I have had nothing but a great run with my GT250R. Has not missed a beat either. If it was not for the simple fact that I want to do some long distance two up touring riding in the future, I would be keeping my GT250R as my commuting bike. But alas can't afford to run two bikes and a cage(for when I'm forced to drive)......So in a few months it will be bye to a really great first bike....:)

They are good bikes.....mine has served me well, 30,000 k's and counting. Once you've got a decent set of tyres on them as well as a decent chain and sprocket set, you're away laughing.

Similar story to my own except I had my full for awhile years ago, had to get it again after change of licenses I no longer had the motorcycle class argued the point with the AA got no where so rode around for awhile without one :devil2: So in otherwords I've owned quite a few bikes before owning the Hyo.
My wife rides a GT250 and I ride the GV250 every day. I like both bikes and despite the Hyo bashing on KB that would suggest otherwise they haven't had any real issues only thing so far is a new clutch cable which is pretty standard.
I got rid of the stock tyres on GT as we use both bikes in all weather (daily commute) so didnt want the Mrs to ride a second winter with the stocks. Still riding mostly stock on the GV (using sintered pads instead of OEM) although the chain is okay I'm thinking a different one would be good in another 2000 K's.

I was on the 1000k'er and there was an older rider with a 250 Aquilla. I dont know if there's much tuning difference from the GT. However, I read in a lot of posts that the Hyo's are underpowered etc. Well 1000k would show that up, and let me say that Hyo did remarkably well. Ok the group(s) he rode with were 100-120kmh riders, but most were 600cc plus machines. He in no way got left behind through traffic. As per usual 'peak power' has no relation to 'real world riding' and that Hyo was plenty good enough for that purpose.

Well, I've done it :2thumbsup - 1800km round the south island on my GT250R - what an awesome machine. I'll post a longer trip update but suffice to say I am very impressed with the 'Red Machine'. I have used my bike mainly for commuting and the odd KB blat. The SI trip was a real test of the bike (and rider). Open road touring was a blast and the GT250R handled it with ease (including additional kg's coz of tank-pack and back-pack). Back at work today, I am wearing the BIGGEST grin! Cheers DJ

Yeah thank god, Some ho bags who like their machines and not scared to admit to it. I've got a 2006 Gt250, and love it, I tried loads of bikes before settling on the Hyosung. It was the only bike that felt right. Right size, right power delivery (V2), Only complaint is the brakes, but get some none stock and your laughing. :whistle:

Gotta love the South Is, eh!
I got my 250R in Auck and rode it down to Invervegas, thru Opunake, SH45. It was awesome, so much fun for not a lot of gas. ;) Only times I wasn't having so much merriment was in the wet here and there. I just can't feel confident on the Shinkos. I want to, but I can't. I feel like I'm riding on butter, and I'd rather keep the black bits on the road...
What's everyone else riding on? Stock tyres or something new?

Shinkos get lots of flack here on KB but some of the flak is undeserved. They are cheap and last a long time. I put over 10,000km on my Comet with Shinkos, including some terrible conditions - heavy rain, strong winds, in the twisties (Rimutakas), and never have had problems with the Shinkos. I think they are excellent value for money. If you want to race like hell and don't mind spending more $$ on tyres, go for a brand with more street credibility such as the ones in the list below. I recall some KB'ers recommending Bridgestone BT's on 250's, Hyo's included. I have Pirelli Diablos on my VStrom and of course its better on the twisties but its a different bike altogether.
Top rated tyres, June 08 issue of BIKE magazine:
1 Dunlop Roadsmart 3TC
2 Pirelli Diablo Strada
3 Metzeller Roadtec Z6
4 Michelin Pilot Road 2CT
5= Avon Storm ST
5= Bridgestone BT-021
7 Maxxis Supermaxx m6029
8 Continental Road Attacks

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if I could do with a bit more practice... ;) :innocent:
I guess it just always feels like it wants to leave me and find its own path in life... Starting with the rear... Maybe it wants a holiday in Bermuda...

My bike is still riding around on Shinko's I might see if I can wear em out before next winter, but otherwise they will stay on the bike... as I can live with them.
In saying that, they are crap, particular with wet metal joins on a bridge, cat's eyes (basically anything a little slippery they seem to slip way more than a decent tyre). Normal seal thats got a bit of grit to it they are fine, including on a bit of loose shingle.
The wifes Comet has been transformed in stopping power with dunlops instead of the shinkos she was riding on.

Ive had my GT250r for a year now... 17,000km on it and due for a service. Didnt attend to the chain quick enough and it popped off and ate out the rear hub. All replaced - my own fault for not adjusting it or getting it serviced quicker.
I love my Hyo, and for all the new GT250R riders out there - dont mess around, and if you have a bit of spare cash, replace brake pads ($80), chain ($80) and clutch cable ($69) with aftermarket ones - even before they are spent. Oh, and the Shinkos are OK in summer. But put on a set of Sport Demons ($400) and wow, WOW.
Just my advice for those with low K Hyos.

Mine's done about 36 now, still purrs along like a dream.
The addition of a packrack helps hugely as well as it is a good little touring bike. Sure, it's slow when passing cars and your arse gets sore after a few hundred k's, but it's reliable (well mine is), economical, looks good and cars who think you are on a far bigger bike than you are, are very quick to get out of your way. :)
