Bolt coil break

While I was doing an oil and filter change, I accidentally over tightened one of the bolt for the Engine Oil Filter Cover and it made a snap sound inside. When I took it out, I realised that the inside of the screw (coil on the wall) broke and came loose. The bolt still tightnes but not very much, and hence I found out that the engine oil leaks quite abit by the untightened cover.

This may sound stupid but the question is, how can I fix the internal wall coil? I heard from xwhatsit about a helicoil, what is that?

Guess I'll leave the bike at home for now since I found that the oil can spit to the rear tyre when riding at speed.

EJ, what size is the bolt? Or even better let me know exactly which one it is and I will look on my FXR. Might be able to come fix it for you tomorrow if you are home?

Don't panic yet. Sounds like a helicoil will fix it, cheap as. Just take to someone who has used one before. :rolleyes:

the bottom right (same as the left) bolt of the Engine Oil Filter bolt.

No I don't have a drill (just got my first 11 Piece Spanner Set).

It is in town.

Might have to bring out some old tricks for this one.

Plan is to get a bigger bolt, but UNF thread, only one size up, then drill out the cover hole so it goes through, then start threading it in until it binds up with the old thread nice and tight. Because the two threads are different you can get it nice and tight just like new.

For a second I thought I had to replace the whole side of the engine case to fix this one :laugh:

Have you bought a new bike (or stolen one) EJK? I thought yours was green. Hope you get it sorted quick so you can do the South Island. Any small engine / engineering workshop should be able to help.

Might want to be just a *wee* bit cautious drilling around there. That'll be pressurised oil, and there may well be oil galleries and such in the vicinity. Wouldn't want to drill into one of those.

Problem solved (I want to belive atleast).

Boostin told me to go to Taylor Automotive in Grafton, so I did.
They couldn't get the helicoil that deep (long bolt) so they gave me a longer bolt to make the use of the threads far behind the hole(?)

And the cost? Well I would like to make a NZ joke: "In New Zealand, you can do anything with a box of beer."

No reason to butcher anything when a decent fix is available.
