Ok, I'm starting from the start (= 0 experience or gear).
What am I realistically looking at for all the 'gear' needed to get on a bike?

I depends what you want and how much you can/want to spend
Leather or cordura. Leather is better, costs more and is probably less practical/comfortable than cordura.
You can go to bike shops or Motomail etc. and they could probably kit you out (head to toe) in cordura for ~$6-700 IIRC.

No budget as yet, going to see the bank man on Tuesday to see how much I can squeeze out of them!
I don't want to go cheap and regret it, just trying to find out what I'm going to have to budget for.

Well if you are an ikey scotchman like me, and an impoverished old man to boot, ekeing out a frugal and penurious existence on the smell of an oily rag, your budget is likely to be
Ex army great coat - $50
Warewhare work boots $70
Riggers glubs $30
Safety shop leggings $60
Helmet , new, $200
Total $410. But if I can scronge boots from werk , that reduces it to $340. Such savings count when you are a IOM ekeing out etc.
If you are a Gen Y sprotsbike rider, clocking it all up on the student loan, or on dad's credit card, then the list is more like
Jacket - $2000
Boots - $1000
Glubs - $700
Leggings $1000
Helmet $2000
Other stuff $1000
Total $7700
So, pick a point along that continuum (I'm assuming that you are not into Harleys. If you are , Harley brand name stuff downthe line, allow $20000. And another $10000 per year.
If you are thinking of buying a new bike to learn on, many of the dealers offer 'Starter packages' of bike plus gear, which can be very good value.
Do not be too proud to buy seond hand on everything except a helmet.

Ixion is onto it! :niceone:
Also, you could check out your local pawn shop/cash converters/buy sell swap paper/TM, for good second hand leathers!
First however.. I would STRONGLY recommend you give Andrew & Lynne at "Roadsafe" a call & book yourself onto their rider training/licence courses!!!! Good training is the BEST investment you can make for your motorcycling future!!! :Punk: Gear might save your skin/bones.. but training might save your life!!! :first:

Leather or cordura. Leather is better, costs more and is probably less practical/comfortable than cordura.
You'll probably end up with both eventually if you're a daily rider. Codura is far more practical when you start out and provides 90% of the protection of leather at lower speeds (maybe up to 100km/h). It gets hot in summer though and at high speed will dissolve if you slide a long way on the road.
I ride in codura with waterproof gloves and boots if I expect rain or it's cold. Basically all winter.
Summer weekend fangs I wear a two-piece leather suit with summer gloves and boots and a back protector.
I'm sure there's plenty of KBers in Wellwood who'd be happy to go shopping with you. Realistic budget is about $5-700 all up (helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, boots) for cheap stuff. As Ixion said don't be shy to get second hand to begin with.

Scrimp on gear. Spend on trianing. The best gera is that which falls apart from sheer old age, never having been put to the test.

Mate that's like $3k of gear isn't it? Takes a while to work out what you want out of your gear so don't go nuts to begin with.

It comes down to the old story of how much you want to spend, take a look around a few bike shops, take note of prices, top price does not nessesarily mean best quality, also figure out what type of riding you mainly wish to do.
Avoid thin dress leather, might look good in the Bar or at the Cafe, but wont save your butt from road rash, you want to keep as much skin on you as possible.
If you get a chance check out TSS Red barron in Alice Town Lower Hutt, they have a good range of gear to suit most budgets.

hi,
$1000 will see you through till your full license. you dont want to spend much less then that. remember you dont have to spend big dollars to get a good helmet thats the mistake i made. tss are pretty good, well they were when i got my gear. to be honest all the shops in wellington are pretty good just dont expect to much.
you could also try deano from the site, he is the wellington agent for q???moto.
what sort of budget do you have?

Mate, you're getting some good answers and some piss-take answers.
Minimum legal gear, helmet. Buy something that fits really well, full face, and a good visible colour. $500 should see you right.
Back protector. Under $100.
Good gloves. Under $150 for something decent.
Jacket. Buy textile for the beginning bit - leather leaks when it rains. Buy something with good CER certified padding/armour. Fit is super important. $200 minimum.
Pants - as with jacket above. Similar money as a minimum. Don't be afraid to buy off trademe, but double check the sizing - try before you buy.
Boots. You don't need to spend moonbeams, look for good ankle support, and calve coverage.
Pick and choose, you won't look like Rossi from day one. Everyone started somewhere, but start with the lid, back protector, gloves, and jacket.

Ahhh I see - you know what you want because you've been riding for a while right?
Don't tell me, you know exactly which bike you'll upgrade to when you get your full too so you won't bother test riding any :niceone:

I want leather as It's my personal preference the gear I'm looking at is dainese as they make a nice jacket that fits me as i am quite a small build. I want a good set of gear as i have come off in the past and it hurts (go figure who would have know coming of something at speed can be painful). The gear I'm after is going to be the same stuff for awhile unless I wreck it and I want gear that will be good on whatever bike I ride 50cc-1500cc. I'm not going to scimp on gear and personaly my safety has no price. My 2 cents any way I was just trying to give the guy an idea of what kind of deal he can get and an idea of the cost of good gear.

That's my point.. I don't believe such gear exists. As a rider's taste (and experience) in bikes evolves so will their needs for gear. Generally speaking that is. You might well be sweet.

$$ spent doesn't equal more safety. You only have to read the helmet test results to see that. It buys comfort, bling and cool factor tho.
I trust you've got a back protector in there given your focus on safety?

Good gear is a lot cheaper. About $1500 will get you into a full setup in the good range. The $3k+ range is bling gear that goes beyond protection into style and comfort. That's not a diss... I wear about $3.5k of gear when I go out for a fang.
Fair enough if you want to dive in with it (it's your money after all) just pointing out the average newb probably shouldn't as there's a good chance they'll realise they should have got something else in about 6 months time.
In other words, I'm very glad I took some random KB person's advice and started cheap (but quality) and added as I went. Would have wasted thousands otherwise.

I do see you point and yes I agree about the bling factor. Also I did ask tam about back protectors both the kind that go into your jacket as well the ones that are seperate.

Need a new pic with my new gloves and boots :)
Go separate for back protector mate. Ideally you want it to cover your coccyx. Best ones you can get are the Knox Aegis. I've just got one and it's freakin awesome.
Quasi had some coming in but I'm not sure if he's still got them in stock. It's pricey but it's a CE level 2 approved which is the best you can get. I think only one other one might be the top Spidi for the same price.

He's right out of the AEGIS model. Demand was higher than expected, apparently. Not sure when he'll have more in. I just ordered a Knox Contour Race. A bit pricier, same CE level 2 protection, less turtle-looking, presumably does the same job.

I got gear like that... 15-20 year old gear that falling apart but never has it slide down the road... (and I hope not to test it either  )
Personally while you are on your learners I would go for Coudura but estimated cost for gear ranges;
Leather $500 - $1000+
Coudura $500 - $600
Helmet $250 - $400+
Boots $150 - $400
Gloves $100 - $200
Extra
Wet Weather gear $80 - $200
Thermals $40 - $300

I second that opinion. My wife and I just got Knox Aegis back protectors from Quasi, and they are the bees knees!! Separate back protectors are definitely the way to go for real protection! Much better than being dead or in a wheel chair because you decided not to have a proper back protector! Not enough people use them ..... FIIKWN ???
Get good gear ... not the top range to start with maybe, but "good" protection at least!
Cheers.
