oook whats the best way to start

my credit rating sux... i found that out when i got knocked back for credit on a tv 7 years ago
my only bad debts have been $260-odd that i owed to a power company which doesnt exist anymore ... this was from a genuine dispute but they sold up & moved out of NZ before it was resolved & the debt got sold to Baycorp

i had to sell my house in a hurry after a marriage breakup made me miss a mortgage payment... i sold the house before the bank did but i owed them $270 for like 3 mths ... it was paid before it went to any sort of collection though ( cheers BNZ)

thats about it ... since then, i have not borrowed any money for anything & have always had my phone & power, internet etc in credit..... my only debts are a student loan & a student overdraft, unfortunately im no longer a student so i pay interest on the overdraft :(

anyway, i might need to borrow some money soon....probably from my bank
will they care about my credit rating? & if they do, how do i go about getting it rechecked? Can i show them my phone/power bill situation as proof that im good to go now?
or what? has anyone on here ever done this?
seriously need some advice on this one

Go pay Veda Advantage the few bucks they ask and get them to send you a copy of your cedit report. You may be in a tizz over nothing.

http://www.mycreditfile.co.nz/home/home_default.aspx

You will know how you stand. defaults typically "drop off" after 5 - 7 years anyways.

Hope this helps.

Baycorp (now Veda Advantage) keep debts registered for 6 years so if you are outside that amount of time it wont register.

When assessing people for credit I do not consider power, phone , water or internet as they are considered "essentials" and most people will find a way to pay them no matter what other debts they may have.

Sorry not much help but the banks and credit agencies are really tightening up in the current financial climate.

I have a friend in the Credit control game that informs me they can often stay on the books for quite a while longer than that. Veda Adv is obliged to keep them on the books for 6 years, but they're not obliged to remove them AFTER 6 years.

I understand it's a good idea to manually enforce the removal of old items...

Free.

Everyone should do this, just to see what big-brother corporations have gathered on you.

Or who is looking at your file with out your authority!

I get a yearly free check up! A couple of years ago I found an enquiry on my file by Vodafone. Always had a company phone, never requested credit from Vodafone. When I questioned it and in writing, I found out it was someone I know who worked there checking me out!
