View Full Version : Resurrecting the Auckland Girly Coffee Rides?

Little Miss Trouble
1st November 2008, 23:03
So now the weather is finally starting to come nice again and theres a whole bunch of new girls riding I'm thinking it would be cool to arrange another GCR as originally organised by Keystone19. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=49792&highlight=GCR
My problems thus far however are that I can't off the top of my head think of a suitable destination, and my sense of direction isn't perfect (but I ain't no DD either!) So if anyone has any ideas then by all means make a suggestion.

I think the first coffee ride (or was it a chicks ride?) went up north, around the Leigh area...

only reason is that I helped marshal and guide those poor women (they need so much help at times) :shifty:

I've discovered theres good coffees to be had out at Muriwai, was out there today taking photos of my bike.

As before, the pace of this ride would be determined by the ability of any newer riders, and yes, boys may be allowed to come along IF they are are bringing a lady pillion AND can behave themselves:bleh:

Remember there are mobile espresso vans too, and if theres ten or more customers they will go a little out of their way for you when they are not busy. Try a few of them and see which one you like, and then maybe you can organise a little picnic and see if they'll attend. Be creative - a rest area near the beach, or some nice shady spot, just as long as its not a 25 minute drive for them there and back. Most mobile espresso operators are owners, so you are likely to have a quality experience, and quality coffee to boot.

Be aware though, if they suddenly get offered a big job they will likely drop you and take the big money.. Not nice I know, but they have to feed the troops etc, so ask them what time of the day where this is unlikely to happen.

HTH,
Steve

Right, any GIRLS interested in this, send me a PM, once we've got a few interested we'll start sorting out dates etc
(just not this weekend coz I'm moving house... again)

You can create a social group, and can set it that:
1) you can't see any posts unless you are in the group
2) joining the group requires approval

Want me to create it for you? :shifty:

and how the hell do you know I smell? :oi-grr:

Hmm hopefully it won't come to that, surely it can't be that offensive to the male ego to have us girls want to do our own thing occasionally? Just go do coro loop that day or something :niceone:

Anyway, look at the long term big picture here, I'm encouraging more girls to attend group rides, so eventually you may get to meet them :msn-wink:

And girls, don't worry they really aren't half as bad as they sound on here, they really do kinda smell after being in their leathers too long though

You haven't been on here long enough to perhaps remember the fuss it kicked up amongst the more "sensitive males" (no, I didn't think they existed either )

I might just do a bit of testing... no sense sending you half baked instructions, I need to make sure I can delete my testing once I am done (odd not having full control over something IT related for once )

edit: pm me if you want help, otherwise I'll let you know

Gremlin

Well... setting one up is not rocket science at all.

I've uploaded a pic of what you probably want to check/set, as your group set up (don't copy the name and descrip ).

Basically, name, description. Setting it to invite only is probably easiest, not sure on exact settings for moderated (ie, if you have to check every message posted, its going to be a pain in the arse). You can then invite people into the group, so entry is strictly controlled. Senior moderators and site admins can see the group regardless.

Don't know if you want to allow albums, messages, normally ya do (might want to post pics of those luvly coffee thing what ya call its)

Key, is the last option. No-one can see the content unless they have joined (which they can't without invite).

Easy enough... pm if you need more details, or just post here. Feel free to test it out, you can delete the group if you mess it up anyway.

Hi GSXR Trace,
This particular ride is aimed to be more of a relaxed learner friendly ride so the pace would depend on who attends and their skill level i.e. stick together and don't make the new ones feel like they're holding anyone up or being left behind.

Gremlin
6th November 2008, 23:57
Trace, the idea of the rides were that some women felt a little... mmm... daunted or perhaps not relaxed enough when riding with boys.

Some women handle it fine, others don't. So the idea was as Miss L says, to allow those that would rather not ride WITH testorone filled boys to focus on enjoying the ride.

Worst thing on any ride is someone feeling like they need to keep up with someone else... seen it lead to near accidents and accidents plenty of times.

thats cool, but ahhh, what are you doing constantly posting in the Biker Angels thread... is there something your not telling us?? :msn-wink:

I would class myself as one of those who "handle if fine" - i have grown up with the boys, so not fazed. so if its a leaner ride for the girlies, I may not make it a habit of coming, but would possibly coming every now and then to meet a few girlies!

