View Full Version : Do many of you ride with your bloke as pillion?

I've got my full licence, but am still pretty inexperienced. My husband hasn't got a licence, but says he'd be happy to ride as a pillion. I always seem to see couples but it's the girl on the back. We don't have a problem with it, but I'm just wondering if it's very common.

Haven't seen it myself, but I'd see no problem with it.

I think your husband would get the hassles, not you!

Rarely, but have done it. He's not a great pillion as he rides himself. He always comments I'm a crap pillion, too, but he's more experienced with riding with pillions.
Reason I have taken him on the back is we were/are wanting to tour at some stage, and if we're only taking one bike, I'd like to be able to ride sometimes as well (pillioning is boring).
As he's taller & weighs a bit more than me, definitely notice him on the back and when he decides to help out at stops by being "the stand" it drives me nuts.
It's the taking off (and slow speed bits) that you really notice the extra weight, but once riding, not too bad.
If he decided to do a boobie feel while I'm riding along, I'd either hit him when we stopped, drop the bike or do something equally dumb, so he can keep his hands to himself haha

I have ridden my Ninja with my partner on the back no problems. Its amazing the looks you do get when a female is riding and the male is on the back. I must admit thou my partner doesnt really enjoy sitting on the back as he said the rear seat on it is very uncomfortable and because he is alot taller than me his knees are just about up to his ears.

I have never pillioned the man but then I have only ever had a pillion once so far anyway. Riding is a pretty solitary thing for me (large family if you get my drift) anyway even if I had my full I can pretty much guarantee he will not ever go pillion with me. Too much testosterone in the man.
Well someone had to admit it. :spanking:

I'm not confident enough to try it; I don't like pillioning people at all. I'd worry about dropping the bike at low speeds for one thing. Also, my husband likes to go WAY faster than I do so I'm sure pillioning with me would drive both of us nuts.

That being said, I'm sure there are plenty of gals out there with a bit more confidence who would be happy to do it.

Yeah the only issue I can see would be if yr man is a biggun. Given the fact that you are still unexperienced that would definately compromise your ride.

I have solved the issue of taking passengers by removing the rear pegs. LOL.

kids are way easier to pillion due to their light weight...........we have graduated sizes of pillion for any occasion......

however they do tend to wriggle around sometimes which could be disconcerting if you are not used to it......

and i did have miss 10 yrs fall asleep on the back one night.........very exciting.

Before I met my hubby, I had a guy pillion on a bike I rode...

Now, though, I wouldn't pillion my hubby because he weighs in at quite a bit more than me and I don't feel comfortable with even a large backpack on, so don't think I could pillion him.

I only pillion on his bike when absolutely necessary! I prefer to ride my own ride...

I hear you BC, I'm in the same position. My hubby is quite a bit bigger than me but if I was assured that the bike would handle having the "mis-distributed" weight mass then I'd happily take him.
I have pillioned my 70kg son a number of times, including on the wee ginny!! (and got a number of second looks that time). Thought he'd be horrified to be seen on the back of mum's bike, but it doesn't worry him at all. In this day and age of all the gear usually worn it's not always easy to tell the gender of rider or pillion at a glance. It's more when you dismount and remove helmets!

I also meant to add, good on any man who is not ashamed to be seen on the back of his wife's/partner's bike. A lot of men (mostly those not into riding anyway I'd guess) would see it as akin to castration; that the pussy seat is exactly what that title suggests.......... But any man who can ride behind a woman and not be embarrassed by it is obviously very secure in their manliness and gets the big :clap::clap: from me.

Hey funny I took my man on the back of my bike over to hamner springs on a ride had a blast it did feel funny having a guy on the back but if he can handle it go for it I was quite inexperienced with a pillion but I must say the bike stuck to the road heaps better with the two of us on it was good

I learnt to ride on the road by pillioning my partner. We had an '81 or '82(?) 750 Katana and would swap on long rides. Fully loaded pack, two up along the Foxton straights with side winds taught me alot. In time he even let me commute on it.:2thumbsup

Have pillioned a number of guys over the years but the funniest one was a staunch Harley rider with the Jonny Rebs n HD vest etc. Was a poker run and he tried to do the big hero take off after the first pub and snapped his rubber band in front of everyone!
He did the rest of the ride in the back-up vehicle. After the do, he needed a lift back to Rotorua so he hopped on the back with me on my old CBR600!! Hah!

When I lived in Napier I had a male friend who loved being pillion on my bike. The funny thing tho was he had very long blond hair and a beard = I had short blond hair so when we stopped off at the pub it was hilarious seeing the mouths drop when Baz took of his helmet then I took mine off. He is going to get his motorbike licence next year.

I took another male pillion from Napier to Taupo once - he was a harley rider and used to skite about his riding skills - so I took him and yes he was a good pillion - he told me he loved speed so I gave him that - well apparently he told his mates I was a bloody mad woman, complete nutter etc - served him right for bullshitting me. If he'd asked me to slow down I would have, it wasn't my intention to scare the living shit out of him.

I had my 17 year old on the back for the toy run at the weekend - he's about 80kg and boy did I notice the difference compared to my partner who is considerably less than that (if I guess the number and get it wrong I'm in trouble - so not going there )
I used to have a saying that a pillion should always weigh less than the rider - that usually but not always meant that the guy wouldn't be on the back. Not so sure about that now as that doesn't factor in the type of bike (the amount of room, amount of suspension, the way the pillion effects the CofG etc) and the riders experience.
For that weekend run I should have (but didn't) wound up the suspension to a heavier load setting - this is probably more important on some machines than others but is worth doing if taking a pillion on a longish trip.
The biggest things with a heavier pillion seem to be maneuvering at low speeds and having a pillion "driving" from the rear - if the pillion starts to move or lean slightly earlier for a corner than you want to you really notice it if they are biggish - if they are bigger than you then it would be extremely annoying. A lot of guys would be able to see the road ahead whereas many female pillions can't - if the guy starts anticipating and moving you might have to stop and give him a spanking:2guns:

My bloke has totally ruled out ever going on the back of my bike. :( It's a shame because I think it would be fun, but it's his hang-up not mine! Mind you, he hates being on the back of any bike no matter who's riding so I suppose I shouldn't take it personally.

We were out riding with a bunch of friends a couple of weeks ago and one of the bikes broke down. The rider had to get a lift back to town on the back of another bike, so he could fetch a car and trailer. It was really funny watching these two guys on one bike. They have known each other for years and shared bunk rooms etc, but the guy on the back of the bike was desperately trying to not touch the guy on the front. Let alone putting his arms around his waist and holding on tight! Very funny sight.

I'v taken a guy out on the back of my bike before, and aside from dealing with the weight, it was annoying as he was a rider and shifted his weight as he would of on his bike around a bend, thus putting me off quiet a bit. The other two girl's i'v pillioned where a breeze compared to him as they just went with the flow. I think guys r just used to being in control. But if you and your partner have an agreement, take him out for a spin and see how you handle. It's not like you can't say no to him afterwards

Been on the back with the darling wife riding a couple of times. I make a crap pillion regardless of the gender of the rider since I ride and have to try and supress the urge to lean to suit my lines as opposed to whoever is riding. Not helped by the fact that I outmass the wife by a bit and am usually drunk if I'm on the pllion perch. If the other half is cool with it go for it, riding with pillions is different and enjoyable in it's own way. You have to be a lot smoother and less agressive on the braking and shifting side of things if you want to avoid head butts from the rear. It improves your riding and line choice in the long run, forget the stereotypes, the reason you see more male rider / female pillion combinations is that more guys than chicks ride, there are more women riding these days but I doubt the ratio will ever swing entirely the other way.

I took my first ever pillion today, my 16 year old (baby) brother!

He weighs a bit more than me and is at least 6 inches taller now too  he has pillioned before (on a cruiser  ) so he knew to sit nice and still & even though I was very aware that he was there it wasn't really a problem while we were actually riding, while we were crawling to the head of a queue at a stop sign and he was figgeting with his gloves was a different matter however. But thats ok, I just hit him :shit:

Yep, i've pillioned heaps of guys. Including hubby who taught me to ride. He would often sit on the back. One of my old mates was heaps bigger than me and he'd never ridden. Pillioning him was hard - takes a bit of getting used to, having a guy who's bigger than you sitting on the back and initially trying to steer! But you soon sort it out - i haven't spat a pillion off yet.

what about two chicks on a bike?

thats a nice thought...

