so i took my dads new bike out for a wee test and at some speed over the limit i thought hmm probably not a good idea in the dark, could be livestock around(i never think like this). so i slow down and right in the middle of my lane is a huge black bull staring at me unmoved... i rightly shit my pants and dodge it but think that that wouldnt have been possible back when i was doing twice the speed as i had. jeezus

Yesterday I was at home.
Warm day, nothing to do.
Go for a ride , said the "little voice"
So I togged up, got out the beast and headed off down Scargill Valley road.
Those in the know down here in Cant know it is a road used very very often by many many bikes most every week end. 27k's of nice road, a pleasure to play on.
Tootling along at 110kph enjoying the ride, as you do. Normally I'm at a higer speed than 110kph on this road as its such a good road to ride, and so do many others who ride it. Many many others!
But 110kph was where I felt good.
I rounded a corner, holy shit!
A mob of sheep on the road. Thank god I was doing 110kph!
Parking up the old Exsessive,
I rounded up the sheep and put them back in the paddock they had only just come out of, not a hard job at all. found some no8 gauge wire and latched the gate after seeing that the chain had broken which would have secured it shut.
So what? you may say.
Well this section of the road was between two nice straghts, had good corners and there was no reason that you could not be setting a good pace comming on to it.
But if you had, it would have been very very nasty, 20+ sheep are not something you want to run over on your afternoon strop ! You would NOT have stopped in time!
So I tootled off again on my ride just to meet up with some of the CHCH crew heading the opp way at a good pace....they WOULD have hit the sheep.
Thank God for the "little voice"
It was only reading the first post that I thought about this and about the fact I was ridding on an impulse, not planned, I just did it. I'm glad I did, or some of our mates would be wearing wooly jumpers right now as they lay in Hospital.
That small quiet voice in you head often can save you or others from a fate that is not nice, listen to it when you can.

If you hit wandering stock then the farmer is liable for the damages.

But that's a very small comfort when your bike is smashed up and you're in the hospital.

Country roads definitely have a smaller envelope of safety.

had my fair share of hitting cows and sheep....lost control once when a bee decided to visit the insides of my helmet years ago....dropped the bike...jumped off and too the helmet off only to get stung on my neck:doctor:

a nice gentle pulling over and opening the visor gets rid of bees easily enough... had it years ago after my accident. took me a couple of k to figure how to get rid of him though, lol.

I was backing my Bedford van out of the drive on one occasion years ago. This was done blind to anything under about six feet tall because the drive is slightly elevated. On one occasion for some reason I got an uncomfortable feeling so I stopped the van and walked around the back. There was a kid, a knee biter, sitting there on a trike.

If I hadn't stopped I'd have run him over.

Lucky! Always listen to that nagging little voice.

I almost plowed into two horses when I came around the last bend from Whitecliffs to Glentunnel on my way to work at 4:30am years ago (in car)- I was so glad that I was taking it easy as I knew I wasn't awake enough yet--The horses got me awake bloody quick:shit:

Gotta agree with the little voice trend I am seeing here. Was coming around a blind corner which is bloody fun to fly around as I usually do but this one time I got a bad feeling and decided to just do the speed limit around it and on the other side were 2 farm dogs on the side of the road and as i got ready to stomp on the brakes sure enough they both ran out and I missed them by about 20cm. Sure enough I would have hit them if I did the odd 150 I have been doing around that corner previously...Rural roads...Ignored the voice once and kept the throttle open...it was night i could only see car headlights (as you do) and the car i just flew past at loss of license speeds turned around to follow me and thinking it was the same guy who usually dicks around like he is going to race me I started opening up the throttle more...Untill I see the BLUE lights:clap: Then crapped myself thinking i was about to get thrown off my bike and arrested for running but thankfully he just told me what i could have lost in fines and licence etc etc but left right after he even checked out my bike to pull up a boyracer up the road doing burnouts...haha luv those civics:2thumbsup
