Just completed my Private Pilots Licence theory paper for Meteorology and it got me thinking about peoples preference for weather forecasts when planning a ride.

So what do you usually use/prefer when trying to see what the weather is up to?

I have found the CRT website quick & easier to use rather than Metservice, plus it seems to have more specific regional forecasts.

fencepost.com weather - 2 day or 12 day forecasts.....clear and easy to understand. Metservice a close second. Newspapers as well.

Head out the window on the morning..metservice if I plan going further than I can see into the horizon.

Most of the time its looks outside on the morning and maybe metservice for longer range of forecast but they are wrong most of the time so its the good head out the weather looking.

I tend to look on Met service but don't solely rely on it. If I'm going further afield then I will get a long range forecast - mainly for the windy information as HATE riding in the wind! :angry2:

Although for local rides etc I tend to just look at the window and see whats going on...

Metvuw is the one I use to plan weather critical work - a friend up north uses it on his charter fishing boat too. Nothings perfect but Metvuw tends to be pretty much on the mark when you need to know expected rainfall and wind strength and direction (mixed with a little local knowledge). :niceone:

I reckon Jim Hickey uses the head out the window method mixed with a little "it'll be fine if it doesn't rain" bollocks.

I think that METVUW's graphics are way easier to understand than the traditional isobars and satellite imagery.

I usually ring a pilot, but I can see that you're going to be of no use.

yeah - whats with the symbol that shows a cloud, with some rain, and the sun sitting on top.
That it might be cloudy, rain, sunny? Can't miss with that one can they, unless it snows.

stuff the weather, bring it on, ride it all - I can beat the weather

I don't think there's any way of telling for sure except gut instinct

Metservice would have a better strike rate if they just put that one up every day for Auckland. Describes 90% of the weather we get <_<

I mostly use metservice and metvuw.

https://www.predictweather.co.nz/#/home/ is frighteningly accurate and is worked off the phases and orbits of the moon.

Metvuw, they would tend to be the most accurate, but sometimes they get it reasonably wrong.

The met service always get it right, it's just the timing that can be wrong.

I have PPL and CPL met, I had a Synoptic reporters certificate and over the last 37 years have made over 30,000 observations..Synoptic Reports, Metars, Specis and Landing Reports (ATIS).

And what it boils down to is: Local Knowledge!

Check the weather maps and prognosis over the coming couple of days and run through the weather radar images on www.metservice.co.nz

And after all these years it's just a lottery but they get it mostly right. If in doubt, turn back. Always have GETHOMEITIS in the back of your mind and how it can get you killed.

Good luck!

Metservice, but ONLY for the satellite imagery. Visible and IR spectrum shots are the most useful.

We often ring someone who lives where we are heading to see what the weather is like - but my late mother was shocking - she'd often say the weather was crap and we would stay home and then find out the 'howling gale and driving rain' she spoke of was nothing more than a light breeze and the hint of rain in the air!

The live webcams are good too, if there is one where you are heading or nearby.

Metvuw is my first pick along with a good look at the Tasman isobars.

The only reason I look is to decide whether I take the wet weather gear or not, it affects nothing else at all.

I check them all. Met, NZCity, Weather underground and TV.
