View Full Version : Coro Loop warning

Between me heading over to Whitianga a couple of hours ago and returning just now, a roading gang has moved in and started re-sealing (full width) the Coro Hill just to the east of Coromandel Town. They've started on the western side right on the bottom and if I heard the lollipop guy correctly, they'll be working their way east over the next few days so the Hill isn't going to be a whole lot of fun during that time. Normal story - tar and big chips everywhere.
For those determined to do the whole Loop this weekend, take good care of yourselves:done:

Isnt that one of the best condition roads in the country anyway? Good choice of time council, sure this could have been done earlier in the year.....real smart.

I rode down to Thames last Sunday to meet Insomnia01 and there was a lot of patching on the coast road and the first hill on the Wilson's Bay side so I guess there's a chance that there's more in the hills by now - haven't ridden south since then.
Yes, you're right Jeremy. The Hill itself is in really good nick and for the life of me, I don't know why they want to seal it unless they're not going to do it all. I wouldn't bank on it though as the 100 odd metres they did whilst I was in Whitianga was perfectly ok beforehand!

Just back from doing the loop. Was OK a couple of weeks ago...just some gravel north of Thames. Now it's much worse as they've "patched" the road in numerous other places. Gravel as you come round blind corners cranked over. Worst of all is all the tar. It was literally pissing out my bellypan when I stopped. Spent the best part of 2 hours getting it off (carb cleaner seemed to be the only thing that'd remove it).

Thanks for the heads up mate.
Wankers. That was perfect hot seal. I reckon they just want to stuff us bikes up from having some fun.
Yep, as usual perfect timing aye? :(

Very true, great stuff and butter is good too except it's got expensive cos it comes from those things we get our riding suits from. :)

Did the loop today, not as bad as everyone says. A bit of resurfacing on the hill south of Coromandel town, and on the hill to the East. In all, a farken great day.

Just got back from the dentists in Whitianga and here's the latest update.
Coro Hill - Same as last Friday - full width reseal for about 150 metres at the bottom of the hill on the western side. No attempt to clean up the loose metal yet. That's the only resealing on the hill itself.
Castle Rock cafe to Matarangi. Only the odd spot of patch sealing, nothing to worry about although there is the odd spot of loose chip on corners.
Matarangi - about 3 km of full width reseal with deep chips. Probably done yesterday. Don't know when it will get swept.
Kuatunu - about 1 km of full width reseal with deep chips. Only laid this afternoon and still working on it.
The roading gangs are clearly working clockwise towards Whitianga.
Cheers,
Geoff
