Hi guys.
Well. Uh.
I have a new oil filter in my hands, and oil.
I know the oil comes out the 17mm hole at the bottom of my engine, and that the old oil filter is somewhere in there.
Is it behind the glass level?
Anything I should look out for opening that part up?!
Springs, rubber, boogiemen
It'll be my first oil change.
Did the sprockets, and the chain yesterday by myself though!

Edit:
I spent A fruitless half an hour trying to find my bike, let alone another 4cyl engine having the oil filter removed, for indicative purposes on Google!!

you dont want to be opening the glass thing up, the filter should be under the bike where the drain plug is (at least that was where the last one i did was)

Hmmm, three different answers!
The bike guy said behind cover #1, which turned out to the the spark timing thing. Guy at work said the glass cover (#2)
maybe I'll wait till the weekend

Edit: Cheers though, it's a process of elimination, boy oh boy!

Perhaps reference to the workshop manual for the machine might clarify matters?

On a Bandit 250, I would think it would be at the front (chin) of the engine below/between exaust pipes. Usually looks like a finned cylinder. Usually one bolt on the centre/end. It will be spring loaded and holding oil. Even AFTER you drain the oil out (through that bottom 17 mm hole).

Where in Aucks are you? Did my mate's oil change (Bandit) with him, can't remember exactly where it was, but if I took a 5sec look it should be obvious. I think it's beside the sump plug and has a spider webish looking patern surrounding the bolt.

If one had possesion of such a holy grail, one would. But, I'm ACTUALLY adding this to my to-do list now.

Please see the picture, beer-of-choice winner! (And confirm).
I had always wondered what this odd piece was.

Perhaps a beer winner as well?! Birkdale.

Yep that's the one. Haha I remember it being a bitch to get at due to lack of clearance between the headers! Where's Birkdale lol? I'm actually looking to do my oil change and all sometime over the next 2 weeks, could be up to a double-team haha.

Fuck. Lol.
It really looks as if impossible to remove. Hopefully it's just a plate, not a recessed cup, right?!?!

Birkdale/Glenfield/Right next to the Harbour bridge etc.
Sounds like it just could be!

Just a plate, with rubber oring sealing it against the casing... Dont be hamfisted in removing the nuts or you will regret it

Same goes for the drain bolt, dont go overboard when doing it up ;)

From memory, it's a spring-loaded plate, with an internal filter that can be removed at the right angle lol.

Oh true gotcha. Are you looking to do it ASAP or would next week be all good? Wanna get a few more hundred k's done before the oil change :Punk:

There is either a single bolt that holds it on...or 3 bolts around the edge of the plate. The plate has an o-ring seal and there is also a spring behind it. Be careful that you get (have) the right filter. There are several lengths available. They have a rubber cap on one end, with a hole, that just fits over the feeder pipe. Had the problem with having the wrong length filter when trying to do McDuck's Katana for him...filter goes in, but o-ringed plate doesn't seal.

DONT lose or damage that O ring, use correct socket (with long extension). It should be done with the engine warm... more oil comes out, but be careful of hot exaust...hence long extension on socket...

I had this experience once with brake calipers on a mountain bike :calm:
200 dollars and a new set of disc brakes later... Ha ha. But not really ha ha, you know?!

As I am unsure of the previous owners last service, it has gone >7,500k's since its last oil service :Pokey:. A couple hundred more wont hurt I guess!

Sure man, if you want to come have a laugh, all good!

Lol make that 50k south of the Harbour Bridge. If you and the Master can sort out a time to do it then all good, if nothing works out then gimme a yell!

Yeah, the guy at the bike shop said be fucking careful with it.
Perhaps a damp cloth covering the headers would do nicely. A buffer, if you will.

Perhaps using Auckland/North Shore in the future would be a tad easier for some people
If I can't, I'll give ya a yell, saddle up and attempt my way down :2guns:

200 dollars and a new set of disc brakes later... Ha ha. But not really ha ha, you know?!ah yeah, you better get someone to demonstrate it for you, and make sure you have the correct tools. After seeing it done you can easily do it yourself. No, a six inch crescent is not the proper tool to do it. ;)

There must be a "workshop evening" somewhere near you. If not, that would be a good thing for someone to host. I'm happy to show people stuff in the BoP.

Warm the engine not cook it. A few minutes idleing would usually suffice... some drop the headers down, to reduce the risk of getting burnt...

Well I at least put a packer in between the pistons before I moved them around, put the new pads in and then screwed them back into their brackets. I just didn't know I was forcing them back into their holes and rooting them!
Apparently there was a little nib I could release excess pressure from...
My rule of thumb is get someone to do it first, unless it's changing a headlight, then when it's needed again, I'll do it. A workshop evening sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Yeah, that's me. I was down in Wellington. He happened to call me while I was on the plane. Something about being stuck behind a chain?

Dunno. Damn foreigners. Drop me a PM, i'll let you know my cell number.

We (The Uni SMC) hold them regularly, have to drop by our little corner at the bottom of this site ;)
