Nothing much in the Hunuas - a bit of quick stuff up to the reservoirs and that's about it.
Pity really as there are tracks all through there that I'd love to explore but the gates are kept locked - walkers and MTB's only.
Plenty of gravel south of Onewhero/Port Waikato.
Can't help you with north of Auck, but some of the other regulars here will, for sure.

From Little Huia to Whatipu seems OK. It may be quite a short ride for a real adventurers but it's got a good scenery. I have some photos in this thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1806140#post1806140)
It's.... OK...

Think I'll go for a quick ride to see if it's accessable.
Edit: I think I'll just cancel that. Google tells me it's a foot path/ tramping track. Guess it's not accessable on bikes.

Noooooooo. All tramping stuff and completely boring for motorcycles.
Generally you need to get out of Auckland to get to decent roads, the AA maps are good as they clearly (and reasonably accurately) show the gravel roads.
South: As Bass says the west coast to Raglan, Kawhia and Awakino are good while the east coast is mostly sealed with some pleasant rooads on the coronamandel (good for a day trip).
North: Between the coast and Puhoi there is a good selection of roads, there is Muriwai beach.... but all these are cut up with seal as well. Heading towards Mangawhai there is more unsealed stuff but you need to follow the coast and farm roads thru here. Towards Dargaville it is mostly sealed, you can meander thru the back country and there is lots of gravel there, down to the northern head of Kaipara you can take the beach around the head and back up to Bayleys beach / Glinks Gully but be warned this is probably not one you would attempt by yourself.
My sunday morning ride from Hillsborough is:
NW motorway to SH16 to Riverhead.
Old North road, Ararimu valley road, Bald Hill road, Ireland road, Waitoki road, Monowai road, Krippner road to Puhoi.
Ahuroa road, west coast road, Tahekeroa road, Kanohi road to Kaukapakapa.
SH16 towards Helensville, inland road, then either old north road, Kiwitahi road or into Helensville...then Rimmers road out to Muriwai beach, south down the beach to Muriwai then back home after that.
Watch out for stock and traffic...
If I have a day available the west coast from Port Waikato is my first choice, speaking of which it must be about time we organised something.....and takers?????

We used to ride on them all the time - hence the reason no one else can.Blame the baby boomer's.
Crisis has all the roads, but he missed my favorite - Kaipara Hills Rd.

Dec 13th is a possibility - will know a bit closer. You realise that's the proposed pre-xmas get together (which I can't attend) weekend I presume?
The evenings would be tricky as I can't get home much before 6 pm.
Makes it a bit too brief to be worth it.

+1 Best from Kaipara out to SH16, watch out for logging trucks
December 13th sounds good , Zeph would probably be a starter as well.

Oh dear!
How sad.
Never mind.
Maybe next time.
Just had a look at Metvuw - the forecast for Sunday is crap. Oh well, it's a few days out yet and this can change pretty quickly.

You're right there Motu, I'd never been up this road until yesterday afternoon, what a neat bit of country; tight, steep and single lane in places with great views of the Kaipara, absolutely wonderfull! :wari:
Other good news...the council has obviously spent some money of gravel as there is lots of it on the roads around Puhoi, Helensville, Kaipara at the moment. This makes a pleasant change from hard packed surfaces and is a great opportunity to hone your riding skills, I spent a pleasant few hours pottering around the area without saying hello to gravity even once....a miracle!
New road discovery #1:
Monowai road then on to Krippener is a nice combination (don't usually do Monowai as there are better parallel routes) but I do need a more agressive rear tho, wheelspinning up Krippener road is fun for a while but some traction might be good too.
New road discovery #2:
Oyster point road near Kaukapakapa towards the kaipara is technically a dead end but appears to have 4x4 tracks off the end of it thru to Jordan road (I believe this is a paper road). This might bear some exploration and conversations with the locals to determine access.
Good time for a thrash around north of Auckland!
