I have some sympathy for the general principles that the Green Party stands for.

However I cannot stand the patronising and controlling policies that they're advocating. As this post (http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2008/10/the_greens_banned_list.html) illustrates, they're possibly the worst offender when it comes to nanny-state politics.

According to their official policy releases, here is the list of things that they want to ban in New Zealand:

Ban fizzy drinks from schools

Hey lets return to the Bronze age!
No, making bronze requires too much energy.
I suspect the Greens would be happy if we returned to pre-stone age technology.
As long as we didn't burn anything. So make that "before we discovered fire".

In fact, if you look at the ultimate root of Greenie thought, it's that humans are fucking over the earth, and it would be a good thing if we were eradicated.

How many of those are actually true?

For example, Ban landfills. Do they actually have a policy completely against landfills or more policy in favour of recycling.

Same with the motorway banning. A ban or just a focus on public transport?

They have some good ideas but the application of their solutions is a little strong.

I mean "limit violent child abuse" -> "ban all smacking of any kind including verbal dissemination" might be taking that banner a little too far y'know

Waste Free New Zealand Policy (http://www.greens.org.nz/policy/waste)

Landfills

The Green Party will:
Phase out the use of landfills by:

a. ensuring that local authority waste management plans set out a clear vision for the phasing out of landfills including:
1. promoting and implementing the source separation of waste into streams as an essential part of the transition from landfill dependency to resource reduction and renewal;
2. establishing sorting/recycling/resource recovery centres;
3. setting landfill acceptance criteria for hazardous waste (until national standards are set);

b. requiring user charges to reflect the full social & environmental, as well as economic and capital costs of maintaining landfills;

c. establish financial incentives for reducing waste to landfill, including investigation into establishing a national levy on waste to landfill in order to help fund waste reduction initiatives;

d. investigating ways that operators of landfills and incinerators can be held responsible for the long term environmental effects of their facilities.

Same with the motorway banning. A ban or just a focus on public transport?

Transport Policy (http://www.greens.org.nz/policy/transport)

2. Land Transport Planning and Funding

The Green Party will work to:

Pass the Climate Change (Transport Funding) Bill to rebalance expenditure from the National Land Transport Fund, over five years, towards support for sustainable transport solutions (such as public transport, rail freight, coastal shipping, active modes and travel demand management) to redress the chronic lack of investment in this area, funded through a moratorium on major new urban motorways and highways.

However I am fascinated that the Green Party policies are defined not by what the party wants, but rather what the party wants to eliminate.

That list is from the well known right wing site site kiwiblog that will do anything to bash the left wing including distort the truth.

I would argue that this "ban" list should be taken with a grain of salt. Why? Well from the first banned item to be looked into "BAN LANDFILLS", turned out to be a more palatable "phasing out of landfills" - hardly likely landfills would be gone unless we had another means of disposal. Good example of the one-sided war of kiwiblog versus truth.

They also want to ban guns as well, so any hunters out there, enjoy it while you can.
All I can see on the list is ban semi-automatic weapons.

Why do you think civilians should be banned from owning semi-automatic weapons?

Because when we get sick of the greens, they want to make sure we don't have too many weapons lying around.

The banning of fuel guzzling SUVs (Hooray!!) is a short step to banning any motorcycle with an engine bigger than 500cc (Boo!!).

I'd like to see a congestion charge to get big vehicles (mainly SUVs) off the motorways (especially in peak time), i.e.

Bike/Scooter: Free
Car: $3/trip (exc couriers)
Van/SUV: $5/trip

your an idiot, a suv doesn't take up much more room length and width wise that a car or a van. taxing them is going to solve nothing. all you are going to do it tax farmers and large families. smart.

Banning semi auto guns, because a lever action isn't just as fast aye? moronic comment from a moronic person. But semis are really bad because they are used in crime. Yes NZ has a very large amount of semi automatic gun crime. Oh wait no it doesn't.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what the action is, when its pointed at you dose it.

Not even taking into consideration the 100's of thousands of semi autos in NZ, what about 10's of thousands of fully automatic wepons in nz? Better ban those too aye. Oh yeah pistols, we dont have strong enough laws on those - better ban them. Damn, better ban the ammo and knifes too. Shit better ban the home loaders from making there own ammo!

After all that banning, whats the result going to be? well all the criminals i know are stand up guys so if the law says they cant own a gun, they will comply with the law - they are only into murder and theft aye not gun crime!

Man i love it when everyone is treated like a criminal. especially when its not going to change a damn thing.

