Sup all,
Been riding for a few years now and enjoy every damn second of it. Currently off the road due to bike being unusable. I've had a few bikes now and am in process of trying for another (ZXR250). Started off with an RGV150S as my first bike had lots of fun till an incident with some wanna be boyracers led my lil toy to the race track in the sky (ah whom I kidding more like the one in the firey depths). Been having fun with a TZR 250 1kt for a coupla years now and its taken everything I've thrown at it (and thrown it at). A lil trip of a cliff at Kawakawa bay broke not only its spirit but it lived to tell the tale. Lately the poor blue stroka has been breaking down to the point I can't afford to keep it running. A stuffed power valve means I only ever got 75% of my engine capacity so am looking forward to getting a ZXR250.
Does anyone know how a ZXR250 would weigh up against a "slightly" used TZR250? The ZXR is newer so engine is more likely to be a lil more powerful but the TZR is a stroka so should pull better power than its 'diesel' cousins? Would this even out? To put it into perspective as to how rooted the TZR is, it maxes out at 150kph (ummm no officer it wasn't a public road) when it should be more like 180-190kph.
Does anyone have any links regarding mods and basic upgrades I could use should the ZXR250 arrive on my doorstep this week?
I figure the first thing on the cards is putting some cash aside for some decent rubber. Would BT45's fit a ZXR250? I've used them on all my bikes as they have been well priced and seem to grip as far as I can get them (I'm not leaning far enough I know). The very bald back tyre of the TZR still has more grip than a new tyre on an old GB400 I was borrowing.
Comments, abuse or advice?

Welcome to the site Darkling :wavey:
I'll let the know it all's help you with technical advice. I'm afraid my only valid contribution to the site is adding to the insanity.

A mint TZR will be quicker than the ZXR250, but the "used" one is probably the same if not slower than the ZXR.... ZXR is good for 180-190kmh
As for tyres... The ZXR takes a 110 on the front and a 140 on the back.. You can get a Pirelli Diablo, but you will have to go up a size on the back to a 150... These will stick plenty for you...
I didnt like my BT45's too hard and spin up easily (this on my RG150) even on the road, let alone the race track.... Otherwise you can get Pirelli Sport Demons for the cheaper choice that is also pretty sticky....

Welcome....
Can't help with the 250 question as when I was on 250cc machines the CBX250RS and VT250FE ruled..... But I could only afford a Suzuki T250 :(

Thanks for the replies guys :)
Riff Raff: lol It takes all sorts to make the world go round. After all what would they do without the insane?
Two Smoker: Yeah I had figured it would be about even, perhaps even tipped in the ZXR's favour. Should at least be a cheaper runner. Will have to check what prices for the diablo's. I've always gotten a set of BT45's for bout $300 NZD which isn't too bad... I have to admit they can spin up pretty good but the TZR seems to do that with most tyres - hasn't the grunt to lift the front wheel it just seems to like spinning the wheel instead. The idiot that did initial work on the TZR when I bought it (some dude called davey who has a bike place in panmure) for some reason put a touring tyre on the back. That was a nightmare to ride. Went straight over the shore and had cycletreads give it a decent set of boots.
Does anyone know of any good bike shops out south auckland way?

Better off just heading out to Mt Eden Motorcycles (they have the Kawasaki franchise...) There is only Blue Wing Honda, and ive never been there...
Honestly try get some sticky tyres, YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE DIFFERENCE!!! And sorry to tell you this, but the BT45 is a sport touring tyre :disapint:
Diablos will set you back about $450... Sport Demons will set you back around $300 odd and will be stickier than your BT45's :niceone:

Welcome bro, i used to have a ZXR years back, loved it to bits (still do), you might be pushing clearance on the rear going to a 150 rear, check and see if anyone has done this before buying, other good rubber to slap on, the Pirelli Demons, Michelin Pilots/Hi Sports, Dunlop GPR70's etc. Mileage is overated in my books and doesn't keep you upright like grip does.
All the best on getting a new ride soon and see you out on a KB ride :2thumbsup

Two Smoke: Rofl funny you should say that. I'm waiting to Mt Eden Motorcycles to let me know if my finance has been approved.
BT45 sport tourer? hmmm didn't know that... would explain why you find it a hard tyre. I know the guys that race the RGV150S use them so I hadn't thought of them as tourer tyres. Maybe we have our wires crossed coz the BT45 (bridgestone battelax) is a sticky tyre hence why I bought it. Or have I misunderstood? (wouldn't suprise me if I had)
Demons sound good but I may have a look at getting the diablo's
Loosebruce: yeah I'd check before chucking them on. Prob just see the guys at cycletreads again. I have to say they are the best when it comes to tyres. Always steered me right when I was getting work done on my bike they've even helped out on things they didn't do which was great. I had to get a new pipe which they helped me locate and install. Sorry I tend to sing praise if I get what I see as good service...
Thanks for all the welcomes guys (and gals of course) I've found it suprising to have so many replies so quickly.

