if our numbers are suddenly swelled.http://www.owhangohotel.co.nz/Accommodation.php
Remember the objective of this ride is to have fun, challenge ourselves, look out for one another and most importantly return home safely

Great Colin - look forward to seeing you again - having seen you ride before on Tourances in some challenging gravel - I expect you'll be fine. Tis me that's the 'wus' opting for the DR in lieu of the 1150 which I find too heavy for my skill / confidence level.
No offence to DR enthusiasts I might offend by the above remark - I could have saved a lot of dosh had I gone straight to a DR long ago. Like the Speights ad says ..... she's a hard one lad to find the perfect bike.
The big beemer is certainly the way to go for the journey to and from the 42nd.

On the engine sprocket topic (off topic I know)- I plan on going with the circlip approach for the 14T engine sprocket and using the standard plate if and when I revert to the 15T - talk about sitting on the fence eh? :2thumbsup'm

Seriously Stephen I do think you will be satisfied with the 14t for almost all situations( barring doing the Rusty nuts southern cross in March!)....it is a reasonable compromise at both ends of the engines range.
I have done 25000+km with the same 2 circlips in now - they are 100% trouble free!

Have fun.
However, I have a few days off early next week, so might have a poke around the Makiro, Pori, Rimu, Little Manuhara, Towai on Tuesday. That would make one hell of a loop.:2thumbsup

I will have a mate joining us on a KTM 990 ADV. He has never done the traverse so it will be a good effort to get that thing around the track...
At least there are enough hands to work some magic on the tough bits..
Thinking it is going to be dry though which will be good.

Hi Pampa (and others watching) - Does Shell Mana 3.30pm Friday work for those of us living in Wellington?
My plan is to reach Wanganui between 6-6.30, grab a cafe meal and head off up the River Road to Jerusalem reaching our destination before dusk.
I'll update the calendar entry with this departure time.
Colin (that looks like fun) and BoGSer (Gerard) suggest you PM me our intentions about where you intend linking up - cheers S

:crybaby: Put the TKCs on. they looked so big and shiney I thought I needed to dirty them. I may have gotten over enthusiastic with getting them dirty  Wednesday I am taking the trailer out to Whanga to get the wee beasty and bring her home :argh: The dreaded engine stops for a rest fault has reappeared :angry2: I thought I had fixed it (its been twelve months). I will see what I can find with her but unless I can find something I am not excited about taking her too far afield. :argh: Even with many helping hands if she decides to rest in the middle of the Traverse she may get shot through the oil cooler to put her out of her misery.
Let us pray :calm:

Meantime - I'm wrestling with removing the carb on my DR to relocate the Scott Oiler vacuum take off point on to the carb manifold as I plan to fit a larger IMS tank this week - if it all turns to custard I'll be putting the original tank back on or bringing the Bemmer - which for me would be a challenge.

I rode the first km or so of Fishers road yesterday afternoon, the part that is maintained by the local council. It was raining lightly and the track was damp but firm.
Walkers I spoke to who had gone in about 3km said it was mostly firm with a few small mud sections.
Not sure I can make a 3:30 meetup in Welly, I might have to do a straight through run to Jerusalem.
Still working on a replacement front tyre too, there's not enough hours in a week.

Depending on time & weather conditions Whangaehu Valley road could be a consideration for the route back down again.
From SH49 between Ohakune & Wairouru Take the Whangaehu road towards Fields track, at the Fields track intersection keep going straight. Just after the intersection it turns to gravel for about 30kms (I think?) then back to seal for some back block roads.
Or for something more adventurous take Turakina Valley road off SH49 at Tangiwai and down through Rangiwaea and all the junctions there. Thats a lot more gravel though which may be deeper.

