Easy enough on my 2 stroke dirt bike, just give a handful and up she comes but...what's the secret to popping the wheel on a hyper street bike , simple as popping the clutch , same thing bigger bike ? Wanna give my shiny black girl some front wheel air time ...if only but once. :nono:

A classmate at school started off his biking like that. His brother's instructions for his first ever motorbike ride were similar:
"Now - twist the throttle till that needle there is on that red bit there.":innocent:
Let the clutch out." :shit:

You'd have to wonder how someone could do that to his own bike.

step one-drop the clutch in first gear & if that doesn't do it for ya
step two- then push down on the forks & on the rebound while standing up...yank on the bars with full throttle & if that doesn't! then take ya hand off ya dick & try step two again with clutch,if all else fails i'll take ya for a double on

something like that. Im not really flash at wheelies. The 9 helps me out a WHOLE lot. I like the clutch cause it is much more predictable to what the bike does.
A nicely timed wheelie is fucking mint. end of story.
try this and try not to hurt anything when trying.

Firstly. Find somewhere where no one is watching so you dont feel like you have to impress anyone. (might pay to take a mate along incase you do fuck it up)
Find a long striaght piece of road that has plenty of runoff. Keep your focus at the end of the road.
Ride along in 4th or 5th (so there is no way you will wheelie) and ride at really low revs. Dip the clutch and accelerate rapidly as the clutch comes in and out and KEEP ACCELERATING. The 9 redlines at 12. I might ride at 3000 and dip the clutch to 6000 and keep accelerating. Remember to keep your focus ahead of you on a point far away.
Once you get the techinque then do it in 3rd. then 2nd. The 9 will pop up in 3rd but not very impressive.. just kind drift the front wheel off the ground. In 2nd it will get a nice wheelie you can ride out for a couple of hundred meters. In first it is quite violent pickup so it will depend on your bike to the gear and the feel of it.
once the front lifts then back off the throttle a very little ammount. But keep accelerating. Then it is a balancing act you can control from very minimal throttle movements.
Once the bike gets to the point of landing the wheelie (it will come down) to stop it crashing to the ground accelrate again.
Practice is the key and taking it slowly and get the feeling of the front in the air.
Snapping the throttle closed will result in lots-o-pain in your front end and wrists.

Wheelies make you a better rider.

Choose 1st or 2nd (pref 2nd for starters)
Roll on the throttle till the engine starts to deliver good power then roll off/on quickly and it should start to pull up.
If its a struggle give the bars a push down/pull up at the same time as rolling off/on the throttle.

Chrislost is really good at wheelies too by the way

Thanks Westie, I worded my Thread wrong, I know anything can pull the wheel up in a low gear but I was meaning at speed, my mistake.

sosman
24th November 2008, 18:34
Another tip.... is find a nice long hill, cause when going up a hill it uses less effort to get a bike lifted & also when ya on the flat if ya don't get the bike high enough...you will keep accelerating to fast(cause ya wont be at the level yet to try & change gear in a wheelie),so a hill tends to keep the speed down while you learn to try & find the balance point(which is that horrible gut feeling u get at first haha!, If ya keep at it, that horrible gut feeling will go away... & use the force!

748 is really difficult to wheelie. Dry clutch means my usual clutch wheelies are a big no no....it either makes horrid grinding noises and judders or the front end comes up so hard you get smacked by the screen. 1st gear, roll off slightly at 8,000 RPM then on the gas hard and she pulls a beautifully controlled throttle wheelie. The rev limiter hits hard before serious height is gained and it just won't change up to 2nd.

Long wheelbase, very long 1st gear, suspension seems to soak it up and the power doesn't really come on until the tacho needle is 2/3rds of the way round.

Thats it, crank down hard on the front brake....a good amount of panic :shit:to go with the action helps...
Not sure who got the biggest surprise at my first stoppie, me or the prat:bash: in the hilux who pulled out in front of me , saw me and stopped,:shit::shit::shit: and then watched me coming at his door up on my front wheel...:shit: In such circumstances, stoppies come naturally.

It all happened effing quick, released the brake, back came down swerved around in front of him and just bloody lucky nothing was coming the other way.

70kmh's, second gear , wind it on and clutch it ?

Umm...read the stunting sticky...it is actually how I normally do a wheelie (first bike was a gp100 and the only way to bring up the front was with the clutch) and the advice is actually really good. Clutch wheelies are certainly the way to go. Start small (1st gear, just a bit of height) and work from there.
..
..
It just isn't doable on the ducati dry clutch, although I dare say the more modern dry clutches may be a different kettle of fish.
