I think science and the human body is amazing!
Who would have thought that you could grow and harvest human parts to replace old and knackerd mechanics?
I think it is great that the Stem Cell research has succeeded in this area, to give someone the opportunity to extend their life. Individual choice really.
Just look at what doctors can do with the humble placenta with sick babies being born into this world.
It is a worthy debate and as a human, we have come such a long way.

How ever cloning is another subject all together, which is aided from Stem Cells. That gives me the heebie geebies.

I'll have another pancreas thanks; make it one that works this time.

BUT BUT BUT ....

isnt this Genetic Engineering???

heres what i find Ironic...

suppose science comes up with a way to cure AIDS, Cancer, Alzheimer's, Pedophilia, Boy Bands, etc .. and all they have to do is a bit of GE

would NZ refuse on moral ( whatever) grounds or would you guys sell out and benefit from the science?

me too .. i mean how would this affect the Life Insurance industry.. would they cover you for Full Replacement Value??

would you be able to opt for a higher deductable for a cheaper rate ? (big ears, acne and a small dick)

what about paying a higher rate and getting the Tom Cruise McValue upgrade?

isnt this Genetic Engineering???

If anything it's the opposite. Certainly the only viable alternative, it's the ultimate objective of any rational health option.

If it's broke, replace it with an exact copy, identical right down to the DNA.

Wouldn't need to sell out, I'm not agin' it in the first place.

And for those that are I'd suggest it'd be a remarkable person who'd refuse to take advantage of valid research if the return represented life itself.

However, as above, this technology ain't genetic engineering, there's no tweaking or splicing going on here.

Can you arrange one for my son too please? He is far too young to not have a functioning pancreas.

I feel for you Mom. Lifelong dependence on insulin is tough on kids. Still I'd have it any day over what my oldest son has.

Yep diabetes is the pits for sure. Something very unfair to have to monitor you blood glucose levels and inject yourself 6 odd times a day just to keep yourself alive.

I can still hear him saying to me when he was first admitted to hospital, glucose pump in one arm, insulin pump in the other "well there goes my binge drinking days".

He does it well though, his main complaint is not being able to have a sleep in. What is with having to get up and have something to eat, so you can go back to bed for a sleep in anyway?...LOL

I reckon they will have a cure for it within his lifetime.

riffer and mom I feel for you guys.As parents we (generally) do the best we can for our kids and when they get sick the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming.I once swore at god and demanded that he transfer my daughter's problem to me or strike me down dead.He/she'it did neither.Just another reason I doubt his/her/it's existance.

Has anybody seen that show on TV about the EasyJet check-in counter?

Well it seems that they don't just specialise in bad customer service, they want to try and kill their customers as well.

tweak a few genes..save a few lives...

I wouldn't expect anything in the near future, I mean its a hell of a lot easier to grow a pipe (or ear) but the techniques just aren't there yet to successfully grow organs (such as the heart or whatever).

mate.. it wont be far off....skin is an organ.. they have grown that several hundred thousand times..the complex structures are not that hard with a few tweaks...

I highly doubt it, since a complex organ (such as the heart) has a lot more cell types than just one or two. They may be able to grow something that looks like a heart, but having it fully function is another story.

Cute.

It's true that there's no risk-free GE products, however, some forget that humans have been tweaking other species for a fookin' long time. We've had problems with some of the results but some of them are responsible for making our current lifestyle possible.

Some strands of Nanotech research make me way more twitchy...
