does any one here have a bike alarm - and use it? Been wondering if it's worth it or not.. When I was calling around for the insurance on the bike, I asked about any discount on an alarm being fitted, and they all said no, and that there's no point to them.
I've also seen those GPS trackers, which I know Chubb NZ do them thru their TrackIt system, but I'm not sure how much it is to install and then the annual fee..
Also seen a few things on trademe, which has caught my eye, but then I wonder if it's worth it.. I have a disc lock, but an alarm too..??
Plus I've seen this, and the discription is winding me up something chronic.

What's the point of having an 'overtaking warning'...???
amongst other things on it.. All seems to fall into that 'too good to be..' catagory..
just wanted to see peeps views on it all really..

I had a gorilla alarm on my VFR750. It was just a cheapy - Kept the cats off the seat.... Stopped working after a year. Wouldn't bother with another alarm. Put the money saved towards insurance. Just my opinion. P.S I don't see why i'd want to start my bike from my bedroom or anywhere else but right by the bike so remote starting for me is not a draw card.

Well bugger me.... read my threads on this very subject and you'll see Ive just ripped mine out. Have to say it gave good service as it was fitted new in 99. But since getting the bike shipped over at Christmas, the bloody remote started to play up. (and I lost the spare...doh!) so rather than fork out silly money to get another remote fom the UK, then fart about re-programming it, i bit the bullet and took the alarm out. Sods law the bike will get knicked now! Think about it though, with an alarm or any security device you are only buying time. If they want your bike bad enough, it will be carried away and bundled into a van. Jo Public tends to ignore car/bike alarms in my experience. A novice thief might spot a simple flashing LED on your dash and walk away cos he thinks its alarmed. How much is one of them in Dick Smiths? Six bucks? Nuff said.

yeah, was ment to say a ref to your post.. that had me thinking about an alarm (well, been thinking before readying your post, but it re-prompted my brain).. shhame yours buggered up really, but I can see why you'd rather rip it out over replace the fob thingy. You probably have, but have you tried going to a car alarm specialist and asking their advice on yours? They might be able to fix it up..
Also, on removing the alarm, fingers crossed it starts afterwards! I've seen some people take the alarms off, only to find the system is so well integrated, that the engine won't run without it!

I use a XENA alarmed disc lock and i really like it!
i works like a regular disc lock but it gets really loud when it gets tilted (someone sits on the bike ) or shaken.
sure if someone took off ur wheel or put the whole thing on a truck they could have it but theres no way (other than removing from wheel or leaving it alone) to shut them up and it will attract plenty of attention :ar15: :wavey: !
the other (main function) of the noisy disc lock is that you cannot ride off without removing it (cos its LOUD ) thus making it "idiot proof" :2thumbsup
it is fairly sensitive and goes off ( 10sec blast ) by itself sometimes ( especially if left in the wind ) but i like the security so I use it wenever i leave my toy anywhere

Pretty similar to you BJ,
Freelance GDer. Use PhotoshopCS mostly to do web and print stuff, but main forte is TV graphics. (ex BBC TV in UK) Still looking for new clients as Im really only just starting where I left off in the UK. Still using G4 lappy for all jobs. Love it to death. Like you, can't get my head round those things Bill Gates churns out. iTunes keeps me entertained as I write too...

One word. HISS.
That's actually two words and an acronym representing three words, for the pedantrists out there. :Pokey:
It's a good idea, the HISS, except if you lose both keys. Also the HISS-equipped bikes get that nice plastic doofer (technical term) that turns the ignition switch into a miniature catchment area...
Htcher - do you have trouble inserting the key in your ignition? I haven't worked out what it is, but unless I get the key in just the right position, and thrust it in with some authority (like, while shouting "Fear my prong!!"), it won't go in.

Oh. Yeah, I see what you mean. :blank:
I hadn't actually intended any innuendo, otherwise I would've been a bit less subtle, for those KBers who don't understand innuendo and subtlety...
And in response to the last bit, it doesn't appear to be a lubrication problem, as it's the first bit of the key that won't go in, but I guess I should try some WD40 or CRC and see if that helps.

something like Honda Identity Security System. Basically a factory fitted immobilser for the ignition. There's an ID chip in the key and it transponds the code to the bike. If all works out, the bike starts..

I think bugjuice is almost right - I think it's "Honda Integrated (or Ignition?) Security System". It means unless you have the original microchipped key, the bike won't go, so the old "jam the screwdriver in the ignition and turn" trick won't work. Neither will a key cut using the original. Bikes with the HISS system have a small tag attached to the original key, which the owner has to keep, so if he loses both keys, he/she can order a replacement from Honda ("I'm sorry -that will have to be ordered ex-Japan, and will take at least three weeks by our slowest rowboat, and will cost ten times what is reasonable, and 40% more than if you ordered it from a Honda dealer in Australia and they ordered it from their Honda Japan. Now fuck off and stop bothering us. Waddya mean, "Customer Service"?!? Are you insane?!? We're not here to serve customers!!")
Oh. Sorry. Got a bit carried away there...
