View Full Version : What is it about roundabouts?

That everytime someone stops and gives way to me now, I feel compelled to give a little wave of thanks, because it happens so seldom! On my way home just now, turning right through the roundabout on Glenfield road, this young lady going straight through, from the opposite direction decided she wasn't even going to slow down, let alone stop for me. I was on the horn as I approached her drivers side door and we looked each other right in the eyes, the look of indifference on her face was incredible. She just didn't care !!
You've just got to expect everytime you enter a roundabout aye.... otherwise you're screwed man.
Thanks..... posting it helps. I feel better now.

Weird... I've never had someone fail to give way at a roundabout!
So she just barrelled on straight through the roundabout without slowing down and checking to her right? And you were definitely indicating to the right?
Bitch!

life is about wanting to live..so yup even if its your right...it some times pays to be more aware of living than not...and at one stage of life..i think we will all forget to give right of way to another...some will learn a very hard lesson, and some will just be lucky...will it change ...nope as its a choice and its theirs

yeah get that all the time, do your best to give people lots of room.
Blows my mind when they give you that "meh" look like they really don't care that you could have eaten them with your front calipers... (and got all bent in the process)

Royal Oak roundabout. Jesus Christ. I very rarely go through there any more (up Pah Rd side instead), but -- and this is no exaggeration whatsoever -- in the last four times I've been through there, I've had somebody fail to give way every time. That's four out of four.

Ouch! I head through that roundabout a few times each week and haven't had any problems ever. Must be lucky or something.

I had an oops in Wellington where a woman decided to do a lane change as I was passing and she almost took me out. When she became aware of what had happened she laughed.
I'm not sure whether amusement or indifference would piss me off more? I guess as long as I'm still upright it isn't *that* important in the overall scheme of things, but that was not my reaction at the time...
Guess I'm lucky she was such a good driver, just like the rest of them:whistle:

and the cagers ignore you on every one, had a few close calls on the way to work in the morning, certainly gets me breathing heavy for the morning!!

I find it very interesting how some people always encounter the "non-give wayers" and some people never have a problem with them. Personally, I approach every roundabout VERY cautiously, and once on it stay at a constant but safe speed. Maybe its because of my relatively cautious appraoch that encourages people to whip through ahead!? thinking "I can get through here ahead of this joker"

Yeah, I wave an acknowlegement to cars that notice me. I'll do it on the open road too, to cars waiting at the end of driveways, and cars that give plenty of Indicator time.
Sure its a war out there, but credit where credits due, and if they don't feel quite so 'hated' maybe it'll encourage them to be vigilant.
...and they tell 2x friends...and they tell 2x friends...and so on, and...

Which direction? I always come downhill through there going straight, coming down from One Tree Hill. Numpty faildrivers come from far left corner.
Roundabouts are bastards too when stuff like that happens, as it's difficult to brake to stop in time unless you're going straight, and there's not necessarily many places to swerve to avoid them, at least without looking over your shoulder first.

i get a mix at the RaB's here. mainly its incorrect indication by the cagers that does it. ive started to go a few times only to have the indicator flicked on well after it should have been. like, going all the way around, but only indicating AFTER theyve passed the exit everyone expected them to take.
my main rule is make sure its clear, then get the fuck out of the way asap without being an idiot about it. funnily enough, i have an easier time on the 2 lane 'bouts down by welly than the single laners here.

I only use my Stebel to make people on cellphones jump while I'm level with their window.
I've made it a personal rule that if I have to tootle melodiously I failed to read the situation well enough. I haven't used my horn in anger for ages and I haven't had any near misses for ages either (touch metaphorical wood - oo err). It just doesn't upset me if I have to surrender my right of way. That way I remain calm and get to enjoy my bike tomorrow.
Ride with this on your face: http://imperativesoul.com/?p=35
I really wise man told me that one.
Works beautifully for getting into the "Zone" too.

Try putting your headlights on fullbeam, belt up to the roundabout, indicate, and chop down a couple of gears and make a hell of a noise, weave around like a demented idiot, hang off it motogp styles, and swing hard into the corner. NOW watch them pull out in front of you! I do not think so!

Oh yip, I usually am coming from your sharp left or right and going straight.
It is a pretty messy roundabout most of the time for sure! But luckily noone's pulled out in front of me as of yet.

Works for me. I don't back it in tho.

I don't have this problem of them not giving way.
I remember the time once I wasn't paying enough attention and didn't give way in the cage though.. It was end of the motorway and the only time you go that way around is when you are doing a u-turn to go the whole 4-5k's back the other way. Should have been prepared for it still even though I'd never seen it happen.
I have the most trouble at double-lane roundabouts of people trying to push me out of my lane...

Just a little round about question, is it bad to slip past the side of cars when going through roundabouts? like through the inside?

You'll get in trouble with the cops if they see you I believe.
you should be passing on the outside.

I have the most trouble at double-lane roundabouts of people trying to push me out of my lane...Ride up the middle of the lane like you own it, unless there is a car in the way, then ride around them like you own it. :wari:
Just a little round about question, is it bad to slip past the side of cars when going through roundabouts? like through the inside?Yes you can do this. Pass on the left ONLY if you are turning left, or else pass on the right. If they have their turn-signal on, don't pass on the same same side as the indicator coz they might run over you.

I dunno if avoiding it is the best option... Why not head for it anytime you're near and build your confidence with messy roundabouts and with riding assertively? Otherwise your nerves will be on edge every time you encounter these types of roundabouts!

Define "inside".
I think your definition and mine might vary (i hope) cause I define 'inside' as 'between the car and the roundabout'.
In which case its suicide.
