Just having a good rant about something the really gets my goat...and I see it happening every day.
Could someone please shed some light on why some people camp out on the inside lane (SH1), drive at 80km and refuse to move over? One would have thought that after a while, one would notice that long queue of traffic following and others undertaking.
I really can't understand what thought processes , if any, are going on in their heads?

Do you mean outside lane?

He does mean the outside and the poor chap may even be from another country.
Why do people do it? Because they don't get taught to do otherwise because there is no legal requirement to do so in NZ. The "Keep Left" thing is purely courtesy, unlike the UK where you get ticketed for passing on the left. Courtesy is something the average Kiwi not only can't do, they're actively suspicious of people who are actually courteous. Wave someone through an intersection when you have right of way and watch the avergae Kiwi spend 30 seconds trying to figure out what is going on and then they either sit there and stare suspiciously at you and try make you go, flashing lights and tooting horn, or they'll try to prove that they have bigger courtesy testicles than you and try insist that you go. You can't just accept the offer, because that may mean that the other person thinks you are special needs or something.
I loved driving in the UK. Really freaking busy, but people were super polite and traffic didn't stop moving unless something forced it to like lane closures, accidents and roadworks. The M25 must be a nightmare now they've lost two lanes to Buses.

It used to irk me too, but then I remembered I'm on a bike and I have two other overtaking lanes on a piece of 4 lane blacktop.

Well, I've been enlightened this morning. For all these years I've had my insides and outsides inside-out? Must be down to my early years in other countrie. Learning to ride -and taking my exam- on a Harley Sportster (the z1300 was a little too "cumbersome" to take the exam with), followed by a few years of defensive riding classes in the the Middle-East and many more years in the UK and Europe.... Sh** I'm all nostalgic now.
I meant right lane...

After decades of studying this phenomenon I came to the conclusion that it was because they are inconsiderate wankers who should be dragged from their cars, gutshot, fed to the dogs, and have their remains hung up alongside the road as a warning to others (along with those who don't use indicators)

Can one of you legal beagal types shed light on this one--I was of the understanding that the law states you MUST keep as far left as possible when driving.
I thought that if you can get hassled for overtaking on the left there must be a corosponding keep left law

Multi lane highways in NZ aren't regarded as a single highway, each lane is a highway in its own right. There is a legal provision for failure to keep left, but it relates to driving to the left of your lane, not the left lane of the multi lane highway you're on. Failure to keep left is the minimum charge laid in a head on.

You must have been travelling well under the speed limit to get that, or someone didn't like you.

If the passing lanes have a sign that states "Keep Left Unless Overtaking" then failing to do can earn you a ticket.
And if they hold up a few cars I find 'Inconsiderate Driving' works good too.

Could you move up here please? I know a couple of places where you could sort your KPIs out in about 3 hours and then have the rest of the year off.

The other day I was going along a long straight at about 90 with a few cars in front of me.
On the other side of the road was a passing lane, no cars in sight. The lines are white so I go to pass on their passing lane when some boy racer comes around the corner coming straight at me.
I'm thinking oh yeah he'll realise he's meant to keep left and get out of my way. Does he? NO.
Nearly fucking takes me out...
Why you should keep left.

As I understood... you are required by law to keep as far to the left as is practical, but when lanes are marked... overtaking on the left is allowed... and legal.
If there are any that are more knowledgeable on the law than I, feel free to correct me...

I just thought it was the massive magnets they install in the median barrier.
What pisses me off more is waiting 10km for a passing lane then having the cage in front of you pull out and sit next to the slow arse in the left lane holding up a line of traffic who'd like to pass.
At least with motorways you can just split past the offender into a nice clear lane when your patience runs out :innocent:

Guilty as charged. I often won't pass a truck that's pulled over but still moving because I can't see what's on the side of the road that might cause them to suddenly return to their lane. I've had a couple of times where this has saved me from being shunted into opposing traffic.

Yep sometimes trucks and things pull left to let you pass in the dumbest places.
I'm thankful that they are at least trying though...

Hmmmm ... I always thought keeping left was a mandortry requirement of the road. i can totally understand your frustrations here and it frustrates the bejesus out of me, which in turn recipiates a torid of verbal abuse out of my mouth to the inconsiderate dimwit. There are way to many of them out there. No wonder there is road rage
2 or more laned roads are a prime example of failing to keep left, I use the right hand lane to pass and when I do I always seem to strike a dick travelling at 80kms in it, oblivious to the fact its a faster lane primarily used for passing.
Better still there are the "passing lanes" in which every bastard seems to speed up to the point of breaking the speed limit so no bastard can pass then slow back down to their original speed before the passing lanes were even approched.
The thought process that goes on in their minds is to simply stay in front and not let any bastard pass freely. I reckon they purposley insight frustration.

...or better still are the pimply-faced jerks too bust texting to bother with what's going on around them.
I pay particular note to the idiot a couple months ago between Ohau and Manukau on SH1 who was holding a cup of coffee in one hand whilst texting with the other. Problem was that he was driving and happened to try and overtake without looking..at the same time I was overtaking. End result= racing strips down the side of the ute and obliterated wing mirror. Could have been curtains...but held it. Should have fecking smashed the bastard but was far too kind pointing out what the problem was- and I wasn't referring to the coffee he spilt all over himself. Fecking moron! :2guns:
