gloves please,

Im a trucky for a job and a biker for life.

Why is it that when im at work i am constantly seeing bikers without gloves this season, this to me is unaccaptable around town and yet it has infected our open roads heavily as well. I know im anal about wearing the correct gear but if you dont think you might come off, regardless of whose fault it might be, then why wear any of it. Gloves aint the half of it really but its a pet hate of mine. I hope everyone one on kiwibiker wears there gloves 100% of the time, and for those who dont please dont call me to wipe your arse after a crash, wear your gloves and then for those occasions that may never happen you give yourself a chance of pooing in private. safe riding everyone

I doubt they would be able to call you to wipe their arse as they wouldn't have any hands left to be able to use a phone to do so. Dont understand any motorcyclist riding without the appropiate protective gear on. If they value their lives at all they would wear it no questions asked. It really doesnt matter how good of a rider you are as accidents can happen to the best of us even when its no our fault. There are all types of riders as well as drivers on our roads today and you only have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time for an accident to occur. It only takes a few seconds for your life to change. Like you said come on all you motorcyclists out there Please wear the right protective gear while riding. Aint your lives worth it?. as I know mine is.

I once wiped my bottom with tissue paper instead of toilet paper. Definitely not an ATGATT move, but I'm still here.

You can control a small percentage of your own fate. Do a good job of that and waste not the unheard, unseen lecture.

Gloves are the one I really don't understand - I mean I kind of get it when people talk about their bike gear being too bulky, too expensive, too hot, blah blah blah...

I just bought a new pair of summer gloves from the Motomail outlet store. $29 so hardly expensive!

When I take off my helmet I tuck them into the helmet and forget about them. So it's not like they're awkward to carry around!

AND gloves look great on a biker so it's not like people will be worried about their image.

So what's the problem? A cheap, convenient and cool-looking way to protect a VERY IMPORTANT part of your body. Why wouldn't you wear them?

I usually wear gloves, but there are odd times (like when I went out one lunchtime and got down to my bike to find I'd left my gloves behind) that I don't bother.
However (but!) in the first few years of motorcycle ownership, I wore gloves only if my hands were cold.
In the several times I've crashed, my helmet has contacted the road only once, and my hands only a couple of times.
When I was yound and relatively bulletproof, I had little need for protective gear. However, I'm more conscious of pain now, and I need my hands to make a living.

See if anyone can find a photo online of degloved hands (medical term) following a bike accident.

Plenty of degloving photos out there (VERY not nice...) but I didn't find any specific to m/c accidents and I'd be interested to see one.

In the several times I crashed in the old days, my helmet never contacted the road and I sustained no significant injuries to my (often ungloved) hands. But like you, I was young, bulletproof and stupid (you didn't say stupid, did you?). I don't plan on wearing out my luck and I wear (almost) ATGATT.

Anyone remember that horrid brown shiny loo paper you sometimes got in public toilets? (not that I frequent those, I'll have you know....) don't know how it was supposed to do anything as it was completely non-absorbent! Eeewww.
I have only ridden once (very short trip) sans gloves and even tho it was nice weather my little handies got so cold I resolved never to do it again. Brrrr. Am I a wuss?

Gloves are very important. I'll put gloves on even when riding around the block in my shorts and t-shirt to dry the bike off after washing it.

I learnt my lesson the hard way - no gloves, leather waistcoat.. 2 mins from work to home. Sun strike and a car led to me turning up to my sisters wedding with no skin on both palms and up both arms to the elbows. You'll never catch me without a jacket, gloves and boots as a bare min..

Makes me feel queesy every time i see it. I think the biggest culprits are the scooter riders. I guess they think they arent going fast enough?? I have seen heaps of riders already going past my place without anything but a helmet.

If nothing else i would wear a helmet and gloves...whats the first thing you put down in a crash to protect yourself...?

What cracks me up is these people riding with Fingerless gloves  why bother?

Another is the ones you see riding in summer with helmet, jacket, gloves and shorts - what are they saying? Do they think the skin on their legs is tougher than the skin on their arms or what?

I saw a guy riding erratically along Great North Road the other day in shorts, T-shirt & jandals. When I caught up to him at the lights I realised he was texting! I laughed out loud and said I've never seen anyone texting and riding before. He kindly explained that's why he can't wear gloves to ride... you can't text while wearing gloves!

By the way, he was not riding a scooter. It was a gixxer!

Hey, I've got the exact same gloves! (Red, not blue.)

The knuckle armour on each is about halfway between the state of the left and right ones in your pair.

I wore them for the last time at Taupo on Sunday - noticed that the pad on the left index finger was worn right through, I could see pink skin when I put them on...