I gotta ride home too, so the further south I go, the longer it makes the day.
I will still meet you all at Raetehi or further into the River road depending on time. I guess you will be there about 12 ish? Anyway, we can ride back with you, do the 42 Traverse both ways I hope?...lol
That gets a good perspective of the track, always different the reverse direction for obvious reasones..
Sunday I have a trail ride to do locally if I am not feeling to tired. See, I just got a trailer and can go to these events. My van was stolen and I have to start all over again, kit myself up and to get the trailer, the tow bar etc was cheaper option but it will do.
Needless to say, making a trail ride on Sunday will be a good cross-over from the Traverse on the Saturday.
See you all in a couple of days.....

Looks as though there are just 6 maybe 7 with my mate. That is a good number. We will be taking a bit of a circular route as the Round Taupo ride is on and their route is on the same route I usually take south. Anyway, there is still some options available.
I have put some trail tyres on for the next few months for a bit of a change. Brett has new Scorpion on the front but the rear is about half worn so that will be interesting.
Hada bit of rain last night, so that has cooled things down. 7 riders is plenty for this track and we can carry bikes and push the big ones if it gets a little greasy underfoot. I don't expect much traffic there, most of the hard core bikers (cyclists) will be slogging it out around the 160km route in Taupo...
Have a safe ride and see you tomorrow all.......

Well, the sun is out and it is a great day but I am sore....
Bloody and bruised...
More on that a little later.
I have posted some photos of the ride yesterday and you guys can have a look and comment etc.
I will write a bit more when the rest of the tribe make it back from the ride today.
Got home last night at 10pm, it was a long long but really enjoyable day out there. The weather was stunning! The terrain was great and the falls quite spectacular!
:gob:
I'm jealous...if only my KDX had a numberplate...
Theres a guy in one of your pics looks like Neville the Triumph Sprint owner. ...but it can't be as he does not have an orange KTM.....

Hmm, funny that.
There might have been someone there called Neville.
There might have been someone there who owned a Triumph Sprint
There might have been someone there riding a loaned KTM
But were they all the same person?

A workmate came up with the following info on the names of places we went thorugh Friday night.
Named by the early missionaries:
Atene (Athens)
Koroniti (Corinth)
Ranana (London)
Karatia (Galatea)
Hiruharama (Jerusalem)
http://www.waymarker.co.uk/ml/nz/ni2.html
"The road passed through a number of small communities whose names had been given to them by the early missionaries with a classical bent, and then given Maori spellings and pronunciation so that we had Atene for Athens, Koroniti for Corinth, and Hiruharama for Jerusalem, but how London became Ranana was difficult to comprehend!"
Simple:
There is no "L" sound in Te Reo Maori, so the "R" phoneme replaces it when making a Maori word out of an English one.
There is also an example of that in Hiruharama for Jerusalem, but he failed to notice that.
More information:

Unfortunately I bumped a button on the camera to a wrong setting and a lot of my photo's didn't come out great with the sky being washed out or a bit fuzzy.
Here's some of the better ones, I'm not great on names the first time round so any I haven't named let me know and I'll add the names in.
1) Our accomodation Friday night at the Convent in Jerusalem
2) The view out the window above my head
3) From the outside. Our beds were on the top floor of the building on the left
4) Gerard (BoGSer) on the BIG GS on Fishers Track

1) Gerard (BoGSer) again on Fishers Track
2) Stephen (Aslan) on Fishers Track
3) Gerard (BoGSer) about to tackle one of the steep stream exits on the 42 Traverse
4) One of the DR650's on the same crossing
The camera doesn't give a real impression of how steep and high these stream exits were. I am zoomed in a fair bit there on a 300mm zoom. There were 3 or 4 of them at at least a 45 degree rise and the shortest must have been at least 25-30 feet.
Thats how they felt to me anyway.

