Well I reckon its time to get something underway, first though I wanted to get some good ideas about where we can gowant we want to do, and importantly, Where to stay .
Im thinking in about3 months as Im away in South america for 1 month in two weeks.
We could camp, we could motel, we could sleep under our bikes, we can do anything we want, but its got to be another AWESOME weekend.
It has also got to be under $100 tops as alot of us are not weathly, me included.
The only Idea I have at this stage is a weekend at taupo, camping at the Racetrack in a Big Marque, We can have organised events throughout the day, training rides a Kiwibiker Race !!!! Tricks session etc, good thing for those with kids as well and an a Massive BBQ that night, Also some organised rides through the area.
Any way thoughts welcome, Keep it real and ON TRACK.
Lets make it a GOODY:2thumbsup

:yeah: It would be fine at that time of the year just wear thermals. Plus that many people in a big tent would be warm. I like the camping idea it keeps the cost down. No colder than cold kiwi an other events lets do it. :wari: :wari: :wari:

I was thinking about another legendary KB rally... Good on ya Quasie!
I'm sure there are plenty of things one can do in a tent to keep warm :niceone:
Seriously though, do you mean $100 as total cost for food and accommodation? I'm pretty easy when it comes to where, when and how much. If we were camping, there'd need to be a place of solid ground to park bikes. Anyone have a Marque tent big enough?
It's still early days yet, keep em ideas coming. 2 months sounds good to me, early April?

Sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately in April the only weekends I will have off are the last two. The same goes for other blue watch KBers ie Speedmedic and Backfire.

While understanding a need to be fiscally frugal, not every biker is into Taupo, tents or track riding.
Decent cabins (preferably with their own dunnies, so's us old dudes with weak bladders and altzheimers don't get lost or mugged by Guy Ropes in the middle of the night) and entertaining options for day rides would be more our cup of flat white.
Belt Road motorcamp in New Plymouth would meet most people's needs, offering the full gamut from tents onwards. There are numerous rides that can be done from there too, for riders of varying skill levels. A KBer lunch at the Whangamomona pub would be a shit load of fun!
There is a range of venues in New Plymouth that I am sure could do a cheap and cheerful dinner as well.
Another option could be that big famous motorcamp whose name I can never remember in Napier...

De Bretts camping ground at Taupo has a wide range of accomodation including tent sites, a thermal pool with a built in BBQ.
We used it for a Guzzi rally once and it's was not too shabby. Bastard of a place for rides though. Too much traffic (IMHO) and people.
We did get a little area put aside for us though!
Napier is another cool place. We had a Guzzi rally there and took over a whole motel complex. It was very reasonable and an easy stroll to the local pub that put on a feed and a band.

Albatross (no you don't get frickin wafers with it)
It's like $65 for a double (ph 0800 ALBATROS). It's on the main drag and bikes are visible but it's no sweat 'cos it's busy and well lit. The big plus is a possible tour of the back roads up the Tuki Tuki valley to the Patangata pub for lunch and then back down the ridge road (I might get lost a couple of times)

well as far as we go, new plymouth is just too far for us to consider. the last time we went down there it took forever.
We'd definately consider napier, we could ride there and back in a day if needs be, we would far rather not do the camping thing either, cos if the weather is shitty, as it often is in april, we don't fancy a cold wet night anywhere especially with work pending monday morning, but hey majority rule in this game, so whatever. cheers L

Obviously date and venue have not yet been finalised.
May a humble South Islander suggest 14th & 15th May. Those from further afield who have just completed the Southern Cross may be able to join in. I know I would.
For a possible venue, How about Waharoa airfield at Matamata. they have bunk rooms and cabins at a reasonable price plus camping sites for those who like to tent. Full kitchen facilities and good modern ablution blocks. Its also close to the restaraunts in Matamata and the hot pools at opal springs or Okaraire. Its also not too cold even in mid winter, in fact May is still quite mild.

If it involves sleeping in a tent I won't be there.
Taupo has racing three w/ends in April:
3rd is Pacific Club meet
17th is Sidecars boys "have a go" day
24th is Auckland Club meet
May 7th/8th is tentatively an endurance race at Pukekohe (yet to be confirmed - Vince Sharpe is organising)
8th May is Pacific Club meet at Taupo
21st May is Auckland Club meet at Taupo
Good luck with the organising Quasi, I understand you did a great job last time.
If there's motels with my own bed/shower/toilet available, and if I'm not at a race meeting, I'll be there!

