Just wondering if anyone has done this, going from Auckland to Wellington with out using SH1 or using it to the very minimum.

That's easy - how about doing it without going near any main roads at all,do as much gravel as possible...

I went to see `4skins on the weekend - went down the Whangaehu Valley Road, just past Ohakune...got lost..ended up in Hunterville. Some of the roads were goat tracks. The TDM was a bit out of it's comfort zone.

We also did red rocks...

Actually I was thinking of that very same weekend as well. Though, I'll just need to work out a few things first.

I travel from Waiuku to Turangi on a regular basis and cross HW1 only once, at Te Awamutu.Wellington shouldn't be to hard with a bit of planning.
Heaps better roads to :niceone:

My very first North Island trip was in 1973 to compete in the Shell 500. he return journey southwas to leave the main road at Pokeno, then Matamata, Rotorua, Murapara, Wairoa, Napier, Masterton, Wellington. No SH1 south of Pokeno, and a fair bit of gravel through the Waikaremoana area.

It was a great trip. :banana:

Choice mate - living proof a TDM is not just a street bike! Sure wouldn't be much fun with those tyres,how was the going in the thick stuff?

It's not possible to travel from North Cape to Bluff by road without contacting or using SH1.

It is, however, possible to do the journey without passing through traffic lights (easier going north than south).

Not much problem on the gravel, I think because the tyres are narrow by "proper" road bike standards. The suspension was another matter - it was unhappy coping with ruts and washboard braking areas, th efront in particular. This made going at any reasonable speed a bit dicey...

Just be a bit careful.
It has been washed out in several places and tons of new gravel added and graded recently in the middle. I think at the highest point the whole road fell off the hillside, 'cause it looks brand new. It wasn't like it was impassable or nuthin', it just required a lot of concentration to ride the TDM in deep gravel. The LC4 woulda been a hoot.

yeah but me old pig just sledges thru gravel

might be goin on a coro loop on sunday but very early 5 or 6am start. homotown -thames - tapu - coroglen - across 309 to coro town - and then matarangi to look at me dirt - and whitianga - coroglen - tapu - homotown

ant been out much as me new accesory has been holdin me back. i showed im ya piccie and this is wot he did

A very simple trip from Hunua, go under SH1 (drury) follow the learners road (SH22) to Ngaruawahia, down SH39 to Otorohanga, then Te Kuiti (SH3), down to Wanganui (SH4), back onto SH3 to Bulls (SH1/3) Sanson then through to Palmy to visit with Hooks. From there you have a choice of going over the Paihiatua track/Mangamairie/Eketahuna/Alfredton/Masterton/Galdstone all the way to Martinborough then over the Rimutaka hill to Wellington or down SH57 through Shannon to (sigh) SH1 and Wellington.

Just one of many 'ways'

yep I have done that way to / from Wellington and Wanganui. Except the SH22 part coming back.... (buggered from riding, so SH1 it was)

Did the Auckland to Wanganui in 1 day and Wanganui to Wellington thru the far east side and the Rimutakas the 2nd. And a 1 day trip Wellington to Wanganui to National Park then SH1 to Taupo (rest for 4 hours) then head out east to Te Kuiti / Otorohanga and back. (that was for the Metzelar meet at Taupo)

If you have more time you can also head out on SH3 towards New Plymouth and then depends on the weather / wind / time you can go around the mount or short cut it, and ride up one of the access roads for a bit of view.

No plans exactly when just something I would like to do in the future.
