Who would like to see a forum for us owners of 'mature' bikes.
I brought this up in the 'touring and bikes you use' area as well as Off Topic, site discussion.
I know there are lots of you guys with older Japanese, British, American and Italian bikes and are just hanging out for a place to swap stories and info.

I have asked Mr Trousers and he says if there is enough support it will be concidered.

If your wondering what constitutes a classic...
Paul summed it up with something like this:

" only when you love them beyond economic sense"

Everything with two or three wheels is included.

Have a read of the threads.

Ooooh yes! A poll!
That would be really pretty with all those coloured bars...

Now the NZ250.... I think the purists would term that a post classic, but then it depends whose rules you use. Can't find anything on classic motorcycles but I would assume that the classification system is similar to cars and there is some dispute there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_car
I think for our purposes Paul's definition listed at the beginning of the post should cover it :)

Have a read of the threads.

I used to restore alot of old Japanese motorsickles before my accident and once we move I plan on doing it again even though I cannot ride. If this site does not have a classic/vintage section then there is seriously something wrong here. You have both my vote and Coasters vote on this!

I was in the middle of doing the poll bit ( was not sure on how too) when my pc crashed....as it lives in the garage and sucks dust!!!!
I don't seem to be able to add it as an edit..

Don't be put off by the term classic...its just a name.

Pauls defination is the best so far.

Purests are well catered for elsewhere on the net, I'm more for the real world bikes, that are ridden and not garage queens.
As for vintage, pre war, post war, classic, post classic, and other labels .....I'll leave that to the car and bike clubs.

I have a Darmah I bought in Sydney in '86...at rallies the SS guys would not bother with me ( I did shower ...), so I hung out with the Jap bike owners. I'm not into bike snobbery, I'm into tinkering and riding and enjoying the company of other like minded people. I was at a swap meet this morning and had a good laugh with Ken McIntosh and other swappers, found a clutch tool for my Ducati, and exchanged BMW stories with some other /5 owners.

Lol. By that measure I'm riding a short-stroke 1953 Norton Manx.

Actually, while we have the correct sort of audience, what was the first 4-valve OHC single? Didn't take them until the XL250, did it? Did the Brits do one?

Of course bloody yes.

Ixion
23rd November 2008, 22:49
Just so. The only real definition of a "classic" is that it is a bike which elicites the question "But what do you see in it?"

Some bikes, their riders ride them because they are very fast. Or have excellent handling. Or lots of chrome and the rider can pretend he is a bad-ass. And so on.

But a classic? The objective observer would argue - "By today's standards it is lamentably slow. And the handling is dodgy. And it leaks oil, is noisey and not very reliable. And parts are hard to get. You could buy a modern bike that does everything better. Why persist in riding that old thing?"

To which the only answer is "Yes, well, all true, But , I don't know, there is something about it, it just kind of grabs me. I don't care if it's slow, if the handling is crap, if parts are hard to get, if it breaks down sometimes, if it doesn't have ponce factor. I just like it". That, to me , defines the classic. The actual age is irrelevant. I would argue that a brand new Ural would be a classic. Just because no sane person would actually want to ride one. But I would.

Pretty sure that Honda were the first with the XL250, plenty of OHC engines prior but I can't recall a 4 valve. I stand to be corrected though...anyone?

A classic is a car or bike over 25 years old
A vintage is over 40 (and you get cheap rego!!)

That's the law.

Owning a classic bike and especially running them a lot takes special mental fortitude or something mental, and a classic forum would be a good place perhaps for the old bike loonies to waffle on in threads about UNC threads

Mental Trousers has to convince ' the board' and advised me to 'get more support'.

I read here recently that some dealers won't service bikes over 10 years old!!!!
So seems if you want to run really ancient 1998 or earlier bikes you need to sharpen up on those tools.

Sorry, silly question. It seems from what people have said that the forum will be for classics according to the official definition, i.e. > 25 years old. That's fine by me, though I generally prefer to be pretty relaxed about rules like this.

Thats because if you mention OHC, electronic ignition, and reliability Guzzi owners won't know what you are talking about.....

Umm....but....my bike is over 25 years old and has DOHC, electronic ignition and reliability...though of course it's obviously not a Moto Guzzi... ;)

Definitely better not mention 24 valves, 2 cam chains, 4 cams, 6 carburettors and the rest.....

The Classic Sidecar forum has 6 threads and 62 posts - Did they get 8 pages of votes and 3 or 4 threads going before they got their separate forum? Do you have to know someone in high places and get them to spread their cheeks before a request is answered?

Thats a bit cynical....saying this one 4 day old thread about old bikes has had more posts than classic sidecar racing in 6 months.....shame on you.
I don't know what you are refering to by cheeks but......
I have a can of Castrol " GP 50" I was saving for that special occasion...

No, that's no good, it's too hard to mis-spell `shed'.

Real bikers have them in sheds.

Erm, Real Bikers have them in their lounge- unless they are rebuilding it, then most will be in the kitchen or soaking in the bath filled with petrol- the shed is for the hydroponics unit/meth lab, come on!

No, no, no, the shed is home to an old armchair, transistor radio and beer fridge because the lounge is full of motorbike.

Did you know that bikes over 30 years old are Vintage Car Club eligible?
I don't go along much but I have taken advantage of the Vero Insurance.
For example:
$ 120.07 per annum...of course there are provisions....
You under 25 youngn's can't get it as its only for us old codgers, it can't be your primary vehicle and there is a limitation of 5000 km pa.
I think the excess is $ 50.00 and the market value on that is just under $ 10K
Not a bad deal as some these 'old shiiters' are starting to creep up in value.
That was you can keep them in the garage and not get grief about oil stains on the carpet....