Heck, lets ban all firearms in NZ all 2 million of them. (conservative guess)

Yeah, but if they were the government you would also get the 20% that is outright fuckin' stupid!

A lot of what's on the list is bad stuff that sensible people would try to avoid/cut down/whatever, but do we need the nanny state to ban it?

There is plenty of stuff I have no problem with, but:
I think consumers should be able to decide if they are comfortable with eating GE food or not - there is absolutely NO evidence of any danger (well, no more danger than non GE foods) for the commercially available GE foods.
I think consumers should be able to decide if they want to eat junk food, I don't believe eating high fat KFC once every 3 months or so will hurt me.

I also think we should consider nuclear power as it is environmentally friendly and produces much more power than solar or wind.

There - that should upset the hippies!

I think all that needs to be told to people is this fact right here (http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2008/10/general_debate_28_october_2008.html#comment-501512)

I see the Greens won some advertising accolade over the weekend for their billboards. As a mother that they should be allowed to prostitute images of children to further their own political aims in this way makes me completely sick.

This is the Greens real voting record on issues that directly effect NZ’s children.

2003: P (Methamphetamine) reclassified as a Class A drug – only the Greens opposed
2006: Opposed an increase to the Drinking Age
2005: Intentional Possession of Child Pornography -Only the Greens opposed the maximum penalty being 5 years – wanted it lower at 2 years
2007: Want to decriminalise Marijuana
SOFT ON THE REAL CAUSES OF CHILD ABUSE YET THEY WANT TO CRIMINALISE PARENTS WHO GIVE THEIR KIDS A SMACK

The Greens are absolute hypocrites because if they weren’t they would also oppose abortion on the same grounds they oppose smacking

“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. . . . the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child . . . it portrays the child as, an intrusion and an inconvenience ”

Quotes by Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Because unlike the Greens, Mother Teresa’s actions spoke louder than her words.

Why on earth would they oppose increasing the max prison sentence for child porn?? I cannot understand why anyone with a level head would vote for them. All of the people that do are just voting for the name of the party and the logo, nothing to do with policy. How on earth do you get through to someone like that?? :2guns:

too bad National will have neither the numbers nor any credible coalition partners to do just that...what do you have to do to get the Torys in these days? More air time to Guyon on one? Duncan on three? Give away the Dominion Post/NZ Herald? Stop immigration? Execute foreigners or the poor?

List MPs should be allocated proportionally on top of the electorate seats, giving more influence to members who actually have a direct mandate from their constituencies - dunno what that system's called, some wonk will no doubt inform us.

I am beginning to think that all list MP's MUST be standing for an electorate to be on "the list" of their party. The lunatic fringe (green...) do not represent an electorate but wish to represent an uninformed few who wish to enact punishment on the nation through increased regulations, fewer individual rights and exhorbitant taxation.

slashing of health and social services,

As I pointed out to your fellow lefties that run The Stranded yesterday, there is a correlation between tax cuts and spending on public services however this government has proven conclusively that there is absolutely no correlation between spending on public services and the quality they provide.

I would suggest that you go back and read this thread (and the myriad of others like it) properly to see where the outrageous comments and abuse originate from, but I suspect that you'll see only what suits you anyway so that would be a waste of time.

One needs only to have a think back to the 90s and take one look at the dead wood that would form a National cabinet to gain some vision of what that shower have lined up. The watered down comments about incremental change and outright ommission in terms of policy beyond TAX CUTS, TAX CUTS and LAW AND ORDER, LAW AND ORDER demonstrate just how robust and popular their agenda is.

Key's other favourite subject - THE ECONOMY shows the success of a free-market and deregulation. Incidently, I found it interesting how in the U.S and British goverments so suddenly though that State intervention was essential.

Why won't the greedy goverment stop blindly accumulating a huge surplus at the expense of hard working New Zealanders? Hmmm - I'm sure massive borrowing and tax cuts would have been just the thing for times like these...and running THE ECONOMY is supposed to be Key's strong point. Fiscal responsibilty? Give me a break

Yes clearly first past the post which was a far fairer system - where 70% of the public can vote against Coke but cause Pepsi got only 28%, Coke become the government.

For the record I would much prefer a voting system that would provide for much more proportional representation:

STV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_vote

Honour!

This is politics, we're talking about, right?

The only reason a party needs a coalition partner, or partners, is to guarantee supply. From there on it is, or should be, all downhill for the major partner. I thought the Greens were piss weak in the last term - they could have tried to force much more through, if they weren't a pack of pansies! Democracy? What percentage of voters didn't vote for Liabour last election?

Doesn't quite grasp the concept of proportional representation does he?

