some advice please,

I have a standard exhaust on my CR250 and repacked the muffler 3-4months ago but was noise tested at thundercross last weekend @ 98 db and that was NOT full throttle.

Are some packing material better than others, I was just given sheets of packing over the counter at cycletreads, will a better brand quieten it down, just a little.... Cheers

At 3-4 months ago the packing in a CR250 is probably oil soaked or carboned up and now probably not very effective.

Use Silent Sport packing mate if someone here can tell you where to get it! I still have some left from my Karting days so haven't bought it in a few years. They reckon not to jamb it in to tight either, just wrap a nice generous matt around the stinger pipe and push it into the can. But its good stuff. Lasts for ages, doesn't burn or blow out, lighter than stock packing.

Maybe someine here can put you onto a supplier in NZ or do a google?
I can post a pic if you want to identify it.

Make sure all those perforated holes are clean. Oxy-Acetelene works good to burn all that oil and carbon off.

Not normally too hard. Sometimes requires re-riveting end caps. What muffler has your WR got on it? Standard one wouldn't be 104db surely?

Rito after a bit of research i found that the best thing to do is go down to your local bike shop and buy some packing, the packing i got kinda looks like nana's knitting wool (but im sure its more technical than that) and its only $30

gonna drill out the rivets closest to the front, then slide the can off, making sure all the old packing is out and clean up the baffle with a wire brush or similar

then start what looks to be a very long process of goin round and round with this wool until the can will just fit back on, then use some sort of tape to hold the wool tight while i slide the can back on.

use high temp silicone around where the can is joint, then whack some new rivets in and job done.

hope its that smiple (correct me if i am about to make any mistakes before tonight please)

will post back tomorrow and find out if i have done it right

Yeah too much of it goes on in here, really takes the enjoyment out of the forums.
There's a lot of tag teaming going on in here as well. Perhaps I'm the only one that's noticed but its just as annoying to me.

Have noticed in just about every post oh yeh look at me i have a shop online oohoh i can sell you some of that. people generally post if they want to know where to buy somthing. As for me sticking it in my face every time i turn around just makes me shop elsewhere.

rito glad to report back that repacking your muffler is so easy.
it would have been all back together in about half an hour but i forgot to get some stainless rivets yesterday.

i now understand why it was so fecken loud too, it only had one small sheet like packing left in it, which had either shrunk or disentegrated cos it was half the length of the muffler and only about 5mm thick and thats it!

should fly throught scruitineering now, fingers crossed tho cos i havent started it yet. but it must be better

I used the silent sport packing and it worked really good. Didn't sound that quiet at first but after one ride it settled down.

whats tag teaming?

Im new here today, but I think it's when a shop post something about a product then another forum member talks about it,

oh right, its probably regarding th mr motorcycles supporters in this forum then..

and yea there is a lot of it, but at the end of the day im not getting paid to say anything about anyone, and if a shop or dealer gives me good service and or pricing, ill point others in the same direction. its fairly uncommon for me to find a motorcycle shop that isnt shit in my opinion for one reason or another.

eg recent issue of a $95 radiator cap, which turned out to be a $16 radiator cap somewhere else.

Hey welcome Assasin you got it pretty much. And no I don't have any issues with Mr Motorcycles and don't regard them as tag teaming. Scott has had lots of valuable input to the forums as far as I'm concerned.

 Ye seems so, but after reading old post's the ones that criticise other people for doing it do it themselves, KB is great can't believe I haven’t been here before. :bash:

id agree there, theres also a difference between

1: "hey have you tried this or that and if all else fails i sell this"
and
2: "o hai guys, i see this is a muffler topic. buy the new range of x muffler from my shop www.shop.com"

im also not saying that mxparts should fuck off or anything, but something more productive than just blatant pimping of your shop would be good. imagine if every bike shop got on here and every time someone asked about something there was an ad for each shop. it would make kb not worth visiting, it would be less interesting than the yellow pages.

forums are about sharing eachothers experience, advise or knowledge, finding out the answers to questions and learning from other people's mistakes

I agree, But if they have a green username doesn’t that mean they can advertise?

There is a place for advertising specially for shops http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=41 but its just annoying jumping into the threads in the off road section and plugging your store through several threads at a time.
If someone is looking for something and asks and you say, "yeah I have that give me a call" no probs in my mind (unless your thick as theives with the original poster, thats tag teaming).
