View Full Version : Bike rallies - others like Cold Kiwi?

I have been thinking that I would like to go along to some 2 or 3 day events like the cold kiwi (I got my bike too late for this years, I will probably go to next years one). I wont be going to the brass monkey due to a personal policy of not ever being in the south island in June/July/August. I am considering the Magpie Madness but I don't think I will bother if the weather is going to be crappy (over 1100kms riding each way + ferry twice, not worth it for wet and dreary weekend) - I'll have to check the 7 day forecasts then make a last minute decision.
Are there any similar events in the North Island in December, January or February? I have hunted through the calendar and only found this one: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1726 which I might be keen to go to. But surely this isn't the only one in the NI this summer. I want to do a bit of camping (but no tramping) and give the digital SLR a workout - a decent motorcycle rally with lots of fun events is what appeals to me.
I didn't have much luck with a google search and a website that claimed to list motorcycle rallies for NZ seemed to list lots in the SI and pretty much none in the NI. So what rallies do you guys know of? And what sites do you know that list these things?

Can I ask the obvious - why the policy of not being in the South Island in June/July/August?

Two obvious reasons:
1. It's Farkin' Cold
2. I'm a soft bastard

You have to do at least one "Brass Monkey"

Well duh I know its cold.
I was at the Monkey in 2001. Nash took a photo of me in my kilt, and put it in Kiwirider, presuming I was a local...
I had some cool big alpine mitts that I had to get out at one point, real difficult to gear change with them on though...
Anyway, my point was going to be, it's still worth doing at least once, regardless of the cold. Those Otago roads were unlike any other roads I'd ridden.

Hmmm, 2 wheels and a motor - regardless of the location of my petrol tank I'm pretty sure it is still a motorbike.

So far I am thinking about the Magpie Madness, the BAY M C Hastings One Night Stand, the Cold Duck & the Cold Kiwi. I can ride the Otago Roads on a big SI trip I am thinking of doing next summer. But anyway guys - back to the original question: NI rallies this summer? (I am asking about rallies in the North Island this Summer not the South Island next Winter).
C'mon someone must know of something worth going to.

I'll take it back - think I'll have to take the segway to the Nelson rally tomorrow though.

Yeah, that's a sensible comparison, well done.

2 wheels and a motor thank you very much :p
Just taking the mick outta ya is all...
However, do HTFU - the south island isn't that bad, not even in winter! Although the grit can be a bit of an annoyance.

Isn't there a rally called the Sulfur City Rally or something???? (I could be wrong)
To the best of my knowledge, there are other rallies where you have to be a member of the club, gang, or invitation only and or own a Guzzi - to go to the Rattly Tappets Rally, or a HD for HOG rally...
Most of the Rallies down south is for all bikes including the HOG clubs rally and the Off the Rails Rally.

The other trouble with winter is that it isn't coming up now. I am looking for rallies to go for within the next few months. Unfortunately I found out about the one on this coming weekend only a few days ago and I can't make it to that one. I am having trouble believing that out of December, January and February there is only the Hastings club event - there must be others on surely?
Now I am thinking I had better go to the Magpie Madness Rally unless there is a severe weather warning, it is looking like that is the only one on any time soon. It'll mean taking some time off and riding about 2200kms, but what the hell - it should be pretty good, eh!

There's usually one at Wangas for the Boxing day street races.

Yeah the Sulphur City Rally is the one that I can't make, pity about that, it looks like it might be a bit of fun.
The Hawkes Bay rally: Is it this one - http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1726 or is there another one in that area?
Thanks for the silverbullet link, but it looks like the Hawkes Bay rally is the only one listed this Summer, they don't even list the Sulphur City one. With the list NighthawkNZ gave for the SI rallies you would think that there would be a few coming up in the NI. It looks like there are more in the Winter than in the Summer, which will give me something to look forward to in 6 months, but I tend to have very little work on in January and wouldn't mind going to a rally or 2 in that month. If the weather is going to be really nasty during the Magpie and I give it a miss then I could consider the Woodstock Rally, but if I go to the Magpie I probably wont be up for another SI Rally so soon. Just petrol & ferry crossings are going to cost me ~$500 and I am already spending too much money on too many things.

Cool - I have that one noted in my calendar and hopefully nothing comes up to stuff up my being able to go to that one. Good weather would be nice on that weekend too.

The last couple of years the weather has been superb, last year was stinking hot... Photo thingy's (http://www.southernrider.co.nz/album/thumbnails.php?album=45)
The weather usually starting to settle by then... but the best time is usually in the new year.

If you bought a bike then a one-marque-only doo would be open to you - Triumph up in Kaitaia next weekend for instance.

Decent toilets(flushing) plenty of grub, lots of area to "play" great bands, fireworks display etc etc. Rallies are what you make of them. Can't recall seeing any cops there this year either. Missed last years.

Cold Kiwi - good, bad or otherwise: my plan is to go next year and form my own opinion.
I hope my schedule works out better next year for the Sulphur City Rally.
Any opinions on the Cold Duck Rally? Another Hawkes Bay one, 2nd weekend in May.

The more I think about it the more I want to head down to the Magpie. I could meet a bunch of Kiwibiker fellas and felleses from the SI. Big turnout. Good weather (hopefully). Should be a blast!
I plan on being at the BAY M C Hastings One Night Stand in February too.
So that leaves December & January - January would be the best for me. I would love to go to at least one rally in the North Island then - If I can find one :crybaby: Maybe too many bikers have kids on holiday that they have to stay home to look after.
What about March & April?

Any opinions on the Cold Duck Rally? Enjoyed this years one even though it was a "bit' sodden underfoot.