This is from Wikipedia - I have even highlighted the most relevant part for you as it appears you are quite slow:

"Proportional representation (sometimes referred to as full representation, or PR), is a category of electoral formula aiming at a close match between the percentage of votes that groups of candidates (grouped by a certain measure) obtain in elections and the percentage of seats they receive (usually in legislative assemblies). PR is a democratic principle rather than an electoral system in itself. It is often contrasted to plurality voting systems, where disproportional seat distribution results from the division of voters into multiple electoral districts, especially "winner takes all" plurality ("first past the post" or FPTP) districts".

I'm voting ACT, work it out for yourself.

Can you not get your head around the fact that there is no left wing presence in New Zealand politics or media?

Does that all fit on a Tui billboard? Welcome to my ignore list.

Exactly how many of Sir Roger's reforms have been repealed? Exactly none. The bloke saved the fucking country, and does he get any thanks from the general populace? Fat fucking chance.

OK you voting Act or Nazis this election?

Look at how well he created a social underclass and dropped working New Zealanders standard of living. Didn't he do well...I suppose it provides a good excuse to shout about LAW & ORDER rathether than having to focus on your policies are just more of that same agenda - Privatise.

The cunt should be hung.

What a revelation...and what was that about politicians entering parliament on the strength of a party vote?

Go back and hide under the rock you came from.

P.S is that your scooter in your profile picture? Noted

:clap:LOL , Im voting ACT to why? because I have a Brain that thinks for itself and I dont need a beauracrat to tell me how to live, unlike a Labour voter who wants the Bums and tax draining low lifes to be secured in their lazy arse life on the couch whining about how unfortunate they are

If it wasnt for the reforms Mr Douglas did in the 80's you would be still under the communist agenda regime, ie import restrictions (tho shalt buy only one brand of fridge one brand of carpet and no you may not subscribe and recieve a foreign magazine etc etc etc).

A Vote for left Labour/ Green/NZ FIRST etc is a vote for social agendas and backward thinking economies, just like what we have now......you can embrace it and keep NZ in the Non advancing state its been in for years, you can be bleed dry by the lying decieving BS self indulging cronnies who call them selfs leaders (WTF) Im voting to give NZ a chance on a positive growth economy where we as individuals have freedom of how we spend our own money.

Nice another self confessed fascist...must be why you've got nearly 4500 posts on this forum alone - no life, no meaningful relationships, a shitty little businessman focussed on SELF

As I've made quite clear throughout I'm no supporter or apologist for Labour - I see them as a lesser evil

I also wonder Quasi whether an ACT/National government will be good to a motorcycle apparel peddling business?

More intriguing for me is whether being an out of the closet ACT party voter will be good for business?

Don't worry - I'll spread the word among those I know

Because "the political is personal". Some people's values or lack of them are repugnant to me and around this time it bothers me that their lack of conscience or complete ignorance will affect me and those I love.

P.S. What medication would you prescribe for intolerance doctor?

Lack of values? Oh like the green's values towards child porn or the reclassification of P and don't forget being all for the murdering of innocent unborn babies.

But seriously, if you were serious at all about trying to get the point across you wouldn't stoop to personal abuse. You really need to get a grip and grow up cause its starting to get really old.

The parties to avoid will have "co-leaders" since they do not have a single person posessive of enough brains to be a proper leader.

Poor Jim Anderton. Even the left wing no longer recognises him as one of their own.

What makes labour far left? Free trade policies are not a hallmark of the left, and we have them with China and Chile thanks to labour, not to mention the impending deal with the USA.

Banning = authoritarian, nothing to do with left or right.

The left-wing hallmarks of the Labour government include:

Increased regulation
Increased government spending
Enlargement of the civil service
Re-nationalisation of infrastructure (ACC, the railways)
Overly generous welfare system

IMHO the Greens arent really Green anyway.

They have an organic grandma in nominal charge.

But the vast majority of greens are marxist or socialist, or stoned or stupid (or any combination thereof) and just seem to be grabbing the green tag as a flag of convenience.

Lets look at the carbon trading scam.

It sounds great - bad industries buy carbon fron good industries, thus punishing the polluter.

But in reality, in a rural country like ours, the bad industries are essential ones, that we can't really cut.

Like food production, dairy, and electricity.

Putting up the input costs to these guys will just result in higher prices for us all, not less carbon prduction.

Electricity and quality food will just be rationed, with the dollar coin as your ration card.

We will force the poor, our pensioners and low waged to either use less, or buy a lower quality product.

Will it help ? Nope, as only the poor will be hurt.
