MarkS & I spent the last 3 days exploring some of the 4WD tracks around Reefton. We have a combined age of 100yrs & we both suffer from RSI so it was never going to be a race. But we still surprised ourselves with how well we coped with the knarly bits. Mark rode his well equiped KLR650 while I took the DT230. My camera batteries quickly went flat so Mark became the official photographer, which mean't many stops for that essential pic. This suited me well because I have no real idea on how to properly use a camera anyway. However we both appreciate history of the old mines plus the stunning scenery & tracks to get to them.
We were sometimes limited by carrying too much gear plus the lack of bash plate on the DT was a concern (starter is exposed underneath), so we erred on the side of caution on two occasions where turning back looked the pussy but still better option in the circumstances.
I met up with Mark in Murchison after he had ridden down via the Mangatapu, where we crashed with some friends for the Tuesday night. Wed morning we rode the New Creek track from Lyell to as far as the Mackley River, then in the afternoon we rode most of the Waitahu track.
Thursday was spent enjoying the Big River ride then Friday we tackled Napolean Hill. This was the highlight even though it was the most difficult. The hill descent is bloody steep, rutted & no turning back - we were told 4wd's & quads often have to winch up it. I drowned the DT & had all the drama of getting it going again. Valuable lesson - when riding rivers one should carry enough oil for a change out. But the tunnel rides & gorge scenery still made it all very worth while. Getting lost for two hours in Mosquito Creek down to the Grey River sapped our energy for any more rides that day - continuous boulders that were slippery when wet or could pinch a tube when dry. Saturday back to Murchison via Maruia Saddle, where Mark headed to Picton via Porika etc.
Some of my few pics:
1: the bikes on New Creek track - many interesting side diversions to pylons
2: the Mackley - next time with a bash plate
3: hitch hiker in the Waitahu - I'm surprised there were any wildlife around after the noise of the KLR Jardine pipe
4: the odd bog

1: miles of puddles to ride through - hot days so quite refreshing
2: the KLR foot peg saga
3: note how low the adapter plates are - everytime they hit a rock they cut the bolts. The instructions did say "not for off road use", so we eventually took them off.
4: Big River scenery. A lot of the track is quite steep & rocky but not difficult & great to ride. Very popular with 4WD's but we didn't see another soul. Well worth the trip just to see the unique gold mine winch steam engines, still relatively complete.

Pic of a W650 looking more Triumph than a T100 could. Owner was from near ChCh & had just been on his first KB Wednesday night ride the day before.

It was interesting comparing the DT & KLR - quite different bikes but both having advantages & disadvantages. The DT was certainly the lighter & more nimble (the XF would have killed me) but it did seem to get a lung full of water way too easy (OK, I admit that bit was quite boatable). B&B bash plate arrived while we were away so that issue now resolved.
But what was really noticable was the KLR is far more stable on slimey, slippery boulders - quite important in those West coast rivers & creeks (we were both running EO9 rear). It was hard enough trying to walk on the stuff in our MX boots, so it's easy to see why the fisherman use those didymo friendly felt soled waders. I'm guessing weight & wider tyre for grip plus recluse clutch gave the KLR the advantage here. Next time I might fit an EO9 to the front too, instead of the full knobbly - getting grip on the rocks was just as important as in mud.
Even though following the KLR through the old diversion tunnels was deafening, that Jardine pipe still sounds awesome. In fact dare I say it sounds better than any DR650 I've heard???

A big thanks to Coonyer's Adv route web site for helping with the track options. We have been able to clarify some issues with Napoleon Hill access, which we will pass on to Ryan to up-date. Plus a local contractor has offered to show us a few more good tracks that aren't on maps but quite suitable for adventure / dual purpose bikes. He has even offered to ferry bikes accross deep water with his 4WD!!
Reefton town is still in a time warp but the locals are friendly & helpful. It's a great base for adv rides with reasonably priced digs & has a decent garage for repairs plus at least 3 pubs & a couple of excellent coffee shops.
We look forward to going back to finish what we started......

Don't dare.
I'll break your knees.

It should sound a bit more muted and deeper with the insert in.

What if I told you a farmer showed us a vertical mine shaft that he wants cavers to explore - changed your mind yet?

What if I told you a farmer showed us a vertical mine shaft that he wants cavers to explore - changed your mind yet? With the caveat that mines are man-made holes prone to collapse - unlike caves - I may not wait for your next trip!! :msn-wink:

Nice one guys. Sounds like you had a good time exploring the place. Keen to hear more about the Napoleon hill gates etc. They weren't there last time I went through.

Cheers R

I would require very little prompting to go back again - maybe Feb?
