That is exactly what has happened everywhere that the speed limit has been dropped. And in those places that have raised the speed limits the accident rate has dropped.

That's just bloody laughable!

How do they honestly expect people to travel at that speed all the time? Not only would accidents going up but so would road rage. I know living in the country just travelling to work would take me way longer. Screw that!

My god!! how stupid, my road rage would go into over drive along with everyone elses. Its bad enough in the 80km zones with the nanas doing 60km.Well, i spose it would be ok if we were all little nanas in our town cars that are too fricken big for us.

Who the hell comes up with this shit....

From the article:

"Another feature of Sweden's road safety policy was the proliferation of speed cameras. There are 1000 fixed cameras and police have 25 mobile units that are placed in plain sight to discourage flouting of speed limits."

Unlike the Swedes, the French destroy speed cameras by :2guns: shooting them!

This might be the only time the likes of Headbanger  has admiration for the French.

I thought this was an April fool's joke but I've just checked today's date... And the media publish this drivel too. If we don't speak up in public, like make submissions when we have the opportunity, it's much easier for stupid ideas to become law.

I like the logic. Aim for a zero road toll by dropping the limit to 70.

If that doesn't work ! Drop it to 50!

and so on, and so on......

I said on another site on the same article a couple of weeks ago... my bike would over heat just trying to get to Palmerston... It seriously hates that speed... I would quickly get bored, and probably have an off just because I lost concentration

70kph is even slower than what it use to before the days of 100kph... it use to be 80kph... and it I remember it use to be a whole day just to get to ChCh from Dunedin. fuck that...

It gets better - looks like the English have copied the French:

A secretive group is dedicated to ripping down, blowing up and even shooting speed cameras. Up and down the UK, the tools used to keep roads safe are being ripped down, blown up and even shot apart as part of a campaign orchestrated by a gang of Web-surfing outlaws. They threaten to become the most popular gang of criminals since Robin Hood and his Merry Men stalked the countryside. Read the Observer article here. Me too, but those insidious tossers move into any place left behind by common sense - and common sense has been on a long vacation in recent times.

People have become too afraid to push back against this crap (more commonly known as the 'silent majority') and unfortunately NZ is fertile ground right now for PC BS.

It's not that bad, and more people die each year from nut cancer, smoking-related illnesses, their head exploding spontaneously from information overload, or blood loss from their knobs falling off unexpectedly.

If we don't speak up in public, like make submissions when we have the opportunity, it's much easier for stupid ideas to become law.No no no, you have completely the wrong idea. You should understand that the sumbission process is designed by them to achieve their goals. The best thing to do with the sumbission process is to completely boycott it so that it fails, and when they implement their stupid plan then fuck them up some other way so they can never succeed. Maybe you could send them a little note to say you will not take part, but they should expect a full-on direct attack once they have put their conclusion in place.

Making the roads safer is the wrong move.

The biggest problem the planet faces is human over-population. Given NZ's reputation as a "world leader in social reform", here is another chance to reinforce that reputation and set the world yet another example.....
Instead of striving to lower the road toll, we should be trying to maximise it. That way, less people. So less health costs, education costs etc etc the list goes on. Saves MONEY!
To that end: Make the minimum speed 150km/hr on open roads and 80km/hr in town. NO maximum speed. DO NOT maintain the roads so that they get more and more dangerous as they fall to bits. No minimum driving age. No licence required to drive and all vehicles to be grossly overpowered. Do away with WOF's. No cops, no lights no roundabouts or any other method of traffic control. NO ambulance services to smashes either. In anyone is injured, just put 'em out of their misery - with a shotgun should do it....
Any other bright ideas?

I rekon what's needed is alternating speed zones, every little while have a nice piece of decent motorway with a higher limit like 140 so that people can have a blat and wake up, then go back to the more passive speeds.

Remove the nanna state control on our roads. Get rid of speed cameras, or set them to a higher tolerance. Penalise much harder for reckless/dangerous/careless, and jail for 20yrs+ if you kill someone on the road.

I think personal responsibility needs to be encouraged a lot more than 'speed kills'. How about instead of 'slow down', a 'be more cautious' campaign.

Better road design would help to. Like maybe designing roads to the known habits of drivers, instead of slowing everything down which will just lead to more dangerous passing maneuvers - Was good to see a number of new 'slow vehicle lanes' on the way out to Piha last weekend.

That's what I would do, remove speed limits from open roads, leave it up to the driver/rider to decide what speed is safe.
Punishments should be dealt for endangering other people.

So all the people who make this statement on KB (and I've seen it quite a few times) are talking through their arses? Or is there some info out there that I could look at?

Same in the middle east when they reduced speed enforcement. If you get caught speeding there are no demerits and the fine simply gets added to the cost of your next rego - easy.

However, in Victoria when they increased speed enforcement, the accident rate dropped:

add 5 - 10 years if you injure someone on the road. time would change depending on seriousness of injuries [broken bone 5 years, traction for x amount of time, 10 years.

your right that personal reposibility needs to be looked at. so does accepting the blame when it is your fault and none of this "i didnt see you cos you were speeding" bullshit.

Rider/driver training is a better idea. Intensive training and repeat training courses at say 5 year intervals.

Plus restricting cars to the younger ones - WTF a 15 year old is legally allowed to get behind the wheel of a Skyline, HSV or similar is beyond me. :buggerd:

well i reckon all vehicles should be governed to 50 kph.no fast vehicles at all to be imported . including gov"t ministers bmws .then we would all be really safe. really dont know why our caring governments let fast cars and bikes in anyway .well i guess they just need our money . gives the police something to do. i reckon everyone who gets a ticket should not pay the automatic fine. always plead not guilty and take it to court .imagine the nz courts trying to cope .it would be years before the cases were called .many of the policemen would have left anyway so no evidence could be called . the police get off really easy at the moment as most folk pay the standard fine . if speed was so dangerous a motorist should be stopped immediately he was clocked .not much point in getting a fine in the mail to the owner of the vehicle 2 weeks later. the driver may well have been drunk. disqualified or even not had a licence and his speed may well have caused an accident .. take it from me speed cameras are a great way for the governments to make money and really dont contribute to road safety at all . i worry about what they will think of next .wont be long before we will all be cringing at 30kph for sure . cheers jase the ace ..

its such a fuckin ridiculous notion, driver ed is key, so many cats on the road have got no idea at all of what they are doing, its mind blowing.

iv had this argument with people over and over and over, speed doesnt kill people, hell you can fall over and break your arm or your neck, BUT of course speed wll amplify the damage in a crash, BUT 99% of people wouldnt crash if they formulated a better opinion on the surface they are driving on and exercised better judgement around other motorists..

i could write a novel about this but then im sure alot of you are thinking the same thing eh..

Claes Tingvall is the fanatic instigator of all the draconian traffic law in Victoria and NZ and some other anglo countries.
(The latin countries have more sense-eg the Italians raised the federal speed limit to 150 for safety reasons)
In our part of the world Victoria are the high priests of his evil cult and NZTA are the twisted altar boys waiting for some perverted attention.
