Now that Quasi has got me into a strait jacket, I can't wear a million layers under it......so looks like I might have to upgrade the level of merino thermals I wear underneath.
So what brands do you like? What weight do you prefer? Where did you get 'em? How much didja pay? Anything else you'd like to tell me?
Thanks all......

I've got a variety of stuff, but if you go for Icebreaker, it comes in different weights (thicknesses), so you can pick'n'choose according to the weather of the moment.

Icebreaker all the way! You smell like a skunk at the end of a days' riding in polyprops. With Merino gear, you can sweat all you like and you don't smell for several days. Wore it continuously on the Southern Cross endurance ride (errr... and Mangell6 and Jantar didn't insist that I found my own accomodation :laugh:)

Finally!......I have looked at Icebreaker - expensive but not that much more than other labels.....+$30 for the 260gsm, top and bottom. Just wondering if I can save the odd dollar by checking other brands or outlets?
I have plenty lighter weight merino stuff - just need heavies for colder weather. And I can't stand polyprop either....seems to lock the cold IN not OUT....

Dunno. But the Icebreaker stuff is usually cheapest from their shop.
I've got a variety of stuff, and only just recently(ish) bought some Icebreaker (the factory outlet shop is on the road I work on). I've got a top that I wear sometimes, as it's ideal for our mental aircon at work: if I wear a shirt on its own, I get cold, and if I wear a sweatshirt or whatever over it, I get hot sometimes during the day. However, if I wear the Icebreaker top I bought, it's fine, and also great on the bike. Other woolly tops I've got are usually a bit warm in the office.
FWIW, the top I've got was $80 (I think) which was better value than the other tops I bought for around the same price - they all shrunk, despite being carefully hand-washed. The Icebreaker stuff they actually recommend you just chuck in the machine with your jeans - it's better if you don't give it special care.

What's your budget?
I have Rev It thermals which are really good but might be over your budget. You could also get something like this...
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Fishing/Apparel/Waders/auction-184085067.htm
but that might be too expensive too.
Why are you after thermals at this time of the year anyway. I've been looking at athletic base layers stuff in Rebel Sport for summer because my thermal stuff is getting a bit warm. They are supposed to keep you at a constant temperature but they are bloody expensive too.

CRT currently have 25% off winter woollies. Thermerino offer good quality but basic styles in New Zealand merino. I think they are made here in NZ too, which matters to me, but maybe not to you.
Icebreaker is great, but dearer and manufactured off shore.

Gaah!
They've got a sale on at the moment (weird - I thought they always had a sale), so they're not answering their phone. I'll try again later (might pop down at lunchtime and see them).

1. Budget around $250 but preferably less!!!
2. Buying now for next winter reasoning that I might pick something up cheaper buying out of season......
And for what it's worth I have plenty of summer weight stuff so no prob there.....

A lot of the outlet store's stuff is last season's anyway, or 'seconds'. I asked what was worngA with some of the seconds, and they were lacking the Icebreaker logo. It's all guaranteed and returnable anyway, unlike sale stuff in other stores, so it's not a big deal.

heres where i look like a bit of a knob ...
i hate tight fitting thermals, when they get hot i feel really uncomfortable. so i went to spotlight and bought a heap of polar fleece for about $15 and made my own. for $15 i made pants and a top and still have enough left over to make about another 3-4 sets! ive made the pants with a bit up the back that can keep my back warm.
best $15 ive spent

Top effort that! Non natural fibres stink when they get sweaty though DAMHIK.
For me merino longjohns, and long sleeved singlet all the way :blip:
I also have a merino longsleeved top I wear over top if it is really cold. Soaks up the sweat, and does not smell. It rinses out over night, and even if it is a bit damp the next day, you can put it on :cold: and your body heat soon takes care of the cold, it then continues to keep you warm.

Not that I know of.
I think you're thinking of 'iceberg', which is a type of lettuce.
Or maybe you were thinking of edible undies....
Don't think those are usually made of lettuce though...