Okoroire is on the road between SH27 & SH28 south of the Hinuera Straights/Te Poi. Nice pup. Quasi - take the Quarry turnoff at the Karapiro Mobil, when you hit the straights, go straight across there until you hit SH27, which is a right/left dog leg intersection. When you get to the end of that road, turn left then when you hit the Okoroire T intersection, turn right & the pub's right in front of you. It's a good set up & a popular motorcycle gathering place on the weekend.
I reckon that & Matamata are too far north, especially if some of the South Islanders are keen to join us. All you pussy Auckland people should be able to go further than that! :sly:

The deal is for All Kiwibikers , so to be fair to everyone it MUSt be central north islan, ie Napier, Taupo, New Plymouth, this way no one has to have all two days in the saddle but everyone can get in a decent ride.
For those good mates of mine that only have race bikes, it seems Taupo is booked up for some time, so this idea wont owrk, so get those road bikes up to speed.
Remember we will ideally need to accomodate up to 100 people, last year we had 60 odd, this year will be bigger.
The BIGEEST problem and only Obstacle is accomdation, we need somewhere capable of holding this many people for one night.
The other option of course is to name the city and everyone soughts there own accom and we hold a gathering that night or something ?

Big camping ground that has a wide variety of accomodation types and a quiet BBQ spot where we can all go get fonged.
Duct tape adventures are best kept indoors. Inexpertly applied it can fuck someones paintwork which aint funny in the slightest. Expertly applied, it can keep a troublesome guest subdued for hours...
Not that i'd know of course...
so.. What we want is a big camping ground with a pub wot does meals close by. We select an unpopular weekend or something really frickin stupid like a monday night and all take a days leave...

I was at two in the area. One was maybe Rainbow something? And, I THINK the other was the Pickled Parrot???
But either way, I think I know the one you mean. Very nice, but do they have enough rooms? 60 - 100 people, a few fewer rooms obviously, due to couples. Also, the one I'm thinking of only had street parking. Hmm, maybe I could sleep on the street, and put my bike in the room?

Oh - Rotorua sounds good! Prob the earlier the better weather-wise. But then again if we did it last year in that weather so we can prob cope with anything (except I won't have SC's car to chuck a second change of riding gear in this time!)
Punakaiki would also be awesome (camping ground with cabins, pub/restaurant around the corner, nice roads, a beach...) but perhaps a little too far.

If you are thinking Rotorua, try Waikite Valley Hot Pools and Thermal Area (you trun off SH5 by the Waitapu Pub, or you can come in off SH30). I was there last weekend having a late Xmas BBQ with the BOP CC (a Tuaranga MC). Awesome I tell you:2thumbsup

Now we are on a good track Backpackers!!!! why didnt I think of that, ON YA AFFMAN
Do you think Rotorua is to far away for the welly MOB?
I will look at other Backpackers in the area today.
I like the idea of Napier or New Plymouth as the roads in the area are so much better, but then again Taupo has a race track , but the track is booked,,,,,, mmmmmmmmm thinking thinking thinking
Good stuff though people, keep up the thinking
Rotorua is an awesome ride for us, so we're keen, there is a relatively cheap municipal motorcamp in rotorua can't think what it's called offhand, has lots of cabins as well as camping area, have stayed there before, plus has some rather dated hotpools. However anything in rr needs to be booked well in advance, it's very hard to get last minute accomodation there.

Okay, Ive done some research and there is only one backpackers in the central north island which can cater for a reasonable number of peps around 80, Ive contacted them but it wont be enough people Im sure.
So this is where we are heading at this stage.
National Park has a bunch of large accomodation Backpacker style facilities, 144 peps (now we are talking) None with a pool but hot tubs are available at one.
It is central
it is big enough
it has a bar and Disco
it has good roads around it
So will keep you all posted about the responses to the emails Ive sent before posting anything "official like"
Sounds like it will be a goody !!!!!!!!!!!:2thumbsup

Bah, it's not that bad...I went there for the first time about 2 years ago thinking I'd be driven out by the smell...but to me it just smells different. Not bad just different. You end up only noticing it when you think about it...although when you get back home and have a shower, your clothes remind you what it smells like
To summarise-
I like Rotorua and I'm proud of it!! :p
The smell is hydrogen sulfide too much and it'll kill you. A reall problem when I was digging drains in Rotovegas, had to moniter the gas level all the time to stay safe. Anyway you don't smell it after a while cause it deadens the sense of smell.

I really wanted input on this forum , its not the actual Waiakto rally 3 page as such, BUT Im thinking tentatively 23rd 24th April (anzac weekend) so Saturday Sunday, then you can have monday to recover so to speak.
The main reason for this date is Riff Raff and some of the other paramedics are not working ,so they can come, safety first of course.
If anyone can raise a Really great reason why it shouldnt be this weekend say so now.
Im negotiating a deal with a few Ski resort Back packer style places in National Park at the moment, I will now the deal in the next few days.
I will put up the actual event in a few days.
the route may follw a bit later.
I will be talking to White trash and Slipstream this weekend about them organising the routes, logistics, safety support vehicles from the south end.
I REALLY HOPE SOME SOUTHERNERS COME !!!!
I really want it to be another awesome weekend for everyone.
We will be doing the old Spank fundraiser as well this will be biult into the pricing.
I expect the costs to be around the same level including the same deal, bed meals etc.
I will also be trying to get a decent party thing going on, band or something.
SO will keep you posted, from this thread it would seem it will be HUGE
