Defensive Course

HI

I am on my restricted license at the moment and am trying to cut down my time from 18 months to 12 months by taking a defensive course....

is it true that i should take one course betwee 6 months and 12 months of the 18 month period..???

and what is the best place to take this course in the Auckland Region.... ?

And not to sound like a learner ( :)) but what is involved in this course... like do i need to ride while someone follow me, or is it just a question n answer type course...?

"Riders under 25 years of age
Riders who successfully pass their practical riding test will be granted a restricted licence. You will be required to hold your restricted licence for a minimum period of 18 months. This 18 month minimum period can be reduced to 12 months upon the successful completion of an approved course teaching advanced riding skills provided the course is undertaken after you have held your restricted licence for at least six months.


Riders aged 25 or over
Riders who successfully pass their practical riding test will be granted a restricted driver licence. You will be required to hold your restricted licence for a minimum period of six months. This six month minimum period can be reduced to three months upon the successful completion of an approved course teaching advanced driver skills."

Check out Passrite in Auckland: http://www.passrite.co.nz/cyclesfull.htm although I've just noticed that they require you to hold a full car licence for at least 2 years as a "course requirement".

There's a top Motorcycle training place in Hamilton, but I'm buggered if I can think of the name or find it using the Kiwibiker Search function - it has definitely been mentioned though.

Hi ya I did a course with Hamilton motorcycle school to cut my restricted down to 2 weeks, i am pretty sure it is still running. He runs a few course's which in theory you could get a full licence in 5 weeks from scratch. The course is easy and you learn a few good habbits to. His contact details r in the thread above.

Is that the one out on that old tennis court out in franklin or something? the guy has a bandit? I think I did my basic handling skills there a few years back

Yep that's the one. There was a mid week night class for a couple of hours on the course as well, but worth the trip down to save months of your time.

Hi so if i do a course with them, i can basically get my license even quicker..??

im just 22 and my 12 month of restrcited license finish around 20 th March 2005... so can i get my license then if i do this course at hamilton motorcycle school..?

hi if you do the course you will have your licence soon as you finish. When I did it they were just starting it out as it was the only one in the country. It is a cool course if you want to get your licence quick, best to talk to the guy to see if he is still running the course.

I was told by the trainer at Ride Rite, here in Christchurch, when I did my CBTA learners to restricted course that I could do the resticted to full CBTA course in 9 months!

They will contact me before then so I can do the course before the 9 months and get my full licence in the shortest possible time.

CBTA course is the key. Not all institutions can offer it. It is quite a bit extra, but if you're over 25 then there is no limit to how fast you can get a full licence from scratch. If you're under 25, it takes your learners period from 6 to 3 months, and your restricted from 18 to 9 months (or from 12 to 9 months if you were planning on doing the defensive course).

I personally think the CBTA course is great. Not only for the obvious benefit of gaining a licence faster, but from the theory you get taught with it. I think it's most beneficial if you're under 25, since you get a good deal of experience as well as the theory. I'm a little worried about the people who go from nothing to full in a few weeks :confused: and can go buy a 1000cc sports bike
