has the dent on the tank been fixed yet? your dad didn't look too happy about it :P
right now we're focusing on the brake lever
also, it would appear both tyres are borderline for wof purposes so i'll likely be replacing them tomorrow (with the right sizes too)
Yer, we're doing it this Sunday, ill edit the thread name

His bro on the hornet hit a tar snake and the front slipped... I think.

yeap Hit worn out chip seal where the stones had worn down to the tar. :argh:

oh..
tar snakes are tricky bastiges...had the front and rear sliding simultaneously on many an occasion today, not a good day to be riding.
Hope he is not too sore.

Most people would realise fairly early on that that is a indication they should be adjusting how they are riding, not just doing the same thing and keeping sliding...

nah just his ego and his poor hornet, but he is all sweet
motorbyclist
25th November 2008, 01:17
lol yeah he was saying he was riding a lot slower today in the wet;)
for the record he reckons he had slowed down to about 30kph in light of the wet and slight off-camber. after hitting the apex (and possibly the white line) the front started slipping and as he tried to turn the bike kept going in a straight line
he's got a bit of a bruise on his knee from going down with the bike, but fortunately the full gear protected him quite well
brake lever is bent straight again but we're yet to decide what to do with the tank - get new stickers and bog/spray the whole thing properly, or just bog and try to feather in the new paint
motorbyclist
25th November 2008, 01:40
he's standing about where the slide started and the bikes are where he ended up
might note that shortly afterwards he lost a cylinder and then a bit later the other three went too
gave all the electrics a wiggle and whatever had been knocked loose came right again
so if you drop it and she stops running, don't panic, it's likely you knocked something loose and/or blew a fuse :)
and with some duct tape and band-aids the bike is all better!

:Offtopic:
I do adjust my riding to the conditions, I was riding veerry slowly as the roads around my house had heaavy surface flooding hence the sliding and if ya lived here would know are covered in unavoidable tarsnakes. Anticipated the slides and never got a fright, the motoguzzi in front of me had a hard time on the way back from work.

How much experience is required for this ride? I've only done about 150km on my bike and not a lot of it has been on the open road as the manual tells me not to go over 4000rpm for the first 800km which isn't all that fast.
Would it be worth coming along for me?

Excellent :) I would very much like to.
What about the running in period for my bike? Bearing in mind 4000rpm is only about 55kph in 5th gear. Is the manual just being pessimistic about this?
Slyer
29th November 2008, 22:35
You should come and let me ride your '09 :D
Seriously though, I wouldn't until you've had more practice by yourself. :)
Listen to the run-in guide, so you can get the longest life out of your bike.
Come on some rides once you've had your first service. :)

Will be L plate friendly, suitable for a first group ride (not your first ride on the road, but a first ride on the open road in a group). So if you've gotten the hang of commuting on your toy but haven't yet gone on an actual ride, here's a good chance to do so without getting into trouble.
is that 150km your total riding experience or just for this bike?
aside from the run in period, whether or not you attend is (from where i'm sitting) more an issue of your competence and confidence:scooter:
ie if you've been commuting/riding around town enough to be comfortable and competent operating your machine, you'll be fine.
if you're struggling with the clutch, can't perform an emergency brake, or are not comfortable in corners i will strongly suggest you wait for our next carpark ride. seriously.
either way this will still be experience, but whether or not it's a good one is the issue. i'd hate to see green paint scuffs along the road.:bye:
as such, don't be offended if i ask you (or anyone else at either end of the spectrum) sit this one out. it will be for the good of you and the group:yes:
if you don't want to rev your bike over 80kph, perhaps get the first service under your belt. kawasaki has undoubtedly spent many millions developing those motors over the years and know what will best keep the machine running until the end of the warranty period, by which time you will have your full;)
(of course you could just thrash it until the warranty runs out/problems occur then flick it off on trademe as "brand new never thrashed" and field off all questions by saying you're selling on behalf. use all caps for maximum effect)
OT here...
the 70kph learner limit is there for a reason - unfortunately, reality and impracticalities (for non-rural residents, read: impatience) often outweigh the reasoning behind it. imho 6 months is too long for some and too short for others.

I wanna come for a ride! Sadly, I've worked 10 hour night shifts for the last 3 nights in a row, so I'll be pretty wasted today...
I'd very much like to go on a learner cruise on the FXR. I did ride it home from Hamilton to Auckland when I bought it, but I was by myself, and sticking to 70 wasn't fun at ALL!
Oh, and I must start a thread about inaccurate speedos. I rode to work last night with my GPS stuck to my tank, and the digital speedo is more than 10kph out. when it says 60kph on the speedo the GPS says 49 or 50!!!
So I was doing closer to 60kph all the way back from Hamilton!! No wonder it took so darn long.
AND, I've booked myself in for the Restricted test in 2 weeks! Woohoo.

Sheesh, I sure felt like it. But there are lots of cops along that stretch, and I didn't want to risk it. But man the trucks sure roar past! They really pull you along too, when you're trying to go slow. The FXR wanted to go faster though. If only I'd known that 90 on the speedo is still under 80 in true speed.

The 150km is just for the bike, I've done a little bit more as I went on the confident rider course with Riderskills.

Thanks for the advice. I'll wait until the first service before going on the open road too much if it's best for the bike. There's always the next learner ride.

30th November 2008, 08:14
Wait 70kph?
Serious?
about which aspect? you're a shining example of why a learner shouldn't be doing high speed on their first day;)
do remember the harbour bridge and the whole of spaghetti junction, arguable the most confusing part of the motorway, is an 80k zone with traffic that often stops completely

now, awaiting squiggle's post up of moar info, i do believe the SMC has a subsidy for some insane number of RRRS courses.
it's a great course and covers what we have done today and more, in a lot more depth, with a nice section of grippy airfield to then go out and put it to practice - this includes emergency manuveurs and braking, and corner control. top notch course even for the experienced among us.
after the club subsidy i think it's all of $25 for the day. add $1 for club membership if you have not already :bleh:

It improves with experience. After a while you can tie yourself into a pretzel and think nothing of it.
Today was 284 km all up by my odometer, but that included two extra trips from the city to South Auckland and back. Not a long trip as they are measured.

twas a relatively short ride with frequent breaks - i did forget to mention that if you don't get off and 'unfold' every once in a while you can get quite uncomfortable
myself, i find my legs start cramping up if i go too long and too hard without a stop and a walk around. once that happens i have to stop for even longer as the pain consumes dangerous amounts of attention and restricts my movement, usually in the corners
today i could feel dehydration was setting in by the time i got home:crazy:
