i remember reading somewhere that is illegal to deface a plate, its technially illegal to drill holes in it to mount it.
but not allowed to modify it in anyway

not sure about cutting the plate itself i have moved mine and cleaned up the rear quite a bit.
you do need a reflector ( have seen some reflector head screws holding plates but none i liked the look of ). you also need a number plate light, which can be moved to suit plate position if you move plate.

In short, legally speaking no you cannot modify the plate:
Section 5, Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986 Using, etc, unlicensed motor vehicle or motor vehicle that does not have registration plates affixed in the prescribed manner ($200 fine)
Section 17, Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986Unauthorised, deceptive, or obscured registration plates or unauthorised licence, etc ($200 fine)
You could easily be ticketed by a bored cop on either of the above and I think there is another similar regualtion but I couldn't find it.
In practice though most cops will turn a blind eye to any slight chopping of a plate in order to succesfully fit it to the bike as long as it doesn't blatantly contravene the regs.
Sarge's plate is probably a little ...ahem... extreme in the eyes of the law, though I'm fairly certain he's not too concerned.... lol

correct...
You probably won't get pulled up for it... but when you get pulled up for something else, think of it as a not-free bonus... $200 pingers for it.

That refers to "intending to decieve" as to the identity. Simply reducing the size of the plate has not changed the original "identifying marks"(#'s & letters) at all.

If a cop was having a bad morning I'm pretty sure that a modified number plate would come under the heading of 'Unauthorised registration plate'.
Regardless, the fact remains that a plate that is modified in any way is grounds enough for any cop to pull you over and harass you for it at best and ticket you at worst.

There's a twat on a cruiser in Palmerston North who has his folded up so it's virtually horizontal. I so can't wait for him to get a ticket for it!
