Old Yammy starter noisy.

I've got a 1981 XV 1000(or TR1) Yamaha, it has a nasty noise,sounds like slipping when I hit the starter switch.
What I need is a motorcycle mechanic with actual experience on this particular starter system.

This one is a solenoid and starter clutch not slipping plates so it's different from the usual Yammy starter problem.
So any help with names of mechanics or experienced persons would be gratefully accepted.<_<

These things had real problems with the starter system, both the 1000's and 750's. There was a fix for them, which was a quite involved job and not cheap, but for the life of me I can not remember exactly what the fix was, but I do recall that it was not a cheap fix.

Yes, very common XV fault. Whereas every other motorcycle (except HD) uses a constant mesh starter with a one way clutch, Yamaha had the crazy idea of using a starter motor with a throw out pinion like those used in cars. As with cars the pinion and flywheel ring gear teeth wear and then cause meshing problems. As has been said, not a cheap fix.

(Yamaha kindly provided though, a magnet inside the engine under the starter pinion to catch the metal filings that would otherwise be let loose inside the engine. How thoughtful of them).

I think the OPs model is the TR1. Which used a different system, utilising a solenoid instead of the Virago throw out pinion.

Well I thank you one and all for the replies, since posting I have cleaned up all electrical connections and today replaced the existing battery with a much more powerful one also replaced all burnt or work hardened wires to and from the battery.
Hit her in the guts and she fired first time and strongly.
Went for a blast and all good, got home turned her off and went for the restart again, Na! same old noise, but faster, solenoids and all other electrical items to be checked next.
Then starter motor out and brushes and bushes replaced, seems not to be mechanical but an electrical component not working properly, cheers guys, still would like to hear of or from anyone who has experienced this problem with the 1000cc XV 1981.

Well last week my old mate and motorcycle mechanic , Young Laurie from Panmure Motorcycles fixed the starter problem i've had for the alst 6 months.
The sweet sound of gears meshing and starter motors starting is AWESOME to say the least, cheers ol Mr Laurie.
Problem solved. The XV 1000 has a stater motor and on the end of that a starter clutch, BUTT inside the starter motor itslef there is another clutch, this needed to be shimmed .
It was an now my baby starts first time everytime.

Re starter problem, I have just bought a Yamaha 1984 XV750 from a tool maker who had a problem with his starter and found that the cogs had no lead in edges on them. He put the lead edges on the teeth so they mesh smoothly and has had no trouble since. Hope this might help you. I have only just bought the bike and delivery is next week. It is a restoration job for the winter months.
