View Full Version : Biking as a decision in life

I never started biking because anyone else.
I started riding because of me.
It was a very egotistic decision.
I did not care that my mum was scared that I would get killed.
I did not care that my then friends did not have an interest in bikes.
I was already at 16 riding alone. There was not that many where I lived who had a bike. At that age.
My bikes have never pulled females. Or perhaps I always thought they were attracted to my other attributes...
My bikes have always been a way of getting away.
At times they have meant more to me then other living beings.

I have been riding with "groups".
But even then it was about me.
I did it because of me.
That there was others around me with similar looks at life just made it easier.
Gave me reasons to disappear.

And nothing has changed.
I still do not look for other reasons then my selfish ones why to ride.
I still ride alone.
Life is different. I have a respectable job, I have responsibilities, children. They all get in the way. Some of them take priority.

But I ride when I get the need. As long as it does not affect my kids.
Even if it is a dirtbike ride on the beach in the moonlight.

There is nobody else needed or involved.

Thousands of years ago I got on the back of a mate's bike....there was a certain smell came off the engine......and I was totally hooked straight away. Now it's because I am old enough to be stupid and not care. Been riding on and off for forty years now with the odd gap but I still love it as much as ever if not more so....it's like flying two feet above the ground....and the sense of freedom speaks to my soul or maybe its that little primitive bit of hind brain that wants to be a bird...... But I do it 'cause I like it.

For thirty-nine years I put wife and kids ahead of any aspirations to own a bike. Then, when she decided she'd had enough and left and the kids were all grown up and away, I had nobody to worry about. Now I have my bike and I feel freer and happier than I ever have. (Don't tell my ex!) :whocares:

I started because I jumped on the back of a bike and found that road riding was fun/economical/fast after some off roading.

So I thought, why save my money when I'm 18y.o. Why not spend my money (defo no debt though) and have fun now?
Have as much fun as poss while I'm at school and Uni, then save once I'm earning to get a house and support a family.

So here I am, having a hell of a lot of fun too!

I started with a mini dirt bike when I was about 8. On the road at 15. Oh and driving a cage with a helmet on looks stupid. It was love right from the word go.

I did it because I didnt want the nutbar (back in the day) in charge killing me first, and figured being a pillion with a nutbar rider was not a good idea. Then the riding thing sort of stuck with me for the next 22 years.

Been hanging out for a motorcycle since I first became aware they existed.

Age 13, I'd bugger off on a Saturday and walk an hour or two into town and wheedle bike catalogues from the shops, hide them from me mum (very anti-motorcycles, she is) at the bottom of my T-shirt drawer, then sit up late at night reading them.

Made the fuckwitted mistake of hitching myself to the first hot bird who'd 'ave me and forgetting to check first whether she liked bikes. More years of pain and suffering while I sorted that shit out.

Never mind, it's all OK now. Missed out on several years of riding, but at least I've cleared away the obstacles to it.

Of course, now I just have to work out the 'not losing my licence' part.

This motorcycling business can be a bit complicated.

very lucky i was.

Too right! You cunts who were actually encouraged to ride as young 'uns often end up failing to appreciate what a wonderful gift that was.

My boy's going to have his own MX bike in a few years time (he's 5 now) and his mother won't be able to do a goddamned thing about it.

:2thumbsup

I figure a few minor injuries in the sand and mud should save him from having to join his dad in the titanium screw club later on...

Actually we were encouraged because the bus system sucked and it was the only way to get around - OK I am old and we didnt have Japanese import cars back then. After I came off under a bus and my brother crashed in the Domain my Mum decided we should get cars.

Not till after she passed away we both got bikes again. :scooter:

My oldest is riding. His mum disapproves after his hospital experience.

The other 3 young uns all ride. Youngest has aspirations to become MX WC. And who am I to stop them?

I did what I wanted. And I tell my boys to do the same. Be that biking or ballet. (I do prefer biking...)

I was put on a bike at about age 7, always had at least one ever since, The old boy was and still is mad keen on motorcycles.

Never hooked up with a lady who would have thought to stop my riding, I would have laughed heartily and poked her in the eye.

Having said that, If anyone in my life had disapproved I would have been oblivious to it.

Not me,as i said very lucky i was.Amazing how things have moved on,ive a mate with 2 boys aged 7 and 9,i was round at his place the other day as he couldnt get there 2 smoker mx bike to go,whilst in the process of getting it working i thought back to my SL125 years and couldnt believe how tiny the 2 smoker was in comparison to my first set of 2 wheels not to mention the suspenders.

I got a motorcycle because my mother said I had to - cars were too expensive...and my cousin had a Bantam he wasn't using,so she bought it for me.I paid her back the $60 at $10 a week.Of course she dropped my board by $5 a week so I could afford to.I was earning $18 a week, giving her $15...and the Bantam cost 50 cents a week to run,so I was pretty flush for money.I didn't mind,as I had thought my cousins Bantam was pretty cool...and didn't have to ask Mum if I could have it.

All my 4 kids have a bike, supplied by me,and they can ride them anytime they like. Not too keen on them going on the road though

'cause they won't let me have a tank to run around in :innocent: Started getting interested in bikes at same time as me younger brother, mum started having conniptions when she found out her two sons were going to be riding death machines ...

So I backed right off and let younger bro have the run of two wheels, I was fairly put out, but stowed it.

Years later, coast is clear ... and I've made up lost time with a vengeance! :devil2:

A lack of disposable income prompted my first bike and having disposable income prompted the current one.

A period of 10 years somewhere in between riding AG200's then DR200's around rural locations from the Tararuas to the sea and getting paid for it - priceless :)