Time to shop for a new pair of glubs this weekend.

A silly question, if I may?
What sort of distance did they travel in contact with the tarmac??
I have the same gloves and have been looking for a replacement pair for a while, but finding a pair that fit like these is darned difficult.

No no no, you must remember that riding a motorbike is meant to be cool, wearing gloves is just gay. <_<

I saw some dickhead on a litre bike with shorts, sneakers, a t shirt and a helmet on. Well done cumstain. :nono:

I would never leave the house without my leather jacket, helmet, gloves, and boots. At the moment I'm using kevlar jeans, which aren't the best things in the world, but soon will be upgrading to leather pants.

That's not so bad - at least he had a good reason why gloves are not suitable for him.

For me:
My minimum is a full faced helmet, gloves, boots, Dragin Jeans and leather jacket. I wear these things even on the hottest summer day. For cold weather & longer rides I also have the option of adding a back protector and either cordura or leather pants.
I ride a scooter, but it is 400cc and I ride at least the speed limit most of the time. Even at 50-60kph in a 50kph zone I would hate to think of what the road would do to gloveless hands!

I don't even like to think about open faced helmets. T-shirt & shorts are not appropriate motorcycle gear. If you value your skin you don't ride with it exposed.

Im tried of trying to get people to wear the gear

I never try to get people to do anything - I give an opinion and people are free to ignore it at their own risk. If someone rides without gloves and comes off then it is no skin of MY hands.

I have winter gloves and summer gloves and wear one pair or the other (depending on temperature). I would advise everyone to wear the gear, but if you don't then please remember - often people are the author of their own misfortune, sometimes it is possible to take sensible precautions and reduce the risk of very painful injuries. I ain't going to come 'round to dress all you fools, make your own decisions and live with them!

I have this crazy hope that someone will at some stage reflect on my advise and wear the gear, then be saved some skin in an accident. Just remember, it's better to wear the gear and not need it then to need it and not be wearing it.

You would never catch me in anything less than kevlar lined jeans, boots, jacket, helmet and gloves.I only ever use the jeans for commuting, the instant that a ride is suggested I go home for leather first.

It's only hot when your not moving.

BTW. main street Whangarei yesterday 86 or 7 cbr600 helmet not strapped up,bare feet, nylon shorts and wifebeater. SOOO COOOL.

Dont get me wrong, i am a ATGATT person, and i dont think i have ever ridden at more than 10kph with shorts on but i am mearly saying i would rather have skin grafts over the rest of my body (well the bits that would get roadrash anyway) than lose use of my hands.

And also remember that if you are carefull there is every possibility tht you will not crash.

Well as a not-so-bulletproof teen I was trashed from behind by a car and was wearing no gloves and shorts. Still have some road rash up one leg 20 yrs later but strangely there was not a mark on my hands.

I am generally ATGATT now except with two exceptions:

1) I work in the islands a bit and ride a scooter with no helmet and gloves ... I would never do this everwhere else ...
2) cycle nearly every day in fox mtn gloves (fingerless) and hit 68kph down the local descent - but there's only so much gear you can wear cycling and not being trapped under a 200kg+ motorbike does make it more likely you'll bounce clear and get less gravel rash in some cases ...

Even so seeing people on bikes without the appropriate geat makes me mad.

Gloves and helmet are two areas i will never skimp on (AGV and Dririder summer for me) also a wise man once told me, get gloves that fit, and do the strap up EVERY time u put them on, as they can rip off your hands when sliding down the tar.
I occasionally dont wear gloves or jacket, but thats just for strops round the block, i once fell off at 140ish in shorts and t-shirt in my youth, still have scars on my hands, arms, back and arse to this day, its a good reminder of what not to do.
I had to get tar seal scrubbed out of all my rash, and tweezered out of the gaping wound in my hand.....not fun
will see if i have any photos floating around.

Oh and just to continue the feeling towards scooter riders  seriously what goes through those guys and girls heads?

I made this point - I can outpace 50cc mopeds on slight downhill gradients on my pushie.
BIG difference is that if I stack gettign tangled up with a pushie is not remoptely the same as with even a 100kg scooter. This is what will cause much damage.

I would say that you can still get pretty fucked up and lose a lot of skin. I think the biggest difference is that on a pushie you just CANNOT wear all the gear because you would probably pass out with heat stroke and crash - making wearing all the gear more dangerous than not wearing it.

I guess thats why I dont see many (if any) scooter riders wearing any safety gear. One helmet and acres of bare skin... Because they might pass out ???... mmmm

Nup - people on motorbikes or motorscooters that are not wearing the appropriate gear do so because of a lack of thinking. They don't think about the consequences of a spill or take the potential dangers too lightly.
