ok maybe it is sort of
i have a tendancy to only round off one side of the knobs on my back tyre
if i take it off and put it on backwards, so the not rounded side of the knob is doing the gripping
is that ok? are they meant to be directional?
if i do it will the back wheel fall off?:shit::Offtopic:

yeah thats fine mate, most dirt bike tyres are made to do that.

you will notice that you wont have as much grip under brakes if you turn it round tho

hence i run mine till ive had enouhg of its lack of grip and buy another although the ms3 i run seam to grip quite well even when getting worn out.

For the stuff I ride in, anywhere drive is awkward, those other matters are more critical. So I don't bother turning my tyres any more.

It is a very common practice and many tyre manufacturers recommend it, indeed some have markers in the tread to show the point it should be reversed.

it something to do with the rubber not being as grippy when its backwards?
because the pattern is asymetrical and i cant imagine why it would be worse if the pattern is the same

I just run my tire till i get pissed off with it then do a short burnout in 5th on the old 450 and its dust within 15 seconds or so. :Punk:

turning it = waste of time,

spend the time you spend shagging around with shit old half worn tyres at work then go buy yourslef a nice new one.

the added bonus of the 5th gear burnout is always fun too, if you like your bike, run the hose at your radiators while youre doing it to save overheating

Think about it Noobi when one side of the knob is worn because of wear the tyre is no longer asymmetrical anymore. Because you have changed its shape by wearing the knob on one side. Therefore you get grip on the sharp side and not on the worn side. So by turning it gives you back the grip you lost under drive but of coarse you loose it under brakes when using the worn side of the knob because you've just turned it that way.
In saying the above you will notice the improved traction more than you will miss the lost braking by turning the tyre! So if the budget is short do it mate you'll get a few more rides out of it!!! But start saving you need a new one soooon!!

but i have 6 gears?
i see so the answer is turn the tyre around and dont brake?:jerry:

i need a new one/set before the kb bbq so i dont come last in the time trial:headbang:

Hey there noobi. You can never have too many tyre threads.

One of the cheapies I tried - either BFG Crossengo or Kenda Millville had dual directional embossed on tyre (think it was the Millville).

Had something like Soft - one direction, Int - the other. Of course I only noticed this after I fitted it. Certainly may have made a difference as heaps of knobs tore off it (On KLX300 too, not a fire breathing 450). No prize for guessing which way round I had it. Binned the tyre at about 15 hrs. Concept seemed a bit sketchy to me anyway. You don't ride hard ground for accelleration and soft ground for braking - on the same tyre. Need good edge for braking too, so I've never bothered turning a tyre myself.

Could easily be wrong here but guessing most makers have same compound front/back of knob (and symetrical pattern), but one of the Michelin tyres is definitely 'one way' traffic only - has a curved paddle shape pattern.

knob reconditioning:
I tried re-edging a couple of front tyre knobs at 3/4 position right where you need that sharp edge for turning bite. Found craft knife cut much easier dipping it in water. Most tyres seem to have a kind buttress strengthening at opposite side on that knob so probably wouldn't weaken too much. Worked quite well but lost patience with it and bought new tyre instead. (I love NEW tyres) Might be worth time spent given current economy though! Definitely better for 'green' factor to get more life out of yer tyre.

Decided re-cutting knobs on back tyre was of dubious merit unless tyre for med or hard terrain, with wide and closer-spaced chunky knobs to start with (Eg not an S12). To get rid of the wear radius, you have to cut so much towards centre of knob you end up with this skinny, overly flexible useless thing (on your tyre).

thanks guys
seems to be that i could turn it round
but i cant be bothered,
seems that i could recondition it
but i cant be bothered, bikes going to the shop soon any how, time for first check since i got it:Pokey::clap:
iv just notice the lack of rear tyre grip lately as the back has a tendancy to slip out alot, not over powering it honest, and its getting to a point where i feel i cant lean the bike over because i fear that it will slip and ill fall over:baby:
lets face it we all hate picking the bike up

probably gonna get the same again, scorpion mx m401 for the front and a dunlop 756 or wateva is the good but cheap one lol
