Police motorcyclist injured by falling tree
2:53PM Tuesday Nov 11, 2008

A scenic ride from Franz Josef Glacier to Nelson for a party of motorcycle police turned bad yesterday when a tree suddenly slumped down a cliff and across the road, taking out the lead rider.

The four officers were returning to the Wellington Police College after helping with the Tour of Southland cycle race at the weekend when the small landslip struck, just north of Punakaiki on the West Coast.

"We were riding along enjoying the trip and a large tree just fell down directly on to the front rider," Sergeant Wayne Christie, of Wellington, said.

"He was lucky it hit the front of the bike. Less than a split second later and it would have been fatal."

The accident happened on a hilly section of State Highway 6, 5km north of Punakaiki, about 12.30pm.

The injured officer was treated for deep lacerations. He was flown to Grey Base Hospital by the Solid Energy Rescue Helicopter an hour later.

The Runanga Volunteer Fire Brigade attended, along with the Greymouth police and St John paramedics.

"We're really thankful to a passing tourist, a fire paramedic who assisted us," Mr Christie said.

The tree was brought down after heavy overnight rain, although the rain had stopped and the road was starting to dry out when the accident happened.

The road was blocked for about an hour until it was moved and the road swept of dirt and debris.

Maybe though, the officers awareness and preparedness turned that potentially fatal accident into just a serious injury one.

The reality is that weird shit happens very, very rarely. Most people fall off because they catch themselves out. Another person's bad luck with a UFO-tree isn't permission to give up on being an alert responsible motorcyclist.

Fark ! are they trained to look up as well ? :dodge: Think this was an unavoidable one. Just hit the spot like the dude that spins that wheel at intersections. Is he going to be prosecuted ? My thinking a victimless accident. But nowdays cos of the cost to the infrastructure. Ambo, hosp ,emergency control and support at the scene. A cause has to be found, so someone can be accountable for the cost, the computer then can generate the account.

I bet you the authorities are looking at who is accountable for the costs in this situation.;)

As well they should. The roading authority responsible for the particular road should have been onto assessing likely dangers posed by trees etc and dealt with them.
Same crap happened to a rider on the Napier/Taupo rd a few years back. He spent some 3 years in a vegetative state until he died recently. Transit had been told about the problem tree and ignored the advice to remove it. I do not know whether they ever faced the music over that. But they should have.

Next you will want them to be accountable for corners.

The system can't be held accountable for the extra risk of riding a bike.

If you want to ride a bike you have to be accountable for that decision.

Well thats the way I look at it. :chase:

umm... yeah, ok - thats not quite what I was suggesting. I was merely pointing out that no matter how prepared you are - you can still be taken out by some totally unforseen freak event.
In no way am I implying that we should adopt the mindset "ah fuck it I will just wear shorts and jandals and ride like a retard".

Funny how in a forum you can write something and it gets taken totally out of context, just shows how fickle the written word is...

And you think a falling tree is no danger to a caged motorist?
Of course the risks of riding a bike are greater than other forms of transport. But that does not absolve a roading authority from ensuring the safest possible roads. Some things may be unforeseen, but with years of experience behind them, Transit (whatever their name) should recognise the signs of impending 'trouble'.
Then there is the other side of the coin...
Recently, Transit removed 20+ large trees near the roadside (on both sides) on the southern approach to Taradale/Napier on SH1/50 Expressway. Formerly, this was a rather lovely entrance to Napier, but now is bare. No-one had ever run off the road into one of these trees, nor had any of them lost a branch onto the roadway. The trees were healthy about 50 years old and had grown about 1/3 of their lifespan. When this section of road was re-designated SH1, Transit stepped, in citing the 'dangers' posed, and removed the trees. Yet they will leave others which are much more likely to cause a problem. Go figure.

...Transit stepped, in citing the 'dangers' posed, and removed the trees. Yet they will leave others which are much more likely to cause a problem. Go figure.

So you're criticising Transit for a) removing trees and b) not removing trees. Surely you can see that deciding which trees pose a sufficient danger to be removed and which don't, is a difficult judgement, with which someone will disagree, especially with hindsight. So either way you will be criticised, often for both at the same time. Much like CYFS really. It almost makes me weep for the poor bureaucrats :crybaby:.

Edit: Oh and by the way, I voted Labour, so I'm hardly your classic redneck-libertarian rebel outlaw Kiwibiker who bitches about the nanny state, but I think they should generally leave the trees there and accept that from time to time one of them might fall on the road. Shit happens.

Not at all, actually. I criticise what I perceive to be their poor judgement as to which roadside feature (tree or otherwise) that is likely to be a danger.

...But that does not absolve a roading authority from ensuring the safest possible roads....

(I have selectively quoted a couple of things you've said. I apologise if you think I'm distorting your meaning.)

I don't think a roading authority should aim for the "safest possible" roads. If that was really their goal, they'd start by banning motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrians, not to mention cars > 10 years old. Safety is just one of many considerations.

In the specific case of the tree that fell onto (or into the path of) the police motorcyclist, how many trees would they have to remove between Franz Josef Glacier and Nelson to eliminate the possibility that one would fall down a cliff and onto the road?

I don't know about the Napier/Taradale trees. I presume the problem here was that someone might run off the road into them. It's hard to know how far to go in protecting people from themselves.

I'm just suggesting that it's easy to criticise in hindsight, harder to make these judgements when you may be held accountable and will undoubtedly have someone second guessing you. Just ask Wayne Barnes.

MSTRS
12th November 2008, 09:42
I agree it is not possible to remove all danger. Or dangerous trees. It's the inconsistency that I find 'troubling'. The Taradale trees had been there for 50 years without a problem. Whereas, a tree with an undermined root system was ignored - and it fell on a biker (bad luck on his part in being at that time/place).

The cop is a KB member, he'll smile when he gets out of hospital and reads all this tripe.

FYI, the bike lost its forks, and is written off. It's way munted.

The rider received a deep, nasty wound to his leg, but the safety gear the Police wear saved his hide from a whole lot of grief.

Tomorrow I'll be sorting through his riding gear. It was cut off him by the hospital staff. There goes $4.5K, bugger, but I'm glad he was wearing it all.

The skills the gendarme riders have meant the followers avoided the whole calamity, maybe we can learn from that. The rider will be in hospital for a while yet, and convalescing for quite a while after that. But that's cool, we get to have a beer with him, when maybe we could have been at his funeral.

Actually, I think he doesn't drink beer. But I do.

For the record, there were three other riders behind him and they all saw exactly what happened. 'ere 'tis.

The tree fell and hit the road at the same instant the bike hit the tree. It wasn't sitting on the road until he hit it, it literally fell on his front wheel. Another second later, actually a split second, and the tree would have whomped Muppet, and we'd be attending a wake this week.

The only offence I can see him being charged with is felling a tree (a Rata, I understand) without resource consent.

Tree narrowly fails to slay cop by mere inches. The officer recieving a deep wound to the leg, It being well known that police think on thier feet. It is hard to know if this tree was acting alone or part of a greater west coast forest conspiracy. When intervieved the tree gave only a wooden silence. Alone or not the Wext Coast Sawmillers Association have vowed to redouble thier efforts in the fight agianst the evil tree consparacy. Doc, when asked what they made of the whole incident had this to say, "certainly a coffee table. Perhaps a small gazebo & even a shrubbery with a little garden path too".
