View Full Version : DOH!! Went to VTNZ for warrant. Big mistake

The bike shop I would normally use does it's last warrant a 3.45pm. Didn't make it from work in time.
Bike just had heaps of work done, new rubber and is better than it's ever been - so i thought nothing can be wrong i'll go to VTNZ get it done quick and go out riding tonight.
Big mistake::argh:
Sorry sir its failed.
What the f**k for, its in perfect condition.
You indicators flash too fast.
They are aftermarket and have always flashed that fast and always passed warrants before
In my opinion they flash too much and i'm testing it, obviously the previous testers didn't think so, but i do. You need a reflector too. Off you go
What a c**t.
Even if my indicators flash over the 120p/min, they aren't much over that, just sat outside like a cock with my indicators and a stopwatch. And as for a 50cents reflector, f**k me thats really gonna save my life at night.
:doh::doh::doh: Ah well lesson learnt

I always get my service done at VTNZ Avondale and have yet to have them fail me anything that i didn't deserve, even let me slide on a few things on the promise that i'll 'get it fixed right away'
The reflector thing is blatantly written so that's your mistake there, simple enough to get it sorted. As you said only 50 cents and you have 30 days (i think) to get it done.
The indicator.. Just get a bulb with a higher wattage and it'll flash slower.
Seems to me like you're complaining about them doing their job..

Thanks for the tip man :niceone:

It's supposed to be between 1hz and 2hz, or one or two flashes a second... was it within that? If not you need to get a resistor to go in line that will slow them down a bit.

i've heard of a few testing stations that are pulling up bikes for the same thing.also, the aftermarket pipes scenario.
i'm never taking my bike to the testing stations.they don't really know what they are checking for half the time.
go to the bike shops.at least they know what they are doing.

I am. Just like to have a vent. Not pissed off that it failed, just pissed off that it never has before with the exact same set up and the way the old f***er went on about "his opinion is the only one that counts".
Been sat outside with my stopwatch like a right nugget. Counted 126 flashes in 1 minute so i'm 6 over:angry2:
Few minutes in the garage tomorrow to sort it out.
Missed out on another ATNR:crybaby:

Got my Harley tested at an 'On Road' station once, big mistake. I pulled the pin on them and told them to stand back from the fuckin bike and leave it alone or I'd kick there fuckin ass down one of there inspection pits.
Three of them crawling all over it!!! one bouncing up and down on the seat "to see if the suspension worked" wtf then one started yanking the front wheel of the ground by pulling it over on the side stand "to test wheel bearings and stearing" GET A FUCKING JACK YA PRICKS!!!!!! I said. ''We aint got one to do bikes" they said. "we do all bike with only side stands like this". You might get away with it on a lightweight bike but not a fuckin lardy Harley with just for looks prop stand. Well you not doing mine thank you very much (or words to that effect), got my money back and learnt never to go to cage orientated places ever again.

if you cant get a warrent at vtnz your bike shouldnt be on the road. they are hopeless.
I have passed a warrent with the brake pads in backwards, indicators not hooked up, headlight MILES out of alignment.

I've got a very friendly warrant guy, the "Hole in the Wall" man, I call him.
I rock on up, we talk shit for 10 minutes, politics, "Crap on TV I have seen lately", "Yoof of today", "when I was a boy", etc, he checks my bike/cage over thoroughly, then I'm gone. It's not a bad experience because I have confidence in his decisions.
I take three cages and three bikes up to him. He doesn't sweat the small stuff but will fail me on safety issues like ball joints in the suspension. So good on him. He says stuff like "get that fixed before you come back again" No pressure, just common sense.
You just need to find someone who is friendly and on-side.

Are we talking stone chip... if so What was his reason it failed... that being the case he better be failing 99% of the vehicles on the road...
there must be more to it... ie was it a chip in the headlamp...? (thats why I have head lamp guard) but if that is all I would have refused to paid for that check...

hehe....stop beating about the bush nico. Why don't you say what you really mean!!
Took the CB to Upper Hutt VTNZ yesterday. No problem at all. Tester was Ken who, being a biker, was easy to work with, very chatty, interested in my aftermarket bling and sympathetic to the last remaining 1.5mm on my rear tyre!
Different strokes for different folks I guess.

That sort of sums up what the guy I deal with told me. Words to the effect that a lot of it is attitude, yours and his. If you roll up and start telling him how to do his job you might well strike a problem. This doesn't apply to VTNZ who are a problem...

Can anyone recommend a bike shop that actually does WOFs in house in CHCH?
Just had the viffer done at VINZ yesterday, because I suddenly realised it had run out and they are just around the corner, and open late.
Talked shit with the tester while he was going over it, was polite and friendly, and it passed no probs.
I just started asking questions and distracting the guy when he got too close to some naughty bits of the bike such as the stealth "factory" exhaust, the slightly adjusted rear fender oh and what are these plugs here for mate? Oh that's for a GPS to plug into so I can tour around this lovely country...not a radar detector at all, honest. :devil2:
However I would prefer a bike shop does it, especially if they are stricter on things that will keep me safer. Just need to find one!

why not just put a non laod sensative flasher in and a reflector on go back get your recheck and ride off knowing that you now have the perfect bike. The tester was well within his rights to fail ya. The reflector is there for when your tail light goes out. That way the muppett car driver has no excuse for running you over from behind.

In my opinion, if your bike isn't the same as when it came from the factory (ie.. you haven't changed parts or modded) then don't take it to VTNZ or AA for WOF.

I was lucky some years ago in Napier - thank God VTNZ didn't know what they were doing - they said they don't do many bikes - I had grooved slicks on that had "Do not use on Highway" of whatever - I had forgotten completely about them and was chatting away to the guy when I looked down at the tyres and saw the message clearly - I kept chatting lol. Think they may have been more interested in a "girl riding a big bike". Couldn't wait to get out of there - it passed. Bike passed with a broken clutch lever too - in that the tail end had snapped off.
I now stick with motorbike shops. Have yet to find a shop that will fix my indicators properly tho.

never had a problem with the guys at northwood vtnz they don't stress too much and tell you if it needs fixing before next wof. took an old cbr400 aero into get a wof at cranford street, had no rear fender, chain guard and aftermarket pipe. They admitted they didn't get bikes in very often and they asked me to do the brake tests, ie ride at semi speed towards them and brake, I knew my brakes worked glad they had faith too:blink:

I went to Upper Hutt and they made me do the brake test as well, and then hold the bike on the stand so the could look at the brakes. Got out of there pretty quick and thinking how easy it was.
Really it depends on the guy and how pedantic they are - cause there is one guy at UH that failed the step sons car - for loads of things including stickers on the rear window. When we took it for a retest the lady just shook her head at the list of faults.

Yer, i've noticed this alot lately, when i head off to the AA the ask what cc it is, only 1 of the guys has his full license, so if its over 250 and hes not on i do the show the brakes work thing, often do it on the 250's anyway for ease