Sticky compared to the standard IRC rim covers maybe, nothing compared to diablo's. BTW TS, my Mt75's are great, thanks for the recommendation.

No worries mate :niceone: I dont know why but i seem to have tried out most of the Pirelli range
BT is the standard letters for any of the bridgestone range.... I use Dunlop TT900GP's for when im racing my RG150 that or BT39SS's
I bloody forgot about Dunlop GPR70's!!! great tyre, sticks like shit to a blanket, that or BT-090's....
I know of one guy that put a Diablo 150 on the back of his CBR250... He liked it alot because of the increased grip...
And as Bruce said come on some KB rides :niceone:

That they are, dont get me wrong though they are a reasonably sticky tyre and last long, i used to have em on my ZXR, but moved to a pilot sport up front and a Hi sport on the back and it was a much noticable difference.

Welcome Darkling.
I dont know much about the TZR250 but I do know that up grading to a ZXR will not only save you money but will be fun in the process. Or you can just get a CBR hehe

Well my finance has been approved and was sposed to get my ZXR250 this afternoon but due to delays with the VIN I can't get till tomorrow :/ Sux as today is the end of my weekend and I can't take the bike for a decent play. They said they would throw in a new pair of gloves for the wait so my absolutely farked ones can be retired.
gsxr750: U want the TZR (1kt)? I can list off exactly what is wrong with it and what damage it has right down to a fairly fine detail... Powervalve to right cylinder is causing a drop in available power. Needs forks to be topped up. Chain shortened/replaced. New rubber for the rear. theres a slight bend in output shaft after the chain jumped its sprocket and locked back wheel, this causes a slow self oiling chain. Also some damage to the sway arm where the chain locked. Hehe this lil lock up caused a 4 car pile up without me even falling off :P Ummm its been off a cliff at some point which damaged some of the subframe. It was cut and set back in place with some reinforcement. oh and a lil rust in the clock mounts. It has a Malbro paint job. Theres a second set of fairings that need fibreglass work coz of that cliff I mentioned. The current fairings are plastic. As far as I know thats every thing that needs looking at. Its had new sprockets, steering head bearings and new front wheel bearings as well as brake pads. Front tyre in good nick (BT45). Oh and it has a farked throttle cable :/ Its had a warrent since repairs to subframe and the damage to the sway arm so they aren't serious.
its a few hundy worth of repairs but for a DIY it would be heaps cheaper to fix up. I just happen to lack that expertise. I was quoted $200 for the forks output shaft and chain. another $80 for powervalve and bout $25 for the new throttle cable. My flatmate offered me $700 so he could do as a DIY but he don't have the cash. The trade in price was $500 but didn't bother. Currently deregged so would need to be put back on road (or not depending on what ur wanting to do with it). I can understand if u don't want :P Its been through a lot but has always come out okish :P
Sniper_CBR: Rofl I'd love a play on the '03 CBR600RR but I know it would be too much for me and don't really like the 250s much...

As you can prob tell from the lack of update I got the bike. They were late by a few days but gave me a nice $160 pair of gloves to make it up :) The ZXR is great! Its throttle just seems to keep going lol :P Had to get ear plugs she screams so much. Already got plans to route one of the ram air intakes to the airbox as they just go out into the engine bay at the mo. I want to get rid of the stupid foam air filter and maybe go with a K&N but have no idea how to setup the ram air and k&n. Without another airbox built in I can't see it having both.
Flatmate has a Mazda GTR turbo'd and modded to hell n back (tho still has 180kph limiter). Gave him a race and ate him up till 150 where he just pulls away...
I'll post a pic when I've managed to take one.

Thats good to hear Darkling. Oh, welcome to the site (didn't say hey the first time!).
What choice did you end up making on the tyres?
Ride safe.

If your TZR was the reverse-cylinder one (89-90 i think) they had big problems, can't remember what it was.
The T model was reliable, which i wish i brought over my NSR.
Out of the 2, i would fix the TZR. The ZXR would feel to bland and boring after riding your TZR.
[Edit] A ittle late with the post, sorry.
