View Full Version : My new bike came a cropper today

1st November 2008, 09:38
I was just leaving for work at 5.30am this morning, got the bike out of the driveway, set it on its side stand to close the gate.........was just about to put the latch on, and I hear this CRUNCH!:argh:
Turned around and heres my lovely bike lying on the ground:eek5::crybaby::angry2:
Now I know the automatic kill switch works:doh:
So after I finished having my anger fit, my boyfriend (who jumped out of bed when he heard the crunch) helped me pick it back up, cheers Andy!:niceone: and then we surveyed the damaged.

Broken wing mirror, broken clutch lever, few scrapes/scratches along the side of the fairings/engine cover.......but worst of all, the rear seat cowl broke/cracked:weep: Oh the front left indicator also popped out, but managed to pop it back in.
I'm hoping its not too expensive too fix cos I dont really want to claim insurance for it.

First photo(taken with cellphone) is how it looked beforehand (it looked brand new:oi-grr:)

That sucks big time.
A mate did the same thing to my cruiser last week. I so feel your pain. I have spent the last week learning how to get grazes out of plastic and chrome etc..
Hope you can get it fixed cheaply. Its so gut wrenching when the bike is new too.
Did the side stand fail?

There's a dude up your way does good plastic welding and resprays - worth talking to him mibbe. I think his name is Crazefox. Send him a PM.

It's a shame you don't live in Auckland as Cycletreads do just about every wing mirror imaginable at a fraction of the cost charged by motorcycle manufacturers.

Give them a call since the shipping is only about $5 anyway.

Why not?? That's what insurance is for....with an insurance claim they'll fix every part that has even the smallest scratch on it...which can quickly add up to a couple of grand work of parts/work.
That way it's still mint for resale.

I had my bike fixed on insurance recently, and the claim didn't even affect my no claims bonus....some kind of new policy where once you've hit the maximum bonus you never lose it.

That looks painful and sad. Hopefully you have ful comp insurance cos it should be covered.
Sorry bout the bike

my friend has an 06 zx6r that fell at low speed as well, the first thing that happened was the rear cowl broke in the exact same way.

That sucks about the bike, hopefully shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

Yeah, im sure they'll love me making a claim 2 days after I take out a policy with them:mellow: Also depends on what my excess is, I dont know this yet as I havn't received the papers from the company yet.

Yeah its full comp. - got it on tick so it has to be:yes:

Damn. Looks like that might be common then. This is also another reason why I thought about investing in crash bungs:(

Side stand should have been fine. Its only just been revinned for the road. VERY slight slope - going from the footpath down to the gutter on the driveway....hardly even worth noting, and it was windy as well

Ebay is your friend.

Dollar is not so great, but if you are hunting for well priced new kit and don't want an insurance claim.:niceone:

Quick fix would be bit of plastic welding (somebody correct me here but you will probably need a new paint job because of the heat from the welding gun) or maybe even fibre glassing should do the trick.

Other than that Ebay would be your next best bet, there's heaps of stuff on there for really good prices!

ouch (pic four) gal looks pretty bad id at least inquire insurance how thin is the rear cowl????

Its unbelievable how much damage they sustain by falling over standing still. Pity you dont have crash knobs on it as it might have save fairing and casing damage. Not a nice way to start your day so heres hoping the rest of it ends up better for you.

it will need a respray after welding
as cracks need a hole drilled at the end of them to stop them tracking

Ouch - that hurts.

A lot of damage for a stand flop!

Also look at some crash sliders - they are ideal for horrible "off the stand "accidents like that - in this case the crankcase would probably be saved from scratches.

I'd get on-line and check for race replica tail sections - there will be a few available for that model and a lot cheaper than a factory replacement.

If you want an idea of parts costs, pop on to www.bikebandit.com and search for your model - they have all the bits and prices - now these are USA prices so convert to NZ$ then add 20-30% on top and that's about what your dealer will charge you here :shit:

Then purchase some beer.........

sad about yr baby.

But +1 on ebay being your friend - it will probably cost you as much as the exsess.

I think the cowl might be 5-7.5ml thick? I'm not too sure really, thats just a guesstimate. I was thinking plastic welding, and a respray to fix it. And then buy another one later on aye. Might need some green tape for it in the meantime though, instead of the blue I had to use today. Clutch lever should be easy to get though?

yeah, excess on my old bike was $750, and that was only a 125cc through State. With Vero/Golightly now, so not sure on their excesses

I don't think crash bungs would of saved the rear at all.

I dropped my CBR after moving it inside after a few too many beers ( pushing it) and the only damage was to the bar end ( which I lost later on anyway?) sounds like you had some bad luck!

:blank: my heart broke seein those pics - then again out bikes carry a striking resemblance!

I would definitely agree with the plastic weld and respray replacement fairings are painful at best. You might be really lucky and see replacement parts on trade me.

Levers, mirrors, indicators and all those sorts of bolt-on things are almost always cheaper as after market. I got a gear lever, rear + front brake lever and clutch lever for my last zxr, worked out to be 1/3 the price for Kawasaki original parts.

Anyways, good luck.

It's bummer when something like this happens. The only consolation for what it's worth is that the next scratch/ding won't feel as bad.

Yeah, ah well. I found a generic kawasaki cable clutch lever on TM though. Link here (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Parts-accessories/Performance/auction-184783320.htm)
Would this be worth a shot? I'll go see the bike shop tomorrow first though, see what they have sitting around there. And also see what they say about getting the rear cowl fixed

.....not looking forward to this, since the mechanic only just got it all fixed up:no::shit:

Anywho, toodled off down to the bike shop today to get the damage assessed. $119 for the wing mirror, $25 for the clutch lever - these are OEM genuine prices btw. Rear cowling alone was gonna cost around $400-$500 to fix.......so we decided to do an insurance job, since the excess is only gonna be $250. So i'm getting everything repaired back to the way it was before and it'll look like new again :2thumbsup
......and I get it back for the weekend too:ride:

The broken peice is getting repaired. Hopefully they do a good job of it. It was pretty straight cracks mainly so shouldnt be too hard to plastic weld them