A big thanks to Aslan for organising this. It was organised enough to have a purpose and route to our destinations but loose enough we could throw in some variations on the way.
So here's where we went:
Friday:
Met at various points and headed up the Whanganui River road to Jerusalem
Saturday.
Jerusalem to Raetahi to meet the Te Aroha boys.
Lucy I tooted as we passed your place but it looked like no-one was at home. There was a note on the door.
On to National Park were we dropped out bags at our accomodation.
Fishers track from National Park to Owhango.
Owhango to Kapoors road
42 Traverse starting at Kapoors Road
Owhango back to National Park after farewelling the Te Aroha boys
Sunday:
National Park to Ohakune
Ohakune domain loop
Matiare Road (cattle route from near the domain back to the Ohakune-Waiouru road)
Whangaehu Valley road to Marton then to Bulls.
We said our goodbyes at Bulls and went home our separate ways, where some of the boys headed to the beach.
The GPS says I did 809km, though it switched off a couple of times and I reckon an even 900 would be closer. I have track logs of most of it but haven't tried sorting them out yet. Hopefully I can isolate Fishers Track and the 4 Traverse and Whangaehu Valley Road, as well as Thompson's track in Te Aroha from the weekend before and load them into CooneyR's site.

Would a lone klr be ok going through it all?

I would have to say no, not due to the difficulty itself but the risk of not being able to extracate yourself if something went wrong.
Fishers track was a bit slippery in places but overall pretty good with only 1 place that could have caused real issues which was the fallen tree stump, there is a risk there of breaking something on you or the bike as the drop off was several feet high, damp and pretty much vertical. You can see in Pampa's photo of me sitting on top of it how high it is. And you would only get over it from the direction we went.
42 Traverse overall was firm, dry and easy with mostly gentle undulating track, however if you got stuck on one of those stream exits you would be well and truly stuffed with a serious risk on a couple of them of not being able to go forwards or backwards as the drop in was as steep if not steeper than the exit and some were quite muddy. Ask Aslan about that.

Eddie is referring to a particularly long and steep exit on the 42nd- sandy and quite rutted - that I had three attempts at before calling for help having slid back down on 3 occassions by which time I was getting tired keeping the DR upright and turning it side on in order to run back down for another attempt. Coupla factors here - my skill level and gearing 14T front sprocket. Suspect this is one where Jamie (aka Ducati Jim) would advocate use of a 13T engine sprocket on a DR.
Mark - I've done Fishers alone on my DR350 - relatively fine but I wouldn't recommend you do the Traverse by yourself

Aye if you had a kT 950 it would be peace of cake as Brent (was it Brent?) show us how to do it quick an easy, proof is no pics of him since he was miles away ahead ... and with tourances. Also let me add that with a kT 640A it was even easier, allowed Mark to do some pretty tricky things over tree stump
Now with a Klr it may be trickier to do alone for the reasons stated by Eddie, in a group u shouldn't have any problem. Obviously depends on your level of confidence/skills.
I personally think that Fishers was trickier than 42 despite of being shorter although didn't have much problem going through it. The vertical drops were pretty scary for me. Muddy and slippery even with the lack of rain.
I didn't lay the bike on the whole track :woohoo: and i'm a professional at that
Cheers,
Pampa

The longest, sandiest exit by quite a margin I'd say, with a muddy slow run up. Probably close on twice the rise as the other exits.
Judging on how you handled the other exits, even after exhausting yourself on that one, I'd say it was more setup than skill level that was lacking.

Yes, a great weekend, made perfect as far as I am concerned by the run down the beach as we were getting closer to home Sunday. Thanks Aslan, for pulling this together, and thanks to the rest of the mob for making it such an enjoyable experience. I have a stack of pics but a lot of them would be repetitive so will just test my skills by attempting to load some of the better ones.
Starting with the finish, a couple of shots of 'the beach boys' grinning widely. And my absolute favourite, 'Fishers' cottage' (??). Rough access but looks reasonably comfortable to justify the journey. It is at the end of Fishers Road anyways. While we are on Fisher's the next 2 are Fred and Eddie on the track, and finally the bikes at rest before moving on to do the 42nd.

Ugh, grotty images, I can supply clearer versions on request.
This lot takes up the voyage at Hurihama where we see our leader settling in to the lodgings, and the scene next morning as we prepare to launch. Then the demolition of pies at Raetihi. [At this point I have to acknowledge a gem of wisdom from our initially fierce hostess of the night before, she redeemed herself by informing me that Raetihi's superb wide main street was made that way to allow the bullocky's to turn their wagons - not, as I had long imagined, because of any visions of grandeur on the part of the towns founders.]
Now, where were we ? Oh yes, fast forward now to the entry to the 42nd crossing, and a side step to Aslan at the Ohakune Domain and part of the Troup on the nearby paper road. Here goes nuttin'.

