A biker had an "oops" on the Southern Motorway this evening.
He's fine, nil injuries.
He was lane splitting, fucked it up and made love to a car that wasn't prepared for a lane invasion by a bike.
So.
Who was at fault - the bike for lane splitting in peak hour traffic, or the car for not seeing the innocent biker going about his business making temporary lanes?

Did the car driver change lanes without indicating or simply move within his/her lane?
PS - You ok?

Haha - wasn't me! (I'm too lame to split...)
As far as the info I got from the scene goes, it was a bad merge by the biker.

If you want to lane split the entire onus is on you to ensure your safety.
From a personal safety point of view yes.
If you are in their lane and they move into you then yes.
If you are in a lane and a car changes from their lane into yours without indicating or checking first then legally muddy at best NO.
But there's no point in being dead right.

Donor, you getting Mrs. Donor's wooden spoon out for a bit o' stirring? Tsk tsk. Mwahahahaha, love it.
I'm on the side of lane splitting being done entirely at your own risk. If there were separate little skinny bike dedicated lanes inbetween the car lanes, 'specially designed for bikes to split the traffic, then that might be a different story. (Even then cars would no doubt hog that space too!) But short of that I find it hard to accept bike riders "blaming" cars when we squeeze up inbetween them like a stinky dog trying to get between the two occupants of a bed... but I digress....where was I? Oh dear.

Wooden spoon?
What's that? Some sort of instrument from that mythical area of the house where the food mysteriously appears from? :D
Not at all - it's more that I have had a few close calls with lane splitters this week, including one passing me while I had the bells and whistles operating on the work vehicle... seems I was only doing my job to make passage for him/her.
And today, I've witnessed so much more senseless riding/driving and hell even pedestrian bollocks, that I think someone has doubled the dose of Gene-o-kleen in the water supply!
And dare I say it, I have had a gutsfull of people managing to make any incident that they or anyone else have had on two wheels sound like the fault of anyone but the person actually riding the bike.
I dunno... I'm either getting old or I'm way too sober for a Friday night...

+1. I lane split like a nana, and regularly make way for the guys who want to travel between the cars at a faster pace.
And this thread is exactly the reason why I 'dawdle'.
Yeah its a 1:whatever chance of being hit, but the pain of recuperation sucks, and the Physio ain't no picnic.

Well that was stupid, your flashing lights clear the way quite nicly and all you need to do is tuck in behind to get a clear run on the motorway, no point in passing.

I dunno... all those cars diving in behind the emergency vehicle... not the safest place to be
A few mornings ago, a police ute headed up the Southern into the city... kept a constant distance from it all the way in, threading my way through traffic. :sweatdrop

Yeah if you're going to be a smartass, then be it on your head. I'm all for being a smartass, but my fucked ankle still really hurts and my bent bike still isn't mobile yet, sooo ya rolls ya dice and ya pays ya money. Smartass today or not? Your call, and your consequence, but you can't not choose.

I must admit, I tucked in behind an ambo making a nice path along wiri station road earlier this week. Stayed behind him but, didn't try and pass him.
Couldn't follow him through the red lights though. Thought about it for a second. My defence to the fuzz would be "sorry occifor, I was just trying to find out if Donor was driving that ambulance up there, bastard owes me money!!" He doesn't really owe me btw

I'd like to know the answer to this one.
Prolly need a bit more info on the accident though.
Last I knew it was legal to lanesplit to the right, as in to the right of the vehicle, but still to the left of the line. As this is (was?) a legal move, you'd guess if you got knocked off doing it it would be the other vehicle at fault.
BUT, when was the last time you saw a cage (or bike) left enough in their lane to let ya past to the right?

Correct!
Story last weekend, crash on the northern side of the Harbour Bridge, all cars at a stand still, bikes filtering at speed (cos the cars are stoped, its safer right?) and with emergancy services making there way to the scene from the city. Bloke telling me this was in the line of cars and likes bikes. But was appalled at the way in which the bikes were filtering. It was hot and some car owners were opening thier doors.
It can be done with ease, but shouldn't be frowned upon if something goes wrong.

It is hard to find forums on the net with a really cool friendly atmosphere like this one, it would be a same to lose that. Not that I should be saying anything or putting my nose in where its not wanted as I am new.

They actually do this on some freeways in the US of A. Works really well and from what I heard the constabulary get very grumpy if cars invade the lane in any way whatever (especially when Mr CHIPS is occupying the lane..)