I often take my sisters about as pillions and they really like it. They are awesome as they stay still and i can't tell they are there.

Nothing like the first pillion I took, which happened to be my partner. That made me think I didn't like taking pillions, but it was mainly the fact I wasn't used to the weight... and also that he tried to steer and was super tense because we ride quite differently. So no, he doesn't like not being in control of the machine.

Maybe it makes a difference if you rode first or pillioned first though. I reckon it's worse taking a rider as pillion. Wonder if the majority of guys do ride as well as their partners so don't like pillion? And those who don't ride are more relaxed so easier to take regardless of weight? Slyr wasn't a difficult pillion when I took him, that was before he got his bike...

I've had hubby on the back - prob looked a bit like what slimjim described as I'm a big girl so am bout 50% bigger than hubby. He's not that keen, mainly because he prefers to be in control of the handlebars.

Glad to see this thread because I have been wondering the same thing. My man is always on the back because he's blown his license. He's rides himself so at first he used to try and take control of the bike but after a couple of slaps round the head he learnt to behave himself, lol. He's 6'2" and I'm 5'3'' but doesn't seem to be too much of a problem. Must admit I do like to get out solo when I can. Different sort of ride.

kind of amusing if you reverse it...

Communication
If you don't have an intercom then establish a rule for various prods, signals and gestures before you set out, for instance:
Push the middle of his back = go faster, I'm bored
Bash on the right shoulder = take the next turn right
Bash on the left shoulder = take the next turn left
Bash around his head several times whilst gesticulating wildly = I'm a little nervous, would you slow down now please?
Lean forward and wave to the side of his helmet = slow down so I can tell you something
Pat his legs or a give big hug = I'm really enjoying the ride, thanks, keep going (though watch out, it could be misconstrued as "please stop in the nearest layby, I want sex")
Wave in front of his face when passing a sign = I want to go there (e.g. service station, cafe, fine restaurant, Paris) - just make sure you don't obscure his vision.

lol love this. My partner and I had the same left/right signals, never needed to tell him to go faster, he did that enough by himself. And if it was too much for me I'd just hold on really tight and close my eyes. Guess he figured out that when it felt like I was squeezing the life out of him it was time to slow down. It was nice when he reached back and held my hand for periods of time as well.

Have a wonderful friend who 18 years ago I would pillion him till he got his licence. Now years later when we ride since i am not riding a road bike, I pillion behind him and we swap because he knews I love riding. What a really cool guy. I have a lot of respect for him riding and in life.

another guy I used to ride with would not pillion his ego was so big and he had ridden road, offroad, raced, competed, etc. Well ride behind a woman. :weird: and that was him I have meet others who have done these and i am sure would not mind at all. Just for a matter of interest next time i see the guys at a meet I will ask them whether they would mind. :lol

But with how i look at it, it depends with their attitude, riding ability and bike (as in safety). And would expect the same from them with me. And I must feel comfortable so would have a try with them on first like around a carpark or up and down the road.
If he is willing who gives a stuff. We are riding because both people enjoy it and are spending time together.

I woudl like to take my partner as a pillion but so far we have only been on his, with me on the back. The problem is that I am 5'2'' and he is 6'... my bike had to have a lowering linkage manufactured for the swingarm just so I could touch the ground well enough to ride it!

I have a question for anyone who is knowledgeable on this: Is there any advice you can give on taking a heavier and much bigger pillion from a rider's perspective? Generally everyone who wants to go on the back is bigger than me and it does worry me a little.... If they are balanced, it's OK right?

buellbabe
25th November 2009, 11:14
My advice is very simple. if it bothers you then don't do it. Its your bike and your choice, don't let yourself be pressured by what other people may tell you or say to you.

My personal rule is no pillion bigger than myself. I have tried pillioning people larger than myself and decided 'bugger that!' So I have removed the rear pegs. They only go back on if one of my guy friends is pillioning ME...and wow! thats a freaky feeling. Pillioning on your own bike... LOL

Oh and BTW I'm only 5'3" (on tippy toes ha ha ha) so most people are bigger than me!

take him for a ride around the block, if you both feel ok with that go a bit ferther and so on, I dont think size matters as long as you feel ok and have full control