All i can say is: girls don't let those bloody boys scare you away from it - we are just as capable, get out htere and get some practice and then go show them who is boss! haha :niceone:

yeah well, guys talk shit, and there are a few boys out there that have peanuts for brains and simply try to show off... my policy is to keep my lines, get between a couple of guys that seem sensible, ride my own ride, and if anyone comes up stupidly fast behind me (or gets any stupid ideas of pulling wheelies beside me as they did a little while ago) i hang left and let them go ahead and do their thing. my experience is that in the large bunch of guys out there riding, most of them try to act cool around their mates, but actually are nice guys, and only a few of them ride like maniacs - most want to keep their license and are aware of the cops on the roads :Police:
But that may just be a little bit of innocence and fact that i give people the benefit of the doubt (or that haven't gone for enough motorbike rides with enough guys yet (i re-wrote that after having saying "haven't riden with enough guys yet" to prevent any silly little boys reading this getting the wrong idea:doh:))

its good of you to help out the girls... but clearly you have an ulterior motive

Edit: was edited as was picked up for a spelling error

i can vouch for Gremlin's sincere interest, he helped me organise the original GCR... infact, we had a lovely bunch of "boys in leather" as our official pointers for the ride.. so us girls got to ride and the boys did all the work!
so his advice is good and when i organised it, very welcome :)

the first ride we organised went up towards leigh... the second was shorter and went to muriwai...... let me know if you want some help organising another girly coffee ride... i can dig the original organisers/helpers out of the woodwork.
cheers

There weren't any problems with uninvited boys last time so no need to hide the details. Muriwai went well, if a little bit of a boring road except for the last couple of k.

Girlie coffee rides are a marvellous idea - although I haven't managed to make it along to one yet! My bike is under repair at the moment, but I would love to see these rides as a regular thing, so I could come along as often as I like.

For example, there could be one on the first Sunday of every month, or some such thing.

Good destinations for newbies:
- Muriwai
- Shelly Beach
- Clevedon
- Puhoi (lots of smelly boys at the end though!)
- Leigh/Sandspit/Matakana area

Traffic is likely to be a bit of an issue wherever you go at this time of year, and those pesky tourists are everywhere, but let's not let that put us off our riding!

7 Feb sounds good to me. It's the day after Waitangi Day, so there might be a bit of holiday traffic but hopefully most people will have left town on the Friday & come back on the Sunday. That just leaves us the usual summer day-trippers to contend with.

BUMPITY BUMP!

Just a reminder this ride is tomorrow! And it turns out I can make it (I thought I'd be away for the weekend but I'm not). Yay for me!

Here are the details for anyone who missed them:

Date: Saturday 7 Feb
Time: Meet 9:30am, ride starts 10:00am
Meeting place: Shell Westgate (turn left at the end of the North-Western motorway, the station is just before the roundabout.)
Destination: Matakana (Dragonfly Cafe, 3 mins out of Warkworth towards Matakana)
Route: Old North Road --> Peak Road --> SH16 --> West Coast Road --> Woodcocks Road
Alternative Route: If anyone on the day prefers to take another route (eg if you would rather stick to the main road all the way) we can accommodate that, and will make sure newbies have at least one more experienced rider to accompany them. There will be no pressure to go past your limits.

Who can come on the ride: By general consensus, this is primarily a ride for the girls. Less experienced riders are welcome. Boys may attend on condition they:
a) are accompanied by a girl or
b) are prepared to ride like a girl for the duration of the ride (whatever that means) AND
c) stick to the purpose of the ride - learner-friendly, no pressure, no showing off.

Oh, and any boys attending will be expected to buy the coffee. :2thumbsup

Oh, and any boys attending will be expected to buy the coffee. :2thumbsup

Can we make them wear skirts also?

I wish I could wear a skirt on the bike - this hot weather is killing me in all the gear! I think we may have to settle for making the boys wear lippy.

Cool map! Yes, I believe that's the route that has been proposed. There are some nice roads in that lot, as long as you don't get caught behind a convoy of caravans or horse floats. ;)

Anyone who's not familiar with the route doesn't need to worry - we will make sure we don't lose anyone.

Thanks for the ride, everyone. There were five of us girls :shifty: along for the ride and the traffic and road conditions were excellent for us.

I felt pretty sorry for everyone heading north on SH1 though. Heading south after the ride we went past queues for miles heading the other way.

Great ride thanks Klingon and Miss.L for organising it.

Old North Road and Peak Road seemed to be in great condition and not a lot of traffic. Got home though and thought maybe I should have gone to Cape Reinga after all

MadDuck, I know what you mean, I could have quite easily headed north too, actually there are still quite a few daylight hours left...

Sounds like I missed a great ride, I hope to make the next one :)

Very few bikers here in Perth are ATGATT.