We were really fortunate with the weather - most agreed both the Fishers and the 42nd would not have been fun after a lot of rain.
Jerusalem and the Whanganui National Park including the River Road is a magic place as is the Whangehu Valley
National Park hotel under present management - Matt and Chef (name sorry) looked after us really well. Bed $30 - $35, Roast Dinner $18 and big Kiwi Breakfast $12 - Dinner bed and breakfast all for $60 close to the Traverse and Fishers really great.
Relieved no one was hurt - things can certainly go wrong very quickly.
Great camaraderie from all the guys - a truly fun adventure.
PM me with your email if you'd like pics I have of you. Will attempt to post more tomorrow night.

big thanks to Eddie and Fred for coming to my rescue when I could not muster the energy to negotiate the steepest of stream exits.
Prolly as Eddie said at the time I wasn't giving the DR enough 'Welly'. Certainly know with the heat and the weight I was really feeing stuffed when I agreed Fred should ride my DR out for me. Cheeky bugger then tells me it has less puff than his DRZ!

My 2 cents worth. What a great weekend good weather great group and good tracks. Thanks to Stephen for bringing the group and ride together and for the guys from Te Aroha Mark & Brett with there experience for showing the way especially through the 42nd Traverse. I believe but did'nt see that Brett was the first bike over the tree stump on the Fishers without even stopping to take a look Now that is confidence. I take my hat off to you.
As for the favourite Tracks I found that the 42nd to be my pick of the day. The big 1100 { 240 Kgs ) plus me does not like any wet slippery grass and I am always waiting for the front end to wash out which I must confess that did happen on the Fisher Track sending me for a dishonourable dismount one corner before the tree stump. But hay this was a adventure challange ride right. Back to the 42nd I enjoyed it plenty of grip on the day, wet well that would be a different story.
Alas Father Busajim & Friar Marks I will spill the beans
When we entered the 42nd Brett was leading and Mak was in hot persuit in a cloud of dust. At a fork in the track Brett had to stop in a hurry which will become obvious when Stephen puts up my photos and by the time Brett came through the dust and saw the obstacle had no option but to put his bike down. I would not have called this a drop but a very well executed life preserving maneuver.
Mark I hope the pain is going away and you are on the road to recovery and well done for riding the rest of the track.
The obstacle was a un-signposted closed road with 2 wire ropes across it.
As for easy or a challange depends on what you are riding.
An 1100 GS anything of gravel or tarseal can be considered a challange at one time or another A DZR400 makes it all look easy
I enjoy the challange for now anyway.
Thanks to all who where there. hope to see you out there again soon

where it crosses NZ is nowhere bloody near National Park!
It is close to Murchison and Westport however. Why does everyone call it the 42nd Traverse?

The track traverses the old state forest 42.........so they called it the 42nd traverse. Ta Da!
Do they actually let you out of Waihi on your own? :chase:
Google 42 traverse and lots of mountain biking info and track pictures etc pop up, thats how I started off finding out about it.
More useless facts, it's 46 kms long and best ridden from Kapoors road to Owhango cause the pubs at Owhango and, once you've found it on your map, have a look on Google Earth and you can find it there and get some idea of the topography.

Maps? what are those?
Mostly we just follow the person who has the least vague idea about where we are going and each rider keeps half an eye on the person behind them so no-one gets left behind.
I did have a GPS on this ride though and have GPX tracklogs of Fishers Track & 42 Traverse, as well as Ratamaire Road, Ohakune Domain loop, Whanganui River Road and Whangaehu Valley Road all of which we did on this trip. Plus I've got the Matamata side of Thompsons track from the weekend before. I think these can be imported into Google Earth as well.
