Fair enough but I still think it should be awarded to a member of the winning team.

Maybe I interpret "Man of the Match" to be "most valuable player" as in the person that most helps his team win.... I guess you are intepreting it as the best player on the field notwithstanding whether his team wins or not.

well...one player alone can not win a game for a entire team!! But one player alone can standout in his performance amoungst his peers no matter the score...
another question...how would 'you' choose man of the match if its a draw?

would there be a draw? or would there be golden point?
i'm not sure how the world cup rules compare to the NRL.
NRL man of the match always goes to the winning team.
i guess it's just some way for the aussies to console themselves by giving it to the LOSING team

I predict he'll blame the run of easy matches up to the final not giving his team the build up they needed compared with the Kiwis playing England in the semi-final.

Turned the telly on we were 12 nil down, thought......'here we go again'.
Very pleasantly surprised!!!
Great to se the OZ shafted in their own back yard.
It would of been an awesome experience there, as we went to State of O number 2 this year there and the ground is simply amazing when full.
The pubs just up the road from the ground would of been filled with tears, not beers.

Good game this morning with the Blacks

Why don't the NZRFU get rid of Graham Henry and replace him with Steve Kearney ????
At least he can coach a team that actually wins the world cup....

Hmmm...yeah, But........theres Wayne Bennett's influence and I reckon that would be quite significant.

Good game Kiwis. Highlights just how good Steven Price is. Aus/Warriors are a 20 point worse team without him.
And just how good Wayne Bennet is. Go Saints!
Disappointing, but hopefully it also revitalises the game internationally - like when Eng won the ashes.
The bit I saw with Sticky Stewart interviewed - he said they were 'out muscled'.

Watched it AFTER clicking on teletext and seeing the result, chaneel surfed shortly after and found replay on maori tv,was bloody good time around 46mins and 22-20 after Aussie had just scored, even better was the comments about the kiwis penalty try,bit dicey and tough call to make.
For once the team seemed to believe in themselves, even when 12 points down, was good to hear the jersey handing out guy was Mark Graham, must have given good advice, well done.

yeah... yet on paper, the aussies had their usual team full of stars (and as per usual, could have fielded 3-4 teams of absolute stardom),and we had our usual scrape together of who was available, and who was not injured.
by rights,we shouldn't have won that game, but it was a mammoth effort from the kiwis, and their coaching staff.
i must say, that i've REALLY enjoyed watching hohaia play this year, particularly in the world cup.
i think he deserves much more credit, and has had the best season of his career to date.
it really annoyed me when an out of form wade mckinnon came back from injury, and they put lance on the bench, when hohaia was playing much more consistent football. i was also glad that brent webb was out of the world cup injured,as his inclusion in the team would have relegated lance once again to the bench.
IMO,he should have been player of the year.he's got so much to offer.

Well I think in the sports where I have formed my opinion of what constitutes "man of the Match" i.e. American sports such as baseball and Basketball then there are no draws. Even in League I understand you can't draw these days.
I agree that one player cannot win the game in a team sport but MVP is the player that contributes the most to the victory on the day.... or over the season in the case of the Major League Baseball MVP.

I honestly didn't know that Rugby League had a World Cup.
they haven't had one since 2000,and i think the one before that was 1995.
this one was different to any others i've seen.more teams in it then previous years.
but i didn't like the way they had the top three teams in the same pool.what's up with that shit???

Re man of the match award, apparentely it had to be named/awarded by the 70 minute, the panel had obviously a change of mind due to kiwis fightback, but were told the first choice was it,seems bloody hard on likes of Hohaia.Should make Slater an honorary islander the way he chucked the ball infield, shades of warriors this year.
