SOHC 2.5 V6 engine (6A1).
You go to take off and if coughs, farts and wheezes for a while and remains generally retarded until about 2500-3000rpm. What’s wrong with it (other than being a cage, and a Mitsubishi)?

If you are asking here then you obviously don't have the necessary equipment to do a diagnosis....and not many here will either.Do the basics - plugs, leads, air and fuel filter....clean all connections. If that fails get the MUT on to it - at your Mitsi dealer.

Is it GDI? (Gasoline Direct Injection)? I've heard that the injectors go to shit after quite a few km's and needs them replaced. A mate's Legnum ran like you described till injectors were diagnosed, but that is GDI specific problem, not 'normal' injectors.

Could be anything, Throttle control sensor , throttle position sensor, Air flow metre ........
Save the guess work and go to a Mitsi dealer or anyone with a Snap On tester to get a code from it and then address the issue from there.
PS; is there an engine / trouble lamp illuminated on the dash at all ???

PPS; yip ... its a clear case of Mitsi shit rearing its ugly head im afraid, shoot it and save the planet and ya wallet contents.

it will be good temporary fix

Pleased to see I am not the only one who thinks this way.
Bling to Jim for the first correct answer.

Well I find that an interesting experience.
I initially suspect air flow meter.
I download the workshop manual, but am unable to test the airflow meter as I have no special harness, perhaps I could have bodgied something up, but figure I shall test everything else that I can first.
Test the air temperature sensor, test and adjust TPS and various other elements. Come to test the distributor. Access is shit and I don’t have adaptor for the loom so I can’t be certain I am testing it accurately. Best leave it to the professionals, they’re smarter than me at this shit.

So take it to the professionals, a Shitsubishi dealer, they’ll have all the special tools – or will they?
They phone back – it’s the air flow meter, that’ll be $595.00. Damn I say, but want it fixed so ok, go ahead.
Get a call back – they replaced the Air flow meter and the problem still exists, never mind they have tracked it down to the distributor – they think, so the car is not ready, but they’re working on it.
Turns out a coil has gone gaga, therefore it needs a new distributor.

The only reason I failed at these tasks was for want of the correct gear.
So what did I get for $88.00 an hour that was any better than the service I provide for free?

03 onwards Mitsubishi's in general are ok from my experiance, im glad we've dumped the GDI setup. They now are settling on mivec / turbo engines.

There is a Mitsubishi ecu scan that you could download http://mmcdlogger.sourceforge.net/ just need to make a cable. Should work for your model as i made one years ago for my 94 import mirage for datalogging etc.
