I have several manufacturers vids that I would like to stick on you tube but they are over 10mins long and in wmv format.
I have flip for mac that allows me to play them - but it watermarks them when I try and edit.
It's a $50 licence to stop it - which I'll pay - unless anyone has a better solution maybe ?

OS/X ? Build ffmpeg from source and enable everything, then run it with the FFMpegX front end - much easier than the commandline.

Will VLC convert them? Too busy to check right now but I'm sure I used it at home.

Many of VLC's codecs are provided by the libavcodec library from the FFmpeg project.

Nice info thanks - too steep a learning curve for the job though.

Don't use YouTube? Try www.vimeo.com or www.blip.tv

yeah true - but then I have a channel with near half a million vids watched and a building subscriber base - and all that has its own sort of momentum.

If VLC can play a file, then it can also transcode it.
Just fire up VLC and select the Streaming/Transcoding Wizard.

Ditch the mac and use the freeYoutube Downloader (http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/), which can convert all sorts of video formats. It's free, but I think I mentioned that :)

Ditch the mac
If you cant contribute anything sensible - save the electricity. :-)

:) Nice one Dave
Of course I only meant ditch the mac in order to convert the vid, YouTube downloader doesn't work on a mac. My wife's laptop is one of those mac things, as much as I dislike them I can't argue that it just does things without any dramas...
I've re-read your original post though and see you are wanting to trim or edit it a bit rather than convert ... at the risk of being flogged you could use Windows Movie Maker ... (runs and hides)

Just fire up VLC and select the Streaming/Transcoding Wizard.
I've never had any luck with the Transcoding process -- it'll always pus out on me.
I just use VLC as my bulletproof Player.
The only way I can suggest is to use Mac The Ripper with the original source DVD.
WMV to QT seems a lot like trying to get the Harley Boys to wave to ... well, anyone.
Edit: on re-reading -- If you've got 95% of the solution...I'd spend the sly Fiddy and be done

Yes - I'm hearing you - and Matt_.
But then my son Matt was just around with his new laptop and it has a video editing app installed.
I'll borrow it over the weekend. :-)
It's great when your son gets cool shit you can borrow.

No you misunderstood.
The
>>king shit in all things<<
part is, however, accurate.
And furthermore - it's actually windows shizzle I am dealing with here. YA KNOW!!!

I'm on my 8th Bourbon. Three JD, 5 wild turkey.
Saturday morning is looking miss-able and co-pilot is making noises about the 'weekend off together'.
will log in if the mist clears.
